In part: On the color line Born during the Civil War of slave parents, destiny had great plans for Fredrick McGhee. By Fred Brown, News-Sentinel senior writer In talking of Fredrick McGhee, His father, Abraham, a McGhee family slave from Blount County, had been sold 13 years before and sent to the John Walker cotton plantation near Aberdeen, Miss., where new fertile land, black as coal and rich as gold, stretched across the horizon. Fredrick's mother, Sarah, already a slave on the Walker plantation, was the daughter of a "full-blood African from the continent." One of the few details that has survived is a bill of sale for Abraham from Barclay McGhee, the son of Abraham's original owner, Dr. Alexander McGhee of Blount County, who died in 1842. Barclay sold Abraham to John Rorix, a slave trader. ...thinks Fredrick was helped by his brothers, Barclay and Matthew and his uncle, Barclay McGhee who was by this time a coachman for the wealthy railroad magnate, Col. Charles McClung McGhee, who had amassed a fortune in banking and railroads. Fredrick McGhee's remarkable story unfolds in a new biography, "Fredrick L. born in Iredell Co., but the facts show the family lived directly on the
line between Iredell and Mecklenburg Co. and about 15 miles from the old
Sugar Creek Chruch. This we find the Oldest son of Barclay McGhee marrying
into a Mecklenburg Co. Family. That is more proof that the McGhee family
probably originated in Mecklenburg Co., NC."

"Mamye Sue McGhee never married. She is still very much
alive at this writing (1949) and lives on the old McGhee homeplace on the
Little Tennessee River, not far from the town of Vonore. She calls herself
a "dirt farmer", reads the newspapers, the Madisonville Democrat and goes
to town occasionally and "jay walks" in spite of the traffic lights. I
think she also listens to the rado and keeps up with politics. She wort
me: "My great great grandfather was Barclay McGhee, who came from Lancaster
Co., Pennsylvania, to Tennessee, in 1767, settling first in Sevier County,
then finally landed in Maryville. His old home stood on Main Street there
until some few years ago, when it was rolled back to give room to a Filling
Stations (Ye Gods). I had two of the old fashioned hand made nails, and
the door had iron corners, et." In deferenct to Miss Mamye Sue's version
of the nativity of her reverned ancestor, as opposed to what I have written,
be it known that Lancaster Co., Penn joined Cecil Co., Maryland, and most
of it, until the boundary line was settled in 1774 was included in Cicil

of James White from Iredell and Mecklenburt Co., NC."
Col. Charles McGhee established the Lawson McGhee Library in Knoxville, in memory of his daughter Mary Lawson McGhee, who married to Sheley Williams, and died shortly after the marriage.
Charles McClung McGhee, Southern Financier, MacArthur (McClung Collection)
John, was born in or near the site of the present town of Maryville, some eighteen miles south of Knoxville. Barclay McGhee and his three sons became merchants and seem to have prospered. Barclay is known to have done considerable business with the U. S. government in supplying of the garrison at Tellico in 1797-98. When he died in 1819, he was referred to as "Barkley McGhee, Esp., late a contractor in the U. S. Army, a useful member of society and a man of unblemished integrity., Knoxville, Register, August 31, 1819.
John McGhee was known as a "merchant of Maryville" at
the time of his marriage, soon became a planter as well and began to acquire
lands which were to be his great domain on the Little Tennessee.

My mind runs back to the time when I attended school
on Ball Creek, near where Mr. W. H. Farmer now lives. The school was taught
by Rev. Nathan S. McDowell I still remember many of my old schoolmates
that I became attached to in the neighborhood of Lone Mountain. They were:
the Days, the Breedings, the Johnstons, the Hursts, the Jennings, the Shumates,
the Hodges, the Leabows, the Cardwells, the Herrells, the Bowls, the Ragens,
and many other too tedious to mention. I love to think of those good old
citizens that used to live around in that neighborhood in 1837 when I was
young; but they have all passed away long since, and most of thos old schoolmates
also, and those of us that are still living have changed so much in our
appearance from young to old that when we meet we don not recognize each
other.
