The history of the Crockett family and the Crockett Tavern Museum are important landmarks when visiting Tennessee. Many families traveling or on road trips stop to learn about history of Davy Crockett and his family. Historical sites like this are always perfect for road trips. Road trips will require a dependable vehicle to get them to and from their destination.

Buying a new and dependable car for road trips to Tennessee or other areas usually comes with making payments. Luckily for drivers there are several options to refinance auto loan payments. There is a lot to learn when it comes to vehicles and purchasing them. Roadloans is a helpful service that can assist with getting a new car on the road or provide more information on how to refinance auto loan payments.

(1) Gabriel Gustave DE CROCKETAGNE was born about 1600 in Montauban, France,
and married spouse unknown.
  Children:
    2+ Antoine De Sauss CROCKETAGNE b. Jul 10 1643

(2) Antoine De Sauss CROCKETAGNE, (Gabriel DE CROCKETAGNE) was born Jul

(Crocketagni) DESSAIX who was born about 1648.
Antoine De Sauss Perronette De /CROCKETAGNE/ Crockett Family of Tennessee by
French and Armstrong.
By tradition he was one of the handsomest men in southern France. He drew the personal
attention of the King, Louis, by his fine personal appearance and love of duty. The King was
eager to retain him in his service and to place him second in command of the household
guards. He was given this commission in 1664 when he was 21. It was there that he met,
among many of the nobility, the beautiful Louise de Sais in 1669. He then resigned his
commission as second in command of the King's household guards, in order to establish a
home of his own. It was through the influence of the Maury family who he was working as a
commercial agent in the wine and salt trade of Southern France that he was converted to the
Protestant faith. It was ordered in 1672 that all heretices, Huguenots, leave the south of
France within twenty days. Antoine, with his wife and infant son, Gabrriel, fled across the
English Channel and remained in England for a short time but shortly fled to Ireland. To
escape there French identity they changed their name to Crockett.

born Nov 20, 1674 in Kenmore Parish, Bantry Cork, Ireland, Ireland, and about 1695 in
Ireland, married (11) Martha MONTGOMERY, daughter of Thomas MONTGOMERY,
who was born about 1674 in Ireland.
(I also have in my possession an old long hand written manuscript that lists
John Crockett, son of James, who married Ester Thompson and had only one child Nancy Agnes
who married Col John Montgomery. John, son of James then remarried Elizabeth Montgomery and had three sons,
Andrew who married Sarah Elliot and had only one child Margaret who married John Ingles, Samuel who married Jane Steele
and James who married Mary Drake. James, who married Mary Drake, is listed in most genealogies as a child of Samuel and
Ester Thompson but in this he is a child of John Crockett and second wife Elizabeth Montgomery.
I have more on this assumption if anyone is interested). Regarding the Montgomery's A genealogical history of the Montgomerys and their descendants from Google Books online is great.

Esther died on Nov 19, 1770 in Montgomery Co(?), Va and was buried in Oglesby Graveyard, Near Sayers, Homestead, Va. Esther was married to William SAYRES. Andrew died on May 29, 1821 in Williamson Co., Tn. Sarah died on Jun 28, 1821 in Williamson Co., Tn. Tennessee Cousins by Ray Among the revolutionary soldiers who sleep beneath the solid of Willaimson Co, is Andrew Crockett, who is buried in what is know as the Crockett Cemetery. According to Mrs. Acklen's Tombsonte Records the following inscription is at his and his wife's graves: In memory of Andrew Crockett, died May 29, 1821, in the 76th year of his age. In memmory of Mrs. Sally consort of Andrew Crockett, died June 28, 1821, in the 71st year of her age. The will of Andrew Crockett was admitted to probate in Williamson Co., Tennessee, at the July term in 1821 shortly after his death and the demise of his wife, who was Sarah Elliott. W.B. 1819-1830 p. 241. Other inscriptions in the Crockett cemtery will be of interest. Samuel Crockett, born Nov. 1, 1772; died January 31, 1827 Joanna Crockett, wife of Samuel Crockett, born Nov. 15, 1792; died Sept. 17, 1812. Andrew Crockett, born Nov.15, 1795; died Sept 12, 1858; born in Wythe Co., Va Catherine Bell Crockett, born Feb.21, 1798 in Davidson Co., Tennessee; died Feb.14, 1890. In memory of Andrew Crockett, son of Samuel and Joanna Crockett, born in Wythe Co., Va. Nov 15, 1795; moved to Williamson Co., Tennessee, in 1799; died 1852. The above Andrew Crockett was married to Catherine Bell on April 2, 1818. The Andrew Crockett, Sr. of the above inscriptions, who married Sarah Elliott, was the son of a Samuel Crockett and his wife Esther Thompson, and it adds much interest to this sketch of Andrew Crockett, when it is shown that his mother - Ester Thompson - was the siter of that certain Robert Thompson who on a fateful day in May 1771 in company with Rev. David Caldwell went to the headquarters of Govenor Tryon, before the battle of the Alamance had started in a fruitless effort to prevent further hostilities between the gathered forces on both sides of the bloody struggle, then about to begin, with the sad results that, as he started to leave with his reverend companion, was shot down in cold blood by the Royal leader. This Robert Thompson, a brother of Esther Thompson and the uncle of Andrew Crockett, thus became the first man whose blood was spilled in defense of the American colonies. CHILDREN:

I am a descendant of your #68 Martha Crockett & #69 Thomas Montgomery. Thomas didn't die in Va. The family went to KY, where apparently Martha died. (I'm still looking after about 30 years.) Thomas and the next generations went to Gibson County, IN, where they were very prominant. My ancestors from the next two generations, Isaac and McGrady, came to Texas. (McGrady was in the battle at San Jacinto.) McGrady's daughter Martha was my grandmother. Can fax you my line, if you are interested. I haven't learned to "do" attachments. Also, the full name of your #2 was Antoine Dessassure de Crocketagne. I believe I've typed that correctly. My current interest is in trying to varify or dispell the report in the French and Armstrong book that Antoine's wife, Louise de Saix, was a cousin of Gen. Lafayette's mother. I finally found Lafayette's mother's name but have progressed much further. Congratulations on good luck on your Home Page. Subj: Joe, I am a crockett, and I see alot of names that are familiar Date: 10/26/98 12:23:14 PM Eastern Standard Time From: Loose100lb To: JPayne5744 Hello Joe, I have been researching my line for about two years, and you have alot of surnames that blend into my line. First, I think it would be helpful to tell you that my descendant is William Crocket b: abt 1730 died in Greenwood Township, PA. in 1792. Although there was another Crocket family in Allen Township ( which is your line) that I cannot connect to but there were only 2 Crocket lines in Cumberland in 1750 and you seem to have been able to link them just not in that generation. On what line did you get the name Columbus from? I have an ancestor woth the middle name of Columbus in the late 1800's, and I wonder if it is from the same family. How about the surname Henderson? I have a descendant with the middle name of Henderson Barnett, 2 both are in our Crockett line. Could this be a possible clue to previous ancestors? I would love to hear from you maybe you can help me. I have alot of documents that you would like as well. My William Crocket (1730) I believe to be a g-son to Joseph Louis Crocket, although I have been told that William couldn't have lived in PA, and his family was in VA., because where my William lived is on a mountain and there is no passage to VA., but I disagree because he had to get there because he and sons fought in the Revoulutioary War and the North and South fought together. There are alot of things I would love to share with you, as well as finding the parents to William of Greenwood. Thank You So Much, Sincerely, Paula Children: 79+ David CROCKETT b. 1727 d. 1777 (Davy's line) (79) David CROCKETT, (William CROCKETT, Joseph, Antoine CROCKETAGNE, Gabriel DE CROCKETAGNE) was born in 1727 in Maryland, and married (80) Elizabeth HEDGE. David Crocketts grandfather was also named David (This David) and evidently migrated from Maryland, south through the Carolinas, and settled in Lincoln County, NC. The Crockett Genealogy contains a copy of the land deed to David Crockett, of Tyrone County, NC, later divided into Lincoln and Rutherford Counties; then became part of Tennessee and now located in Hawkins County, where Rogersville, Tennessee now stands. Old Tyron County,NC Records His oldest sons were in the battle of Kings Mountain, among them was John

The remainder of the family of the elder David Crockett was massacred by Indians, while the older sons were away in the battle of Kings Mountain, with the exception of two small boys, Joseph who lost his arm in the massacre and James, both of whom were taken into captivity. William and Robert Crockett administered the estate of David Crockett (presumed to be grandfather of Davy) in Washington Co Va 1778. 2 David Crocketts signed a Washington Co Petition. There are some William Crockett land records in NC and a few records in Jefferson Co Tn. Kathryn Jones thinks John Crockett of McMinn Co maybe the son William and I suspect sons of David went to Clay Co Mo but I nothing at all that proves any family, forward or back, for either man and no proof that the various records are all the same David and William. What it really amounts to are a few records we can't connect to anything but can only guess about. John died in 1794. Rebecca was buried in Rutherford, Gibson County, Tennessee. John Crockett served under Col. Isaac Shelby in the Battle of King's Mountain, and was a magistrate presiding when Andrew Jackson received his license to practice law. Was also a commissioner of building roads. In 1783 he was a Frontier Ranger. His name appears on the Tax List of Greene Co. NC, now TN, for 1783. In 1786 he lived at Limestone Creek, TN. A few years later the family moved to a place in the same country ten miles north of Greenville. John Crockett, who in 1792, lived two miles East of where Morristown, Tennessee, is now located, near Phelps Smith, Richard Thompson and Isaac Martin. John Crockett did not tarry long at the mouth of the Limestone River, after David was born. In fact, David Crockett in 1792, when his father lived two miles out on the Abington road East of Morristown, was a barefooted six year old boy running around the house, probably one of the regular Log cabin type of that day and time. The next move was to Cove Creek, where John and Mr. Thomas Galbraith built a mill in partnership. The mill and his house were destroyed by a flood, so he moved to Jefferson Co. Tn and opened a tavern on the road from Abingdon to Knoxville, Davy was then eight years old and remained there until 12. Davy had left home to travel to Front Royal, Va on a cattle drive. From there he went on to Baltimore after being made an offer to drive cattle. He didn't return home until he was fifteen, about 1801 and found John Crockett in debt in the amount of $86.00. Davy worked the debt off and returned to school working for a Quaker, John Kennedy. After Davy married Polly Finley he lived with John for several years and then decided to move into a new territory. From: UMBLU@aol.com Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1996 10:48:47 -0500 To: JPayne5744@aol.com Subject: Crocketts & Hawkins Joe, FIrst of all, my apologies for the delay in responding. I've been without a computer for a few days. I have not done any research myself on the Hawkins family. The information I have is from a distant Crockett cousin, who obtained the genealogy from a Hawkins researcher. There are two opinions about the family of Rebecca Hawkins. The one gaining popularity is that she was the daughter of Nathan Hawkins & Ruth Cole of Baltimore. I show Rebecca with 6 brothers and two sisters named Rachel Ruth & Mary Elizabeth. No Sarah. A good deal of the information in Zella Armstrong's book has been found to be inaccurate by more modern Crockett researchers. Zella shows a William Crockett as a son of John & Rebecca Hawkins Crockett. My ancestor is that William, but bears no resemblance to the information in Zella's book. I have no idea who her William is nor does anyone else seem to have a clue. Sorry I don't have any definitive answers for you to help with your article. The Hawkins family seems to be another of those mysterious areas of the Crockett family. Marie Cilluff Mr. Worth S. Ray, author of The Lost Tribes of North Carolina, in Tennesse Cousins makes the following statement. "John Crockett, father of David "Davy" Crockett, was the son of Archibald Crockett, who married a daughter of William King, of Macklenburg Co., NC. Col. Thomas King of Hawkins Co. Tennessee was an uncle of John Crockett, and brother in law of Archibald Crockett, the gradfather of David Crockett. The mother of John Crockett's wife married as her second husband, a man named King, by whom she had at least one son, William King". He also says "David Crockett's mother was a Hawkins before her marriage to John Crockett, but she was not, a sister of Sarah Hawkins who married Govenor John Sevier, as David Crockett certainly would not have had first cousins old enough to have fought in the battle of King's Mountain." There are different accounts as to the connection of Rebecca Hawkins and Sarah and Jane Hawkins. The Geneology of the LDS registry does not list her as sisters of the women who married Gen. John Sevier and Richard Campbell. The Greene Co. Tn History says that Rebecca Hawkins's father was Joseph Hawkins and Anneke Jane Edwards who came from England and arrived in Virginia in 1658.

Subj: CROCKETT, ROBERT Date: 98-05-23 00:09:26 EDT From: wlcrab@netusa1.net (Wilma Gibson) To: JPayne5744@aol.com I, among a lot of others, am direct decendent of Robert Crockett and wife Margaret?? I have his will, and the children named in it. He has decendant in Fentress and Pickett Cos., TN and Clinton Co., KY that I know of and one grandson moved off to TX and there might have been others. I do not have every single decendantm but several and I have my direct line and there are other lines that come in ever so often. William Crockett m. Deliah Pile 1910 in Overton Co., TN is my ancestor. Deliah Pile is the d/o Conrod Pyle. Their son Conrod Pile Crockett b. ca. 1825 m. Mary Anderson is mygg-grandfather, their daughter Mary Elizabeth b. 1865 m. Wm. Pearson Delk is my g-grandmother, she died in 1892 the day her twins were born, so I think she died in childbirth. Their daughter Ada Delk b. 1889 d. 1914 m. Cleve Crabtree are my parental grandparents. I do have "holes" in my inforamtion, I am not sure when C. P. and Mary Anderson were married, I do not know where Robert or William or Conrod are burried, or Deliah. William died in April right after his father decease, he was killed in a hunting accident, according to Deliah pension papers ( he was in the War of 1812), in fact it appears that all of Robert Crocketts sons were dead before 1850. His "Plantation" as far as I can determine is/was just north of the TN/KY line in what is now Clinton Co., KY. One of his s-i-l's owned a lot of land just south in TN, in a place still known as Travisville. I also have a will for a Samuel Crockett in Wayne Co., KY that appears to be a different set of Crocketts, at least I have never found the families together in any kind of doucuments, his widow married a Montgomery I think, and his son William appears in the Wayne county census through 1880. I know this is bits and pieces and I have had a lot of help from other people as well as my own research, if you are intersted in this part of the Crockett family, please let me know. Wilma Crabtree Gibson (92) David Stern "Davy" CROCKETT, (John CROCKETT, David, William CROCKETT, Joseph, Antoine CROCKETAGNE, Gabriel DE CROCKETAGNE) was born Aug 17, 1786 in Limestone, Greene Co., Tn, and on Aug 12, 1806 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., Tn, married (142) Mary Polly FINLEY, daughter of William FINLEY and Jean KENNEDY, who was born about 1790 in Tn. David Davy died on Mar 6, 1836 in The Alamo, San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas. Mary Polly died in 1814 in Jefferson Co., Tn. My Finley / Doak Webpage After leaving his father in Greene Co. Tn Davy and his new wife Polly Finley moved into the duck and elk river section of Lincoln Co., TN on the head of Mulberry Fork. He began to distinguish himself as a hunter. He lived there during the years of 1809-10, then moved to Franklin Co. and settled on Beans Creek, where he remained until the close of the WAR of 1812. When the Creek Indians opened hostilities by butchery at Fort Mimms, August 30, 1812 the malitia was called for the purpose of raising volunteers. Davy volunteered. He was in Capt. Jones' Mounted Vols. They went to Beatty Springs where he went with Major Gibson across the Tennessee River into Creek Nation as a spy. He chose George Russell, son of Major Russell as a partner. They returned safely and reported to Gen. Coffee. Davy and 800 of Gen. Coffee's volunteers crossed the Tennessee river through Huntsville, Ala, and on the river to Muscle Shoals and Melton's Bluff, next to Black Warrior's Town, near the present city of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Davy asked permission of Gen. Coffee to go hunting and there he killed a bear. He fought in the battle at Fort Strother, Fort Talledega and the battle of Talledega. He then joined the Army for the Florida Expedition and rejoined Gen. Russell again to do battle with the British. "I leave this rule when I am dead. Be always sure you are right, then go ahead." He returned to Tennessee to find his wife dying. After her death he was obliged to marry Elizabeth Patton, who had been left with two children after her husbands death, Davy felt his young children needed a mother. Davy soon moved from Lawrence Co. Tn because he thought it sickly. He moved to the head of Shoal Creek where he was appointed magistrate. when the Legislature added Giles Co. he was elected Col. of a regiment and became known as Col. Crockett He was elected to the Legislature in 1821. After his term in Washington his next move was further west in Tennessee, to Obion Co. where there were few settlers. He was elected Justice of the Peace, and would sign his name with the following caption. "Be always sure you are right, then go ahead." He returned to the Legislature in 1823-24 opposing Gen. Andrew Jackson for U.S. Senator. He served 2 terms in Congress, 1827-33 but was defeated by the "Indian Bill" and Gen. Jackson in 1834. During a trip to Philadelphia in 1823, he was presented his famous long rifle "Betsy" which contained the following inscription: "Presented to the Honorable David Crockett of Tennessee by the young men of Philadelphia." This inscription is on the barrel in gold, and near the sight is the motto: "Go ahead" in letters of silver. Davy and five survivors gave their lives for freedom. Davy's last memoranda were dated March 5, and as he was slain March 6. He writes writes: "Pop, pop, pop! Boom, boom, boom! Throughout the day. No time for memorandums now, Go Ahead! Liberty and Independance forever! General Castrillion, in command of the Mexican Army, was brave and not cruel, and disposed to save the prisoners. He marched them up to that part of the fort where stood Santa Anna and his murderous crew. "The steady, fearless and undaunted tread of Colonel Crockett on this occasion, together with the bold demeanor of the hardy veteran had a powerful effect on all present. Nothing dauted, he marched up boldly in front of Santa Anna, and looked him sternly in the face while Castrillion addressed "his excellency," Sir, here are six prisoners I have taken alive, how shall I dispose of them?" " Why do you bring them to me?" At the same time several officers plunged their swords into the bosoms of their defenseless prisioners. Col. Crockett seeing the act of treachery, instantly sprang like a tiger at the ruffian chief, but before he could reach him, a dozen swords were sheathed in his heart, and he fell and died without a groan, a frown on his brow, and a smile of scorn and defiance on his lips." The bodies of the slain were then thrown into a mass in the center of the Alamo and burned! Thus ended the life of one of the Nation's best, a man loved and honored by all who knew him. A man who had a keen sense of humor and justice to all people, freedom was his battle cry. So it was that David Crockett gave his life that his country might be free. "Thermopylae had her messenger of defeat! But the Alamo had none." In the book Family History Including, Hughes, Henderson, Winston and Dalton compiled by Lucy Henderson Horton I thought the following appropriate as the Hughes mentioned is probably directly related to the same Hughes family and Fulkerson family that first settled Tazewell, TN, Claiborne County. Archelaus Hughes, son of Col. Archelaus Hughes, who commanded a Virginia regiment during the Revolutionary War, and his wife, Mary Dalton, was born about 1771. Archelaus II married Nancy Martin, daughter of William Martin and his wife, Rachel Dalton. Two brothers married sisters, and these sisters were their first cousins. At any rate Archelaus Hughes II had a son Archelaus M. Hughes III who came to Tennessee to live when a boy. He first made his home in Williamson County with his uncle, Gen. William Martin. From Williamson Co., he moved to Dresden, Tenn to live and while living there became a candidate for congress. His opponet was Davy Crockett. Archelaus M. Hughes wrote to his uncle, Gen. William Martin, of Williamson Co., from Dresden, Tenn, Aug. 30, 1837, in which he says: "I was badly beaten for congress by young Crockett. No man could have beaten him at this time. I knew it, but as I was first out, I would not back down." In the book Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography on page 1123 there is a David L. Payne born Dec. 20, 1836 in Farimont, Indiana and died Nov 27, 1884 Wellingon, Kansas whose mother was a first cousin to Davy Crockett's mother. Vital dates from Michael A. From: Gary Swift gswift@netcom.com Hello, Joy Bland and Kenneth Hendrick have both replied to my previous post about the children of David "Davy" Stern Crockett, specifically that Elizabeth Jane is not found as his daughter by Elizabeth Patton. As noted in my post, this comes from Davy's "Narrative". The full title is "A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee" by David Crockett himself. The edition I have is a facsimile of the original, heavily annotated by James A. Shackfor and Stanley J. Folmsbee. The references to David and Elizabeth (Patton) Crockett's children is on page 127 where David mentions his second marriage and that they both had a "first crop". A footnote in the margin reads: 8. Yet this is about the last notice Crockett gives of his "second crop"; it would appear that he was partial to his first set of children, to whome he was writing up to the time of his death. Perhaps there were letters also to the others, but none are extant. The second group of children were Robert Patton (b. 1816), Elizabeth Jane (b. 1818), Rebeckah Elvira (Sissy, b. 1819), and Matilda (b. 1821). Torrence, "Crockett", 12. So apparently they took this list of chidren from Torrence's book, which I have not seen, and which I understand is quite rare. I am not defending any of this information, but simply passing on what I found in response to the original query. I made note of this tidbit because I have a Jane or Jane Elizabeth Crockett I am trying to proove, so any Jane or Elizabeth Crockett interests me. Like most all Crockett descendants, we have family lore that she was somehow related to "Davy". This same edition of his "Narrative" compares and critiques the siblings of "Davy" as written by Torrance and French-Armstrong. Torrance lists a sister of Davy named Jane b. about 1792. This is about 12 years too soon to be my Jane Crockett. The alleged daughter of Davy, Elizabeth Jane b. 1818 would be about 12 years too late to be my Jane. A David Crockett and Mary "Polly" Nosler had an Elizabeth Jane, but she was way too late to be my Jane. If anybody has a Jane or Elizabeth or Jane Elizabeth Crockett b. about 1805 and from Franklin, Cumberland or Armstrong Co., PA, please tell me about her. She married John Lopeman about 1827. Davy Crockett's Daughter Dead
Mrs. Matilda Fields passed away Sunday Last

On July 6, 1890, died at the home of her daughter in Kenton, Mrs. Matilda
Fields, in the 69th year of her age. She was the youngest daughter of Davy
Crockett. She had three brothers and two sisters, all of whom she outlived.
Mrs. Fields married three times. Her first husband was Thomas Tyson; her
second was James Wilson; and the third, R. Fields. By her second marriage
she became step-mother to esteemed fellow citizen, W.H. Wilson.

In girlhood she was remarkably handsome, of vivacious temperament, fond of
dancing and carried into all company the sunshine of her own joyous
disposition. In her early womanhood she became a convert to the Christian
faith and joined the Methodist Church and lived up to the time of her death
an upright, consistent and devoted member. She inherited the firmness and
candor of her father; was rather slow to reach conclusions and tenacious of
them when formed. She exemplified fully his noted maxim, "Be sure you're
right, then go ahead."

Her education was quite limited owing to lack of schools in her early years
for West Tennessee was then a new country and sparsely settled. Yet she was
a woman of clear mind and adhered to duty with unyielding fidelity. She died
surrounded by all her living children; Mrs. Mary Floyd, Mrs. Candace
Edmundson, and Mrs. Sallie Bryant and a host of relatives and friends.

Hi Joe.
I saw you're web site and thought it was great!
My 3rd great grandmother was Mary CROCKETT, b. 1838.
All that is known about her parents is that her father was John
CROCKETT. I know that Mary Crockett married William CROUCH on 03 Feb 1853 in Obion Cty, TN.
It is believed in my family but not proven that
Mary Crockett is the niece of "Davy" Crockett.
My question to you is, do you know of anyone who is
researching the line of Davy Crockett's brother John, b. 1805?
I haven't been able to find anything about this John Crockett. Thank you, Sincerely, Debbie Schnell

James does have a daughter named Mary, but I have her DOB as in the early 1800's. There is also no son from Davy's parents named John, that I am aware of. There could be several Grandsons named John but none that are Davy's Brothers. My great-great-great grandmother, Lauretta Ann Crockett, who was a great neice of Davy, married a Samuel Wintermute Snell (old German spelling: Schnell). Small world that two different people are connecting to the same names, but may not be related. If you have any questions, contact me. Joe Freeman Lubbock, Texas

Researcher Kathryn E. Jones said in "Crockett Cousins" (page 81) that she is not certain that he is, since there were apparently several William Crocketts in the same area of Tennessee. I have no reason to doubt Orita's information. Please post more source information and maybe some of those questions can be laid aside with a new supplement to the "Crockett Cousins" book.
