Many of you "Old Timers" may remember the old Payne Brother's building pictured above, that was built by my grandfather and great uncle, L.G. and Bob Payne, that sat on the curve in Lone Mountain. reminded me of something that happened back in the early 1970's. Before the building was torn down it sat vacant for many years. It was used to manufacture and store pallets by one of the local manufacturing company's who rented it guess which one. My father decided to inspect the building along with his brother Tom one evening. They happened upon a 500 gallon "moonshine still" located in the basement of the building and reported it to then Sheriff Bill Hurst who promptly evacuated the still from the building. The time was soon after Sisal Ray left to take a position with the The Alcohol Tax Unit, State of Tennessee after working for several years with my Uncle Tom at Payne Motor Company, my father had long since "pulled out" of the Payne Brother's business to work his job with the United States Post Office Department. The PALLET FACTORY was operated by the Bush Brothers and from all indication had no idea the 500 gallon still was located in the basement of the building they were renting. My father always used it as an example of what can happen to vacant land and buildings and prompted me to "keep an eye" on our remote 145 acre farm located in the Lower Caney Valley area of Claiborne County. One reason many of you saw me "bumming around" during the 1980's. People just can't help but "screw around" with the families of those "Federal Men".Click on the image for more Payne Family Pictures
