Notes for Jonathan JENNINGS:
In Carroll 1765-1815 it talks of Jonathan and his part in history. He married Diannah Bobbitt, daughter of James Bobbitt and was the brother-in-law of William Bobbit who was Capt. of the militia during the Revolution. Tobias Phillips had enrolled in this malitia Company but the roll carries him as "not fit" presumably meaning that he was not able to attend muster. Tobias did claim reimbursement for provisions furnished to the Montgomery militia under Major Cloyd while they had apparently camped on his property in a Tory hunting expedition. Jonathan Jennings served in Col. William Christian's Co. (not to be confused with Col. Gilbert Christian who fought in the Watauga Settlement area about the same time and who John Payne served )in an expedition against the Cherokees. He evidently went to Kentucky because his widow was taxed in Mercer County Ky in 1795. George and John Phillips had witnessed land grants in Bedford County where Jonathan had lived for many years. In Bedford deeds in 1769 refer to Jonathan as "of Pittsylvania.

Notes for Diannah BOBBITT: This again is in Carroll 1765-1815. I am getting more information from the Churchs CD ROM and adding it to the Bobbitt lineage.

George Phillips became a prosperous planter in Richmond Co. and Pittsylvania Counties He married (1) Hannah Goadin the late 1740's and (2) Ann Dodson Cornelius. George Phillips and Thomas Lawrence and their families moved to the Piedmont region of southwest Va by late 1764. George Phillips and Thomas Lawrence (His Half Brother) were taxed as a family unit in the county in 1767. In 1781, George was assessed 146 pounds for the Continental Army in Pittsylvania Co., Va and he d. there after 1788. North Farnham Parish Records show a son George Phillips b. to George and Hannah Phillips 20 Mr 1758. George's Revolutionary War Record is claimed in the DAR's No. 54889.

Notes for Hannah GOAD: This is documented in a record in Bedford County, VA of a marriage contract made in 1768 between George Phillips (the proven father of Tobias) and Mary Jennings; the document (Bedford, D.B. 3-193) describes George as "of Pittsylvania County" and Mary as a widow "of Bedford". It should be remembered that a John and George Phillips witnesssed Jonathan Jennings' Bedford deeds in 1769.

The marriage probably occurred after 1760 since Phillips family researchers say that George Phillips' first wife, Hannah, was alive in 1760. George Phillips was the son of Tobias and Hannah Goad Phillips. His other, after the death of Tobias, married William Dodson. Ann was the niece of Hannah Goad Phillips Dodson, her mother, Alice, and Hannah being sisters. Ann apparently came to Pittsylvania County with Hannah Dodson and family about 1766. She probably died in Henry Co., VA., date not established. It is not known if Ann had children by George Phillips. She apparently had children by Moses Cornelius, a son who was a soldier in the Rev. War. No children of this marriage in these records.

He also married on Mar 21, 1768, (293) Mary JENNINGS who was born about 1750 in Bedford Co., Va. No children of this marriage in these records.
