There has been extensive research contributed to the Claiborne County Day lines by John F. Day III whose research will be
colored green below,
taking the DayFamilyDNA Chart results from three percipients of the Claiborne County Day lines.  He states in his research:
My Ransom Day is DNA Kit #17835. Unfortunately, the group have removed the links to various lines that match but there
are many matching my Ransom Day’s line.

The three lines are known to me as the Ambrose Day, Ransom Day and Reuben Day lines.  All almost certainly
proven by the Claiborne County records,  the St. James Parish (Goochland Co., Va) registry and the DNA
results from the Day Family DNA Chart.

There is evidence from the Court Minutes of TN-Claiborne that Ransom Day (b. 1760) was a brother to Ambrose

Day (b. 1761-1770) and Reuben Day (b.1761-1770).

Incidentally, the John. Day that married Ann Taylor (18 Mar 1784 in the same Douglas Register of Goochland) was a different John Day from the one that was married to Dorothy Henley, the parents of Ransom Day when he was born in 1762.  John and "Dolly" are still married in Albemarle in 1785.

Virginia Historical Genealogies by John Bennett Boddie lists this John Day as son of William Day and Ann Amelia Harris married to a woman with the surname Taylor.

PHILIP DAY born 1740 in Va. (NOTE - Philip's will was written about 1793 and he died about 1796)
John F.Day III, Los Altos, Ca says the following regarding his ancestor,
Philip Day’s connection to the Ransom Day family of East Tennessee:
I have been particularly attracted to Ransom Day, Virginia Revolutionary War veteran and pioneer who led his family from
Virginia to Claiborne about 1806.  “Ransom” is a recurring name in my Day family of South Carolina and Alabama.  My
4g-grandfather was Philip Day, recorded in Halifax County, Virginia in the 1782 census.  His son, my 3g-grandfather was
John Ransom Day, born in Virginia, and died in South Carolina.  Hence, my curiosity was perked by a man from Virginia by
the name Ransom Day.

Ensign John Day born 30 June 1742 Bucks Co. PA  It was my belief that Ensign John Day migrated
to Jefferson County, Tennessee and had a son David.  More on Ensign John below:
There is a John DAY line that descends from John Day of Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

(1)     ENSIGN John DAY was born 30 June 1742 Bucks Co. PA,(this would be Ensign John Day) that married : Mary Susan
(2)     "Polly" Evans  and Esther Drennin .  (FindaGrave for this line of John Day)
(3)     His mother was Susan Wyley, daughter of James Wyley, This Rootsweb database lists this
(4)     John Day as the son of Nathaniel Day.
Also, Ensign John Day had a son David Day who was a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church in Springdale

(Other than the fact that Ensign John had moved to Jefferson County, TN and had a son  David who was a member at the
same time Ransom of Claiborne was also a member of the same Church I have found no direct connection between these
two Day lines.) Here are others researching this line:

Sue Price Ikerd, Rt. 1, Box 574, Conway, MO 65632.
Sharon Bryant has added information to the Day line that brings up other points regarding the two John Day families and the name Ransom.

(1)John Day and Dorothy Henley of St. James Parish (Goochland).   (My Lineage)

(2) Patriot Ransom DAY (Certain Direct Line) was born Louisa County, State of Va. on the  15th day of January 1762 and married 16 Jun 1779 in
Powhatan, Powhatan, Virginia, Elizabeth (Betsy) SMITH, who was born about 1762 in Virgina, daughter of James SMITH and Caroline MATILDA,
Co., Va.

Although the birth date does not fit the date of birth that Ransom Day gave in his own application. John F.Day III, Los

Altos, California explains:
1762 Jan 15 – VA-Louisa – Birth of Ransom Day

It is my belief that Patriot Ransom Day, Rev War Vet VA Line Serial No. R2790, whose Pension application says he was born on 15

Jan 1760 is one and the same Ransom Day, whose birth was recorded in the William Douglas Registry for St. James

Parish (Goochland) as born 15 Jan 1762 to the parents John Day and Dorothy Henley, and who was Baptized on 12 April 1762

(p.62 of the Registry).  I think Ransom, the old man who filed the 1844 pension application, was not sure when he was

born and made a good guess on the pension application.  (HTML)  (PDF)  I have found some mention a Catherine B. on the pension

application for Patriot John DAY.  The pension application for

Birth date reported in Revolutionary War Pension Application.  There is evidence from the Court Minutes of TN-Claiborne

that Ransom Day (b. 1760) was a brother to Ambrose Day (b. 1761-1770) and Reuben Day (b.1761-1770).

(3) John Ransom DAY Jr, (Patriot Ransom DAY, John) was born about 1794 in Halifax Co., Virginia, USA, and on May 22, 1817 in
Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA,  married Nancy Elizabeth  HURST, daughter of Thomas H. HURST and Sylvia (Siley) BREEDING,
on May 22, 1817.  s born in 1797 in Of, Wythe, Virginia.  John Ransom died on Nov 28, 1842 in Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA.
John Ransom DAY, son of Patriot Ransom Day did serve in the military from Jan 1814 to July 1814 in the Tennessee Militia, widow
pension #4723.  John DAY died violently as indicated by two articles from the Claiborne County Progress.
The first was from articles “Our Early History”, talking about caves in Claiborne County.
It says that the Day Cave located on the road between Lone Mountain  and Springdale, that hasn’t changed to this day.
The cave was located near to Louis Breeding’s residence.
“John Day was killed years ago and dragged to the cave, was the grandfather of the Payne Brothers, Lone Mountain”.

The second article was dated July 1932 from Ethan Allen Hurst, a relative of our Hurst ancestors. In the article he remembers
that John Day was killed before the Civil War at the cave in front of his house by “the Dunn boys and Sammy Day’s brother Lewis”
These Day’s were descendants of Ambrose Day who I have been studying as a brother of patriot Ransom Day but not
sure. Links to both articles clipped can be found by accessing this link.

P. G. Fulkerson gives Thomas Hurst son of Thomas, came to Big Sycamore Creek about 1800.  He married
Sylvania Breeding and lists his children.
This is in the February 20, 1980 column in the TAZEWELL OBSERVER. I found Nancy Day as the daughter of
John Ransom Day and Nancy Hurst in the Mormon Church records.  No other children were listed. Ransom is under the
church ID number Q025-DP. Patsy Sue Ikerd, Great Great Granddaughter of Ransom Day has furnished me much information.
She is from Conway, MO.  Met her on Roots on the Internet.

Just recently my cousin Amy Payne Potts from Aiken, SC wrote a very descriptive and well documented account of what Nancy Elizabeth
Hurst Day did after her husband John Day was killed November 28, 1842. I will share her file as a PDF for anyone that has interest.

You will find the lineage of John D. Day further down on this page.

           1848.
There is another assumption from 1830 Claiborne Census and that is that Sarah
is the sister of John Sr. and that Russell Breeding is the son of Jerimiah Breeding.

Located where the Big Sycamore Creek meets the Clinch River this Mill Complex was inundated by the impoundment of Norris Lake. It was owned by Ransom Day.

The Day’s Bluff community had a church, school and siding, a small Depot and a water tower for Southern Railway trains known as Clinch River. The cemetery remains but access is limited to it.

 July 29, 1847.
John Ransom died on Aug 18,1848 in most likely New Orleans, LA from DHYREA.  (See pension papers).

This was from one account of where John Ransom Day lived after the Mexican War
(He fought in the Mexican War and received Bounty Land in Louisiana and never lived in Claiborne Co again.)

The Pension Papers of Ransom Day, Jr.

Ransom Day, Jr died of DHYREA from medical examiner's account and evidently in New Orleans.
Ransom Day, Jr. is buried in Big Springs Primitive Babtist Church Cemetery. The minor child of Ransom
Day, James Knox Polk Day, the only minor child of Ransom Day, relinquished his claim to
pension to William S. Hurst on April 18, 1860.  He was 16 at that time.
He was listed as Ransom Day, J.P. on the settlement of his father’s, John Day’s estate in Feb. 1843.

Lucinda Day is widowed in the 1880 Claiborne Co. census and has A. C. age 21 Hurst

Martha BARTLETT who was born about 1835.  John D. died on Aug 25, 1859 in Webster Co., Missouri, USA.
Patsy Sue Ikerd, Conway, MO found the following. John D. died in Webster Co. MO. Found papers in the Courthouse.

One states John Day departed his life on or about the 25 Aug 1859 his next of kin being Ransom Day.  Note included in estate
papers of John Day: On or before the 25 Dec 1857 I promise to pay Geo R. Ward $45.00 for value rec’d witness my hand & seal this 10 Sep 1856.

Test. Elizabeth A. Day

  Children:
33  1 Ransom L. DAY was born in 1856 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA.
From the 1880 Census I took that Lucinda was keeping a nephew, since her
husband Levi Hurst had died.  I am guessing the R. L. Day is the son of her
brother John D.  rather than Ransom.

(11) Elizabeth DAY, (John DAY, Ransom, John) was born in 1836 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA, and married Samuel J.
BURDINE, son of Samuel BURDINE and Elizabeth D. Betsy SEWELL, who was born in 1827 in Smith Co., Tn.  Samuel J. died
of wounds he received in Dec 1864 in Veterans Hosp., Nashville, Tn. (Document Recorded as Elizabeth filed for Pension)
The interesting Payne background cannot be fully appreciated without mentioning the Payne's grandmother or great
grandmother in my case, Elizabeth Payne. Elizabeth was born in the mid 1800's to Ransom and Sarah Day who lived in the
Springdale community in Claiborne County.  Elizabeth's mother was the daughter of Thomas Hurst who was the moderator
of the Primitive Baptist church in 1830 in Springdale.

Just before the beginning of the Civil War, Elizabeth met a peddler from Virginia, John Burdine, and soon thereafter
married him.  They settled in Springdale.  When the war started, John enlisted with the Union Army and was stationed in
Virginia.

The following is an account of John Tom Payne in the Claiborne County Progress on Thursday, May 27, 1971.
Some of this information has been proven to be incorrect by Amy Potts Payne and most becomes just one of those
famous “Tall Tales”, so often told, with some truth and mostly fiction.

John had not been away from Elizabeth for any length of time since the marriage and soon after he arrived in Virginia
with the army, he began to miss his wife and longed to be with her.   John changed to his civilian clothes and road on
horseback to Springdale to visit Elizabeth, and their two young daughter, Martha Jane (who later married Bill Yoakum,
grandfather of Lon Yoakum in Middlesboro) and Mollie (who was married to Hugh Hodge from Tazewell). [This differs
from the census records of 1880 that lists Mollie as a daughter of Anderson G. Payne and Elizabeth Day.  Mollie was born
in 1867 a year after the marriage of A.G. and Elizabeth].

Soon after John arrived in Springdale, neighbors, who were sympathetic with the Confederates stationed there informed
them that a Union soldier was in Springdale.  The confederates’, thinking John was a spy, caught and promptly hung him.
Elizabeth Burdine was very much upset about this and was hurt deeply that her neighbors had informed on her husbands
presence.  She left the Springdale community and moved to Orange Co., Va., where her parents had originally come from.
There she resided with relatives.

It was in Virginia that the widow, Elizabeth, met Anderson Payne, who had been wounded in both legs.  Sometime in 1866,
Elizabeth married Anderson Payne and shortly thereafter they moved to Claiborne County and settled in Springdale.
Anderson Payne opened a livery stable there and rented horses and buggies or "hacks" as they were called then.  He was
also selling merchandise from a lean to attached to the house. Shortly before the turn of the century, the Payne’s
moved to Lone Mountain where the railroad had just been completed. Anderson went to work for the railroad as a depot
agent and telegraph operator.  His hack business and the selling of merchandise continued to prosper in Lone Mountain.

Samuel J. Burdine died in a hospital in Nashville. Transcription follows:
Burdine, L. P. Cl-53-1; Elisabeth Payne formerly widow of: Pvt M Co. 8th TN Cav; 63 to 12-64; Springdale PO; died
hospital at Nashville, TN.

L.P. is from the information furnished by list of soldiers died and pensions. The name most likely was that of  John Patton
BURDINE.

Samuel is from 1860 Claiborne Co. Census, family 760 and from additional research to this point. Still a mystery to the
Payne Family

Children:
+    34  Also in the Russell Co. Va. birth records "Some Russell County Records, Births1 Martha Jane BURDINE was
born in 1861. 1853-1866-Southern Historical Press 1996") I find record of another child of Patton Burdine and
Elizabeth in Claiborne County, TN Elen BURDINE b.  07 Jul 1862
She also married in 1866 in Springdale, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, Anderson G. PAYNE, son of Hiram E. PAYNE and
Mary Polly ANDERSON, who was born in 1848 in Scott Co., Virginia, USA.  Anderson G. died on Oct 30, 1907 in
Lone Mountain, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA and was buried in 1907 in Lone Mountain, Claiborne Co.,
Tennessee, USA.

This is my Great Grandfather and began the Payne Family businesses in Claiborne County.  He is listed as a Merchant on the 1880 Tennessee, Claiborne Co.

Census and has all of his children living at home with a step daughter,
M.J. Burdine. His sister Sarah E. Payne is also living with him as well as his mother in Law Nancy Day and a Boarder John Phillips.
In the book The French Broad - Holston Country Social Institutions of Knox County I found the following.
Just when the Knoxville Benevolent Association ceased to function has not been ascertained, but a new organization with
similar purposes, the Associated Charities of Knoxville, was founded February 25, 1888.  A public meeting, called
at the request of ministers representing various denominations, was presided over by the Reverend Samuel Ringgold.
The following were elected to the Board of Directors:  J. A. Rayl, S. T. Powers, A. B. Strong, T. W. Keller, M. McClung,
A. G. Payne, James R. Ogden, Mike O'Conner, John L. Rhea, H. H. Ingersol, A. J. Albers and A. Lobenstein.
The organization requested the Board of Aldermen to pass an ordinance prohibiting street and door-to-door begging.
For the next three years the group distributed food, clothing and coal to the needy, and in some cases paid rent.
The last entry in the official records is dated December 8, 1890, so the first Associated Charities may have disbanded
about that time. I added the I.D. Number from the Church Record.
