FIRST GENERATION
(1) ULRICH1 BUEHLER was born about 1705 at Switzerland, and married (2) Maria Elizabeth UNKNOWN. ULRICH died after 1778.

Notes for ULRICH BUEHLER:
There are two seperate versions of when and on which ship the Beeler family first came to America.

John, Peter and Joseph Beeler heard of the fabulous land of America. They decided to visit the land far acress the sea. They went to Amsterdam and boarded the Charming Polly via London to Amerca. Their port was on the coast of Virginia. from there they came to the Shenandoah Valley by way of Big Lick, Virginia. They halted for a few years in what is now Sullivan County. Joseph, who was the son of John Beeler, fought in the Battle of Kings Mt. After the war was over, they set out through the wilderness, until they came in sight of the place which is now Washburn, TN. They procured land and built their home on the south bank of Williams Creek. Joseph was the founder of Beeler's Chapel Church which was built of logs on top of Hines Ridge. He is buried in the cemetery on the hill in front of the old home place. A handsome DAR marker stands at his head, with the Words Joseph Beeler.

Extracted from the List of foreigners imported in the ship Hope, Daniel Reid, Master, from Rotterdam. Qualified Sept. 23, 1734. BUHLER, Ulrich (The original list is herewith given) Men's Names Name Age BULER, Ulrich.....................................29 If this is the same Ulrich Buhler, his DOB was most likely 1705.

Ulrich resided in Lancaster and York Co., PA, and Shenandoah Co., VA. Arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship "Hope".

Hello,

My ancestor is Elizabeth Beeler, b. 1730 and later married John Peters, Sr. They are both buried nearby at the old Beeler Cemetery, near Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN

Was Elizabeth Beeler Peters the aunt of Jacob Beeler????? Trying to find her parents.

I'd be grateful for any help.

Hi,
Diane Kropp wrote to me some time ago (we've just moved and I'm not really organized yet) and I downloaded your Beeler data. She said if I had any questions or additions to write to you so here goes.
I know the data on Daniel Beeler, son of John Valentine is correct. That's my husbnads family and I have documantation , family records, and the usual civil records, etc. So I'd like to add that to what you have. But first: those with the * are the ones where we differ.
Who knows who's right.

Question: Is that David Cosper's paper on the Joseph at Lookout Mountain? I've been trying to find a copy of it. He and I have discussed this several time over the years. I think he said that the Joseph and Jacob who were sons of Ulrich were the men at King's Mountain. Is that right?

Notes for Joseph BEELER:
See Tennessee Ancestors, Vol 10 (3) December 1994, article titled JOSEPH BEELER AT KING'S MOUNTAIN.
This account of Joseph Beeler is what I had originally included in my notes from applications to the First Families of Tennessee by members of the Beeler family. Another more document account is included further in the notes for Joseph Beeler son of John Beeler from Mark Asbell
Joseph Beeler and his younger brother, Peter Beeler came to the country which is now East Tennessee about 1790 --- I mean, to that which is now Wasburn and Liberty Hill communities. They were, "Tillers of the sol," they were also endowed with great creative ability. They made the hoes, shovels, horseshoes, nails, in fact, they made all the necessary farming material of that day. They were ten tallented people. They could do or make anythign. Moreover they were men of unimpeachable charter. They were devout men. They were ten tallented people. During their stop over of a few years in what is now Sullivan County, Joseph who was older than his brother, Peter Beeler, married his neighbor Katy Petree. Peter Beeler then married Katy's sister, Barbara Petree. It seemsd as though Williams Creek surroundings were fascinating to them. Joseph built a huge log house in the south west end of what is now known as Dutch Valley. It was near the bank of Williams Creek and near to where Beeler's Chaple Methodist Church is now located.

Joseph was sorely grieved to lose Katy by death, but we find that on Ocotber 21, 1834 he married Ann Parker. Their only son was Daniel Beeler who was the father of the Dutch Valley and Hines Ridge Beelers.

In Shelby's Pamphlet regarding the surrender at Kings Mt. Jacob Bealer states that he was in Capt. Pembertons company in the Battle of Kings Mountain and amongst the very first at the place of surrender. The commander asked for our General, and gave his sword first to Maj. Evan Shelby, who kept it until Col. Campbell came up, which was twenty minutes, and I think longer, afterwards. From the discourse which I heard between Col. Shelby and the British officers I know that Campbell was not there, and that it was that length of time before he came up. Joseph Bealer certifies, that I was at the surrender with my brother Jacob Bealer at his side, and saw and heard what he has stated in the above certificate, and know them to be true.

I deeply and sincerely regret the necessity that has been cast upon me of discussing, in defence of my own character, a subject so delicate and so invidious. It is a controversy that I have not sought; it is one that I would have avoided, if any alternative had been left me. My letters to Col. Sevier were written in all the confidence of a private correspondence with an old friend. I question not the motives that influenced his son to publish them after the death of his father. But certainly it was an event altogether unexpected by me. (Shelby)

From Tennessee Cousins: Joseph Beeler, Sr. came from Virginia and settled in Grainger County, and was the father of Jacob Beeler, who was born in 1804 and who married a niece of Gen. Benjamin Cleveland, Nancy the daughter of Martin Cleveland, who lived in Grainger County, a brother of Robert and Benjamin Cleveland. Joseph C. Beeler, son of Jacob and Nancy, was born November 29, 1832, Nancy died in 1884. Joseph went to Carson-Newman, and was Superintendent of the Schools of Jefferson County. He was a merchant in Grainger County for some time. His wife was Addie Hickle, the daughter of Calvin Hickle, and she was born in Knox County.

The following reference and others that point to this Joseph Beeler, though published, is not accurate. The Joseph and Jacob Beeler at King's mountain were the sons of Ulrich and Maria Elizabeth Buhler. See Tennessee Ancestors, Vol 10 (3) December 1994, article titled JOSEPH BEELER AT KING'S MOUNTAIN. From The King's Mountain Men: Jacob and Joseph were under Colonel Shelby. Jacob received a pension in Sullivan county, 1832. Joseph moved to Grainger county. His son Jacob married Nancy, a daughter of Martin Cleveland, brother to Robert and Colonel Benjamin of Revolutionary fame. Joseph, son of Jacob went to Jefferson county and married Addie Hickle. Descendants are in Grainger and Jefferson.

Notes for Jesse Franklin BEELER: From Mark Asbell
Jesse Franklin Beeler, was the only child of Joseph Beeler and wife Caroline Jennings Beeler. They lived for a period at Cedar Grove in Union County. They became anxious to see the kin folk in Grainger Co. They walked back to Grainger County. They stopped for a few minutes rest at Uncle Jacob Beeler's home which was about one and half miles east of Powder Springs. Uncle Jacob's wife, Aunt Nancy was very hospitable as she brought out a piece of pie for Jessee, the little boy. He thanked her for the pie and ate all of it except the trim of crust around the edge..

(41) Elizabeth3 BEELER, (Jacob2 BEELER, ULRICH1 BUEHLER) was born May 10, 1785 at Virginia, and about 1805 at Sullivan County, Tn, married (126) John Phillip SHARETS, son of Conrad M. SCHERERTZ and Mary Margaret LAIRD, who was born about Aug 1, 1783 at York County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth died on Feb 14, 1855 at Bristol, Virginia. John Phillip died about Jun 1821 at Knox County, Tennessee and was buried on Aug 31, 1783 at York County, Pa, in Saint David's, Reform Church. Notes from Mark Asbell

Notes for Elizabeth BEELER: Death was reported by son Jacob. Her name was spelled Lizabeth in the Jacob Beeler Bible. The Washington Co. Va. death record, reported by her son Jacob, lists her place of birth as "Washington". This could have been Washington County Va, as her family was in the area at that time.

Notes for John Phillip SHARETS: Name was spelled Sharets, Sharrets, Sharetz, Scheretz, Cherrot and many other ways. JOHN PHILLIP SHERERTZ John Philip Sherertz, the fourth child of Conrad Sherertz, Senior, and Mary Margaret Laird, was born 1 August 1783 at or near York County, Pennsylvania, being christened on 31 August 1783 at Saint Davids Lutheran and Reformed Church. Spending his early childhood in the Manheim Township of York County, he moved with his father and family to Sullivan County, Tennessee, in the fall of 1798. On 18 August 1810, Conrad Sharets, Senior, wrote an annuity to John in consideration of $2,025 in money and 225 acres of land located in Sullivan County on which John was then residing. The land transaction was recorded at the Sullivan County Court House on 7 August 1810, prior to the writing of the annuity.
In consideration of the land and money, the annuity states that John was to provide his father and his father's wife, Anna, yearly with the following items:
15 Bushels Wheat
15 Bushels Rye
26 Bushels Corn
26 Bushels Oats
75 Weight of Pork
75 Weight of Beef
13 Weight of Flax
13 Weight of Tobacco
1 Ton of Hay
7 1/2 Pounds of Potatoes
10 Bushels Turnips
$7.50 in money
10 Gallons Good Merchantible Whiskey
Sufficient Quantity of Firewood All to be delivered to Conrad, Senior's, dwellinghouse yearly, during his natural life. To Anna, John was to pay $5 yearly for five years. He was also to care for two sisters, Margaretta and Barbary. To each Sister he was to pay 100 pounds in Virginia currency as part of their dowries after their father's death, of which one third was to be paid in cash and the other part to be paid in trade at cash prices. John was to begin his payments as this annuity herein outline5 on 1 De 1811- John registered this annuity at the Sullivan County Court House on 27 July 1812 after the death of Conrad Sherertz, Senior. In 1812 John Sherits is listed in the Early East Tennessee Tax Lists of Sullivan County, Tennessee. He began selling his land in Sullivan County in 1818. On 17 March 1819 John purchased from Christian Foust 200 acres of land located on the West Fork of Flat Creek in Knox County, Tennessee, for the sum of $1,300. His name on this deed was spelled Sharerts. Before 10 October 1822, John deceased in Knox County at approximately 39 years of age. On 10 October 1822, Conrad Sherertz, Junior, John's brother acting as administrator of John's estate, filed a petition in the Knox County Court. The petition requested that a sale of the real estate of John Sherertz, deceased, be made to satisfy the debts against the estate. The Petition names Johnls widow, Elizabeth, and his nine children; i.e., Jacob, John, Polly, Sally, Conrad, Daniel, Anna, Isaac, and Benjamin. The petition also names Henry Sherertz, John's brother, as guardian over the children. John's land was eventually sold at public auction in April of 1823, being purchased by Conrad Sherertz, Junior, for the sum of $600, which was the amount needed to satisfy John's debts. John Sherertz and his wife, Elizabeth, were married most likely in Sullivan County, Tennessee. However, due to the f act that the marriage records for Sullivan County were destroyed during the Civil War, her maiden name remains unknown.
We assume that all nine children were of this union and most likely all were born in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Elizabeth seems to have left the Knox County area shortly after the death of her husband. In the 1830 East Tennessee Census we note an Elizabeth Sherid in Sullivan County as the head of a household with six sons and three daughters. two sons were 5-10 years of age, two sons were 10-15 years of age, two sons were 15-20 years of age, one daughter was 10-15 years of age, two daughters were 15-20 years of age, and Elizabeth was 40-50 years of age. As Elizabeth appears in approximately the same location as where she and John were residing prior to their movte to Knox County, and being near neighbors who were previously associated with the family, we feel certain that these are John's widow and chi1dren. There seem to be numerous descendants still in the Sullivan County, Tennessee, area who have chosen to use the spelling Sharrets. No doubt many of them are John's descendants. To the union of John Philip Sherertz and his wife, Elizabeth, nine children were born as follows: I. Jacob Sherertz II. John Sherertz III. Polly Sherertz I@. Sally Sherertz V. Conrad Sherertz VI. Daniel Sherertz VII. Anna Sherertz VIII. Issac Sherertz IX. Benjamin Sherertz The above information was taken from James Sherrod's book "The Sherertz/Sherrod Family 1714-1984".

Notes for Daniel Henry BEELER: From Goodspeed's History 1899.
It is a very good possiblity that Daniel was the son of Joseph Beeler born July 5, 1762 in Virginia who married 1782 in N.C. in the Sullivan Co. TN area Katie Petree. Joseph Beeler died Aug. 22, 1845 in Grainger Co., TN, and is buried Liberty Hill, TN. Daniel would have been a brother to John Beeler born 1809 in Grainger County who married Sept 6, 1857 Annie Shelton.

Question: Is that David Cosper's paper on the Joseph at Lookout Mountain? I've been trying to find a copy of it. He and I have discussed this several time over the years. I think he said that the Joseph and Jacob who were sons of Ulrich were the men at King's Mountain. Is that right?

Notes for Benjaman SHARRETT:
Benjamin bought 150 acres of land from Martin Fleenor on September 22, 1876. There was a trade of a house and lot in the Town of Goodson for this property. This was probably where Benjamin lived before he moved to the farm at Lime Hill. Origin of this land is 1) Land grant to Willian Carmack (1779) signed by Patrick Henry, then, 2) Henry Fleenor (Sept 22, 1826), 3) Martin Fleenor, 4) Benjamin Sharrett (Sept 22, 1876). Benjamin was born prior to 1822 and if he was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee, he would have been born prior to 1819 because they moved to Knox County Te.nnessee about 1819.
