Descendants of Jonathan JENNINGS
This Jennings family from Pittsylvania Co., Va is believed to be the proginators of the
Jennings families in Claiborne Co. TN

FIRST GENERATION
(1) Jonathan1 JENNINGS was born in 1730 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, USA, and about 1749, married (2) Diannah BOBBITT, daughter of James BOBBITT and Elizabeth DALTON, who was born about 1730 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, USA. Jonathan died in 1784 at Mercer Co., Ky. Diannah died after 1795 at Mercer Co., Kentucky, USA.
Notes for Jonathan JENNINGS:
In Carroll 1765-1815 it talks of Jonathan and his part in history. He married Diannah Bobbitt, daughter of James Bobbitt and was the brother-in-law of William Bobbit who was Capt. of the militia during the Revolution. Tobias Phillips had enrolled in this malitia Company but the roll carries him as "not fit" presumably meaning that he was not able to attend muster. Tobias did claim reimbursement for provisions furnished to the Montgomery militia under Major Cloyd while they had apparently camped on his property in a Tory hunting expedition.

Jonathan Jennings served in Col. William Christian's Co. in an expedition against the Cherokees. He evidently went to Kentucky because his widow was taxed in Mercer county Ky in 1795.

George and John Phillips had witnessed land grants in Bedford County where Jonathan Jennings had lived for many years. In Bedford deeds in 1769 refer to Jonathan as "of Pittsylvania".

Notes for Diannah BOBBITT: This again is in Carroll 1765-1815.

(6) Margaret Peggy2 JENNINGS, (Jonathan1 JENNINGS) was born about 1753 at North Farmington, Richmond Co., Virginia, USA, and about 1767, married (21) Tobias PHILLIPS, son of George PHILLIPS and HANNAH GOAD, who was born Jan 25, 1749/1750 at North Farnham Pr, Richmond Co., Virginia, USA. Tobias died on Jul 2, 1808 at Greasy Creek, Grayson Co., Virginia, USA and was buried at Plantation Cem, Floyd Co., Greasy Creek, Virginia.
Notes for Tobias PHILLIPS:
The notes from this entry are recorded from copies of an article, pp. 134-135, Carroll 1765-1815, The Settlements, by John Perry Alderman. I also had the article recorded in the Winter 1992 Edition of Reflections, Claiborne County Historical Society Newsletter. I received a letter early in 1982 from Mrs. Phyllis G. Phillips, Rt 1, Box 59A, Indian Valley, Va. 24105. That records the lineage of Tobias Phillips and his 13 children. I intend to try and contact her soon regarding a Phillips Family Reunion since I have now gotten a complete Phillips family background. The children are all from the two articles mentioned above. Tobias was listed on the Pittsylvania records in 1772 after its formation in 1767 from what was Richmond Co., I presume, when he bought five slaves from a Hannah Dodson: two years later she sold him 150 acres, may have been a relative. Yes, she was his grandmother Hannah Goad Phillips married after her husband Tobias died to William Dodson of Richmond Co. about 1748. I retrieved the date of death and the place in from the Ancestral File LDS Ordinance Data (AFN:KJ9M-R6). The Church only lists one child Frances but the other two sources I have list the rest. From the Book CARROLL 1765 - 1815.

In August 1780, Col. Walter Crockett at Fort Chiswell advised sending the militia into Greasy Creek and towards the Flower Gap. Thereafter the Montgomery militia did from time to time come into the country searching for Tories, because Tobias Phillips, Andrew Cock and William Bobbitt furnished them with supplies. The DAR PATRIOT INDEX contains the names of Revolutionary patriots, both men and women, whose service (between 1774-1783) and identity have been established by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution from its organization in October 1890. Included with the alphabetically listed names are the dates of birth and death, names of wife or husband, rank or type of service, and the State where the patriot lived or served. If pension papers are known to exist, this fact is indicated.

Notes for Robert "Big Robin" GOAD: Robert (Big Robin) Goad of Grayson/Carroll p. 20 They had eleven children Robert was the eldest son of Aaron and Rachel and was born in 1812. He was dubbed "Big Robin" by his contemporaries for a very obvious reason as he was reputed to hae weighed 505 pounds. He rode in a wagon as he could obviously not ride a horse and he sat on two chairs. Even this did not prevent his being drafted into the Confederate "home guards" when he was over fifty years of age. He married Allie Durnel, daughter of John and Diannah (Jennings) Durnel on October 19, 1830 in Grayson County. Robert died in 1872 and Allie lived on into the 1880's. They raised a family of eleven children. Their six sons all served in the Confederate Army and one, John T. Goad, was apparently lost in the Atlanta campaign of 1864. He never returned home and his fate was not known by his family as far as we can determine.

Re: Joseph Payne's Line 6/05/96 Issue
From: Sharon Wehry
Hi Joe-
I am just getting around to going over your line that appeared in the June 5th Gang Letter. Following is for whatever it is worth to you: I have Thomas s/o Timothy Dalton/Elizabeth Phillips as born 1800. This is based on his 1850 Carroll Co, VA census which shows Fam #158 Thomas Dalton 50, Polly 35, Wesley J 17, Jonathan 15, Thomas 13, Susanna 11, Henry C 6, Christina 5, Jahue 3, and Sally 1.

Another researcher, Mary Ann Sutphin, told me that Mary Jennings was the dau of Jonathan and Nancy HensonJennings.

On Susannah Elizabeth Dalton Goad, I have 3 additional children which I got also from Mary Ann. These are from "Cemetery Records of Carroll Co, VA by Carroll Co Historial Society":

Pg 241 Elias D. Goad 1850-1929 Walter Goad Cemetery Pg 528 Ballard Preston Goad 1847-1937 Largen Cemetery Pg 581 Thomas J. Goad 1856-1928 Love Cemetery Leah F. Goad 1861-1948 Love Cemetery she is w/o Thomas J. and dau of James and Leanna Love, she is 2nd wife. Pg 204 Alexander Goad 1861-1956 Cox Cemetery s/o Eli and Elizabeth Gardner Goad

The same researcher has provided the following data regarding marked graves which are found in Wm. Dalton Cemetery, Rt 221, Carroll Co, VA and they are near a bunch of unmarked graves for Daltons and Largens: Gardner, Mrs. Emily d 97 yrs 2 Jan 1909 Gardner, James 15 Jan 1802-12 Aug 1902 age 100 yr 5 m 22 d

Among the unmarked graves in the nearby area according to tradition are:

Dalton, William Dalton, Elizabeth Turman Largen, William Largen, Nancy Dalton Largen, Susanna Dalton, Lewis Dalton, Timothy - has a marker, no dates. Dalton, Elizabeth Phillips Dalton, Thomas Dalton, Mary Jennings

I would appreciate it if you would let me know your source for (1) bd of Thomas, s/o Tim/Elizabeth Phillips and (2)db for James Gardner both of which conflict with the information above. Please tell me which one you consider the correct date, yours or those I got from other researcher. I will appreciate your opinion. Hope this helps. Sharon
