This obviously is not the above John Alexander Johns of the (14) John Alexander5 JOHNS, (Robert4 JOHNS, William3, Richard2, Roger1) line but does give reference to the Johns Hopkins University connection of the Johns family.

Hello Joe,
It was the efforts of Dr. Horace H. Hayden and Dr. Chapin A. Harris in the year 1840 that the Maryland General Assembly chartered the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.

Dr. Samuel Chew was on the board of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
Which actually became the Dental Department of the University of Maryland.

Dr. Samuel Chew married Mary Galloway, her sister Ann Galloway married  Isaac Johns.

Margaret Johns Hopkins was the sister of Isaac Johns and the mother of  Johns Hopkins of the University.

The oral history written by Mary Johns says Dr. John Alexander Johns , medical doctor and doctor of dental surgery went to Johns Hopkins.

I find the university did not exist for the dates for Dr John A. Johns' life, born 18 July 1827 Lunenburg County Virginia and died 10 Jan. 1878 near the Meherrin Post Office which is on the line of the counties of  Prince Edward and Lunenburg. However, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery did exist in Dr. Johns time frame.

This bit of information may help show the connection between the Johns in Virginia and Maryland.

Dr. John A. Johns M.D. D.D.S. married in Baltimore Md. in 1851,the daughter of Dr. Samuel Mainster, Laura Jackson Mainster.

Dr. John A. Johns' wife and son are both buried some were in Baltimore Md.

We don't find Dr. Johns in the 1850 Lunenburg Co. Va. census with his father. We do find an Alexander Johns in the Baltimore 1850 census listed with the  surname Callow.

Dr. John A. Johns' wife, Laura J. Mainster, Laura's brother Jacob married Mary  A. Hopkins of Baltimore Md.

The Bishop of Virginia John Johns was related to Isaac Johns of Maryland and the Bishop's Cousin was Horace E. Hayden

The Book Virginia Baptist Ministers by George B. Taylor third series also states John Johns of Virginia was related to Richard Johns of
Maryland , who is the father to Isaac Johns.

Three facts that could help
[1] was Mary A. Hopkins related to Margaret Johns Hopkins?
[2] the records of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
[3] information on Dr. Mainster being connected to the College or University.
