Joe,

Could you please add this information to the surname studies you have listed? I have sent this information to Denny Brubaker for the Claiborne Co. Pioneer project but would also like to have it added to the surname studies as well.

Couple of questions: Where can I locate the Fulkerson materials I see so many references to?

Why is the name John tacked on the front of Ransom(e) Day in most of what I have seen so far? None of the descendants of the Ransom Day (see attached) used the name John.

Thanks,

Sharon Bryant

Hi Joe,

Still tracking those Days from Claiborne Co., TN who moved to IN and then west from there. And still looking for help.

I had been looking for a connection between my Charles Reuben Day, b Claiborne c 1862-1863 to one of the Claiborne families. I've finally found it via a note written on the back of a picture identified as Reuben Day "papa's half-brother."

Here's where I'm at right now:

Ransom Day and wife (Mary Brooks, name on daughter's death certificate) are  in Claiborne Co in 1830:

Day, Ransom Jr.    m: 15-20  (William); m: 40-50  (Ransom); fe: 0-5  (Nancy); fe: 10-15  (Coley m. Nathaniel Malicoat to Indiana); fe: 10-15  (Elizabeth m (1) Surber??? (2) James Malicoat, Nathaniel's brother, sons of Dedmon and Lavina Thacker Malicoat); fe: 40-50  Mary.

Claiborne Co in 1840:

Day, Ransom m: 10-15 (not sure who this is) m: 50-60 (Ransom); fe: 10-15 (Nancy m Levi Lewis, 1849 in Putnam Co., IN); fe: 50-60 (Mary).

Putnam Co. IN in 1850:

Day, Ransom, 69, VA; Day, Mary, 67, VA; Day, Jefferson, 16, TN. Jefferson is the oldest son of William Day and Jane "Jinsey" Wells who are in Claiborne Co, TN in 1850.

Putnam Co., MO in 1860:

Lewis, Levi, 34, KY; Lewis, Nancy, 34, TN: (several children), Day, Ransom, 80, VA; Day, Mary, 79, VA.

There was a split up in the William and Jane family in Claiborne Co. In 1850 family consisted of William, 35, TN, shoemaker; Jane, 35, NC; William, 16, TN; Wiley (James Wyley--he went by Wyley later in life), 14, TN; George, 12, TN; Louiza, 10, TN; Polly, 8, TN; Nancy, 5; Nelson, 3, TN, and Fanny, 1, TN. Another child was born c 1852, Amanda.

In 1854/55 Jane moved the majority of her children to Putnam Co., IN. She appears there with the following children in the 1860 census: Jane Day, 45, NC; Wiley Day, 24, TN; Nancy Day, 15, TN; Nelson Day, 14, TN; Amanda Day,  08, TN; Jefferson Day, 28, TN.

Jane, Jefferson, and Amanda are in Putnam Co., MO by 1870. Amanda married her cousin, William H. Lewis, s/o Levi and Nancy, there in Jan 1870 and Jane and Jefferson appear in the 1870 census in Richland Twp., Putnam Co., MO. Also there are James Wiley and his wife, Maggie (Margaret Gose), and daughter, Laura.

Jane died in Sept 1879, Putnam Co., MO and is buried in Lemons Cemetery there. Jefferson and Wyley went back to Indiana.

Nelson married Alice Cotton (descendant of Peter Cotton who if I remember correctly had married a Hurst in Claiborne Co) and remained in Putnam Co., IN for the rest of his life.

William, the father of Jane's kids, apparently remarried to an Emeline/Jane Simmons. I found a marriage record in 1861 in Grainger Co. In the 1870 census he appears with Emeline in the Grainger Co., census; by 1880 they're in Claiborne Co. In both censuses there was a son named James in the household. My Charles Reuben is also supposed to be their son but don't understand why he was believed to have been orphaned. He ended up by 1880 in Clay Co., IN.

What I need: Information on Ransom Day before 1830. Information on William (the father) after 1880. Marriage records (okay you can stop laughing now) for William, c 1832 to Jane Wells; Coley c 1833 to Nathaniel Malicoat; Elizabeth c 1835 to James Malicoat. What happened to James Day, b c 1866-67, son of William and Emeline?

Any help you may be able to give will be greatfully appreciated. Thanks,

Sharon (Day) Bryant
