(13) McKendry3 Edwards, (Artemicia2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born about 1847 in Claiborne County, Tn, and about 1865 in Claiborne County, Tn, married Hester A. Ausmus, daughter of John C. Ausmus and Cynthia (AUSMUS), who was born about 1848 in Tennessee.

BIO: The 1850 census gives this child's name as "McKendra EDWARDS" age 4, male, born in Tennessee. The index to Claiborne County Probate Records does not list a son by this name, but does refer to a daughter as "Martha m. __?__McKindry" "Old Speedwell Families" lists McKendry as the first child born to Spencer and Artemicia O'DELL EDWARDS. Per this reference McKendry married twice..first to Hester AUSMUS and next to Katherine SIMMONS. Compiler has found neither marriage record as of AUG 1996. "McKindry EDWARDS" is enumerated in his mother's household as "13" years of age in 1860. On the 1870 census, "McKenzie" EDWARDS, 22, is head of the household next door to his brother, Jeptha, and two doors from his mother. "McKenzie" is listed as a farmer, born in TN; Hester A., his wife, is 21. The couple has 3 children, all under the age of 4. Lawrence EDWARDS records five children for "McKendry": Frank md Cornelia SHELBY Spencer md#1: Martha O'DELL md#2: Rosie SIMMONS Calloway (b. July 8, 1884) md Loda HALEY Melissa md Conrad KECK Mary md Press BEASON Children listed on the 1870 census for "McKenzie" and Hester A. EDWARDS are - John, 3; William F., 2 (maybe "Frank"?); and Mary E., 1. Estimating McKendry's birth year is difficult since his age in 1850 was "4", in 1860 "13" and 1870 "22." Compiler has selected the middle of these three records to calculate an approximate year of birth. The 1880 census shows "McKindrey" as 33 years of age, Hester Ann as 32. Still living in the household are John A., William F., Mary E., Jacob S., Benjamin, David M, and Spencer. "Artiemacey EDWARDS, 64," (Artemicia O'DELL EDWARDS) McKendry's mother, is enumerated in his household, too. She is classified as "widowed."

BIO: Dec. 1996: Compiler found the household of John C. AUSMUS on the 1860 census for Claiborne County. One of the children enumerated in this house- hold is "Hester A., 12, F, b. TN." Since Hester was within one year of the age of McKindry EDWARDS on the same census, compiler has assumed this to be the family of Hester, McKindry's wife. Hester Ann was 32 years old at the time of the enumeration of the 1880 census for Claiborne Co.; she and McKindry reported seven children between the ages of 14 and 3 plus McKindry's 64-year-old mother, "Artiemacey" (O'DELL) EDWARDS in their household.

Children:
64 1 John A.4 Edwards was born about 1866 in Claiborne County, TN (?).
BIO: John is enumerated as 3 years of age in his parents home in Claiborne County, TN on the 1870 census. He appears to be the oldest of the couple's three children at that time. Interestingly enough, John is not mentioned as one of the four children of McKindry EDWARDS listed in the first Lawrence EDWARDS books concerning the old Speedwell families. John appears as 14 years of age on the 1880 census in McKindry's household.

65 2 William F. "Frank" (?) Edwards was born about 1868 in Claiborne County, TN (?).
BIO: This child of McKendry and Hester (AUSMUS) EDWARDS is enumerated as "William F." on the 1870 census; his age is given as 2 years. Lawrence EDWARDS, in his first book about the old Speedwell families, lists "Frank" as the first child of this couple. He also gives Frank's wife as Cornelia SHELBY. Compiler suspects "Frank" and "William F." are one in the same, but further research is needed to make this conclusion. William F. appears as a 12-year-old on the 1880 census, working on his father's farm.

66 3 Mary E. Edwards was born about 1869 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: Mary E. was only one year of age, as enumerated on the 1870 census (01 Aug. 1870) and 11 on the 1880 enumeration. Per Lawrence EDWARDS, in his "OLD SPEEDWELL FAMILIES," Mary married Press BEASON.

67 4 Jacob S. Edwards was born about 1871 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: Jacob S. is shown as 9 years of age on the 1880 census. He does not appear in Lawrence EDWARDS', "OLD SPEEDWELL FAMILIES."
REF: 1. U.S. Census 1880 TN; Claiborne Co.; 12th CD; ED #110; p 18; #147/#148. MF #T9-1248.
68 5 Benjamin Edwards was born about 1873 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: Benjamin is seven years old per the 1880 census enumeration on 15 June 1880. Benjamin does not appear by this name in Lawrence EDWARDS' "OLD SPEEDWELL FAMILIES."
REF: 1. U.S. Census 1880 TN; Claiborne Co.; 12th CD; ED #110; p 18; #147/#148. MF T9-1248.
69 6 David M. Edwards was born about 1875 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: David M. is enumerated as 5 years of age on 15 June 1880. David does not appear in Lawrence EDWARDS' "OLD SPEEDWELL FAMLIES."
REF: 1. U.S. Census 1880 TN; Claiborne Co.; 12th CD; ED #110; p 18; #147/#148. MF T9-1248.
70 7 Spencer Edwards, III. was born 22 Nov 1877 in Claiborne County, Tn, and married Martha Ann O'Dell, daughter of Marshall Love O'Dell and Sarah M. Edwards, who was born 19 Feb 1875 in Claiborne County, Tn. Spencer died on 28 Oct 1948.
BIO: Spencer is the second child listed in Lawrence EDWARDS' book in the family of McKendry EDWARDS. There are no dates of birth, death or marriage listed for Spencer, but it is reported that he was married first to Martha O'DELL and second to Rosie SIMMONS. Per the 1880 census, Spencer is the youngest of McKindry and Hester Ann's children; he is 3 years of age on enumeration day, June 15, 1880. 20 APR 1997: Compiler received a message from Denny and Marla BRUBAKER of San Antonio, TX containing data on Spencer, the son of McKendry EDWARDS, and Spencer's second wife, "Rosa SIMMONS." Data included was birth and death dates for both Spencer and Rosa, as well as their place of burial.

BIO: Marshall Love O'DELL, in completing an update form for the Pension Bureau, named each of his living children and their dates of birth. Martha Ann's was among those listed. Lawrence EDWARDS, in the first book about the Speedwell Families, reported that Martha Ann O'DELL was the first wife of Spencer EDWARDS, the son of McKendry EDWARDS. There was no data for Martha Ann or for her husband provided in that book. Marjories WALSH, in her article about the Bartlett O'DELL families, included Martha Ann as one of the children of Marshall, Ms. WALSH's direct ancestor. Although her father cited a specific birthdate for Martha Ann, her age as shown on the 1880 census was "7". This would calculate to a year of birth of 1873 +/- a year.

He also married Rosa Simmons who was born 19 Apr 1886. Rosa died on 26 Mar 1949.
BIO: Lawrence EDWARDS, in his first book about the Speedwell families, reported that Spencer, son of McKendry EDWARDS, married first to Martha Ann O'DELL. His second marriage was to "Rosie SIMMONS." EDWARDS did not include any dates for either marriage, or parents, etc. for Rosie SIMMONS. 20 APR 1997: Denny and Marla BRUBAKER of San Antonio, TX, contacted compiler with the data for "Rosa SIMMONS" and exact birth and death dates for Spencer. The BRUBAKERs have also furnished the place of burial for this couple.

(16) Lavisa3 Lay, (Mary2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born about 1842 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 9 Aug 1858 in Campbell County, Tn, married James S. Brown, son of James R. Brown and Sarah Alder, who was born about 1838 in Campbell County, In. Lavisa died in Yavapai County, Az. James S. died in Brown Springs Yavapai County, Az.

Mrs. McCARTY cites as her sources of data on this couple: Marriage Records of Campbell County, TN Census records.

BIO: Concerning Lavisa LAY, the daughter of Mary P. and "Jack", Eva McCARTY wrote the following: "Lavisa was the second child of John "Jack" and Mary Pauline O'DELL LAY. She was married to James BROWN on Aug. 9, 1858 in Campbell Co., TN. She and her husband had to leave Tennessee and they went to California. Then on to the Verde Valley of Arizona. They had one daughter named Sarah. Sarah married a man named Davis and they adopted a daughter named Ella Davis. Sarah died at an early age and James and Lavisa took Ella and raised her. Ella married Joe LAY's brother, Jame Robert LAY, who was called "Doc". Lavisa is buried in the Cottonwood Cemetery, Cottonwood, AZ next to her brother Elijah and his wife. Her husband killed or thought he killed a man in Tennessee and they left so he would not have to stand trial. Apparently, he was a wealthy man." Per the 1850 census, "Lavicy" was 8 years of age; in 1860, she was already married and away from the LAY household. After proofreading compiler's transcription on this individual, Mrs. McCARTY corrected the date of this marriage to "8/9/1858." (Compiler had recorded "09/20 ?")

BIO: Per Eva McCARTY, James BROWN and Lavisa LAY were married on 09 AUG 1858 in Campbell County, TN. "She and her husband had to leave Tennessee and they went to California. Then on to Verde Valley of Arizona. They had one daughter named Sarah. Sarah married a man by the name of Davis and they adopted a daughter named Ella Davis. Sarah died at an early age and James and Levisa took Ella and raised her. ... Her" (compiler thinks this refers to Lavisa) "husband killed or thought he killed a man in Tennessee, and they left so he would not have to stand trial. Apparently he was a very wealthy man." After proofreading material from compiler, Mrs. McCARTY added the following note: "1858 Register of Names to Marriage Licenses. Page 347-348 James S. (17) Elizabeth3 Lay, (Mary2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born about 1843 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 7 Jul 1862 in Campbell County, Tn, married James H. CURNUTT, son of David CURNUTT and Drucilla (CURNUTT), who was born about 1842 in Campbell County, Tn. Elizabeth died in Globe (Gila) AZ. James H. died in Globe (Gila) AZ.

BIO: Mr. HEINLE reports that Elizabeth LAY was born in 1841; however her age on the 1850 census was given as "6." Eva McCARTY gives 1843 as the birthdate for Elizabeth, and the 1870 census (enumerated 14 July) gives her age as 26. Mr. HEINLE had given Elizabeth's spouse as "James H. CURNUTT." This is the spelling used for the 1870 census record, too. Researching 1860 census for Campbell County, TN on microfilm, Jan., 1997, compiler located the household of "David CORNUTT", 50, farmer, born in TN. Along with his wife, Drucilla, there are five others enumerated in this household. Among them is 18-year-old James H."CORNUTT". This family resided in the area of the Fincastle, TN post office, three households before that of John and Mary (O'DELL) LAY. In the LAY household, there is a 16-year-old Elizabeth. It is likely David and Drucilla CURNUTT are the parents of Elizabeth's husband, James H. CURNUTT. The 1870 census for Campbell Co., TN shows James and Elizabeth living next door to Elizabeth's mother, Mary Pauline (O'DELL) LAY. Enumerated in their household were James, 3; Kate, 2 and Mary "2/12." Per the 1880 census, the CURNUTTs are 38 and 37 years old respectively; there are seven children in the household ranging in age from seven months (Sarah H.) to 13 years (James M.) Concerning Elizabeth, Eva McCARTY writes as follows: "ELIZABETH, was the third child. She was born in 1843. She married a man by the name of James H. CURNUTT, on July 7, 1862 in Campbell Co. TN. They moved to Globe, AZ. They also lived in Livingston, AZ where James was Postmaster Sept. 17, 1896-Mar. 7, 1905...Elizabeth and James had eight children...Elizabeth and James are buried in Globe Cemetery, Globe, AZ."

BIO: Per Eva McCARTY's notes re the LAY family history - "James and Elizabeth moved from Campbell Co., TN to Globe, AZ. They also lived in Livingston, AZ where James was Postmaster from 1896 to 1905. Then his son, James M. was made Postmaster." Compiler has assumed the parents of James from the 1860 census, where "James H., 18" appears in the household of David CORNUTT in the 8th Civil District, Campbell County. After proofreading compiler's transcription of biographical information on this family, Mrs. McCARTY added, "...Have copy - ARIZONA TERRITORY: Post Offices and Post Masters - Livingston - James H. Children:
72 1 James M.4 CURNUTT was born in 1867 in Campbell County
BIO: Per the 1870 census, James, age 3 years, was born in TN. Since the LAY family had lived in Campbell Co. for several years, and the CURNUTTS were found there in 1870, it is likely that he was born in that County. The family moved to ARIZONA where James M. followed his father as Post Master in Livingston, AZ.

(18) David L.3 Lay, (Mary2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 4 Apr 1845 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 9 Sep 1866 in Campbell County, Tn, married Annis Elizabeth "LIZZIE" Taylor, daughter of George Taylor and Annis E. Gray, who was born 24 Feb 1846 in Monroe County, Tn. David L. died on 17 Jul 1927 in Vilas (Baca) CO. Annis Elizabeth "LIZZIE" died on 4 Jun 1936 in Vilas (Baca) CO.

"David was one of the sons who fought on the Unionon side during the Civil War. He enlisted at Boston, KY on the 10th of March 1862, as a private in Company F, 6th Tennessee Vol. Infantry. He was described as 5 ft. 8 inches; complexion fair; dark eyes; black hair, and occupation, farmer. He was detailed to the Pioneer Brigade, 3rd Battalion, Army of the Cumberland. National Archives records show he fought in the Battle of Chattanooga, Atasona, Murfreesboro and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. During his enlistment, he came down with malaria and was honorably discharged at Nashville, TN on the 24th day of March 1865. On the LAY property was a cave which became known as the "Dave LAY Cave" because he hid his troops in it during the war. Also, the family hid their valuables in it. My mother said she had been back into it for about a mile and it was very cold. On a 1900 census report, David had 900 acres of land in Campbell County, TN. The year is unknown, but David and Elizabeth moved to Oklahoma and then to Baca County, Colorado. It is said that Elizabeth was blind at the time of David's death. He had asked to be laid out under a big tree in the front yard and when they brought Elizabeth out for the funeral, she looked down at the casket and said, 'doesn't he look pretty?'"

May, 1997: Compiler established contact with Steve STAMM, a descendent of David L. and Annis Elizabeth "Lizzie" LAY. Mr. STAMM contributed more information on this couple in an e-mail message on 25 MAY -- "David LAY was buried in the LAY's Chapel cemetery. Later all the graves in the cemetery were moved to the Springfield Cemetery by Nancy Taylor (LAY) PARKER the daughter of David and Annis LAY. In the Lay's Chapel Cemetery there was a white marker that stood by the grave marking it as the grave of a Civil War veteran. We think that this marker was pushed into the open grave after the exhumation of David LAY's remains because it is not currently standing in the Springfield cemetery..." Concerning the occupation of David LAY, Mr. STAMM writes, "...He was also a veterinarian and mill operator. I have a copy of one of his veterinarian's log books. This book seemed to have been used mainly to keep notes about trips and other day to day events. Just before he moved to COLORADO, he was operating a mill. It was just below "Dave Lay Cave." My grandfather, Merl O. PARKER said that the water that ran out of that cave was very cold. He said that they used to keep much of their perishable food there. I think that I have identifed the mill as the "Blind Graves" mill that was still standing when TVA flooded the whole place in the 1930s..." To compiler's comment above that "the year is unknown, but David and Elizabeth moved to OKLAHOMA and then to Baca County, COLORADO," Mr. STAMM responds with, "The year is now known! I'll transcribe a note written by Annis Elizabeth LAY in 1915 which details their move to COLORADO from TENNESSEE." (See Annis Elizabeth TAYLOR biography, computer #1100.)

BIO: The wife of David L. LAY, son of Jack and Polly (O'DELL) LAY was first identified by Bill HEINLE, a desc. of David's younger brother, Elijah LAY. Later Eva McCARTY, a desc. of Elisha LAY, Elijah's twin brother, wrote the following about Annis Elizabeth: "...David married Annis Elizabeth TAYLOR on Sept. 9, 1866 Campbell Co. TN. I don't know the year David and Elizabeth moved to Oklahoma and on to Baca County, Colorado. David passed away July 17,1927 in Baca County Colorado. Told to me by Billie Lou Phillips Dayton, Ohio grand daughter of David and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was blind at the time of David's death. Billie Lou said, that David wanted to be laid out under a big tree in the front yard, and that when they brought Elizabeth out for the funeral, she looked down in the casket and said, 'doesn't he look pretty.'"

Per the 1870 census "Ann" was 22 years old; she was born in TN. On the next census for Campbell Co., "Anis E." was enumerated as "34." On the latter, she reported her father born in SC and her mother in NC.

May 1997: Compiler established contact with Steve STAMM, a descendent of David L. and Elizabeth (TAYLOR) LAY. In an E-mail message on 25 May, Steve wrote the following in response to a statement by compiler that the date was not known for the move of this couple to OK and CO, "...The year is now known!...a note written by Annis Elizabeth LAY in 1915 which details their move to Colorado from Tennessee. The Lay Trip West David Lay and Lizzie Lay started from Tennessee on January 27, 1913 got to Liberal Kansas Feb. 1. Went to Lizzie Nickardsons, a daughter, in Lorena, Okla, Feb 2nd, then went to see the rest of the children. Celia McNew, Dave Lay, Eva Meltabarger etc. stayed in Oklahoma until March 28, 1914, then came to Baca Co. Colorado. Got here April 2, 1914. Stayed at the Meltabargers, (who had come on out from Okla the last of April 1913) until the 17th and filed on our claim and planted our crop and stayed here til the 6th day of August, then went back to Oklahoma to see the children. Came back here the 6th day of Sept and gathered our crop, then went back to Oklahoma the 3rd day of Dec and stayed until the 25th day of Feb. and got back here the 3rd day of March. Was 7 days on the road. Drove through the snow a little every day except one day and a half we stopped. And it snowed most all the time on our trip. Wrote by Lizzie Lay this March the 13th 1915

01 June 1997: Steve STAMM mailed the first of several packets of information on the LAY family to compiler. This one contained a photocopy of the death certificate of Annis E. LAY, which provided the identities of her parents, her birthplace and date of birth, the place of birth of her father, and the name of the cemetery wher she was interred. The informant for the death certificate was Mrs. H. M. PARKER, "Lizzie's" daughter, Nancy P. PARKER.

"William Q., 'Uncle Billy'...and Louisa are both buried in Sardis Methodist Cemetery where they have a huge monument..."

In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY sent a photocopy of an article re William Quillin and his family, written by a descendent of William's son, George Calvin LAY. In this article, Mrs. EARNHART writes --

William Quillin Lay was born near Tazewell, Claiborne County, TN. on May 7, 1847. The son of John Lay and Mary Pauline O'Dell Lay, was one of a family of ten children. On the 14th day of December 1873 he was Unionted in marriage to Louisa Jane Brown in Marion County, Tennessee. Louisa Jane Brown was the daughter of George Washington Brown and America Alder Brown...

In 1867 William Quillin Lay went to Indiana near Lebanon and later to Stanton. During this time he devoted his energy to farming, and the timber business, later he occupied the position of weigher in a mine. In 1870 he took up his residence in Campbell County, Tn. and a year later, 1871, came to Marion County. For eleven years he engaged in farming near Victoria and then he purchased very desirable property at Rankin's Cove, about five miles east of Jasper. William Quillin Lay was educated in the common schools, was always a busy and a useful man. William Quillin Lay and wife Louisa Jane Brown Lay were the parents of ten children...

..., William Quillin Lay, built a log school house on the hill a mile from their home, where three roads joined...

William Quillin and Louisa Jane Brown Lay also had thirty-four grandchildren.

COMPILER's NOTE: Compiler found a list of the men who served with the 2nd TN Vol. Inf. Reg. on a computer internet genealogy site, Sep. 1997. On that list appeared a "William P. LAY". Information given was as follows: LAY, William P: Private; H; Unk; 00; 1 Aug 1863 - 2 Mar 1864. Unk. Discharge certificate furnished by War Department 28 Apr 1891. Details of separation not clear. Unfortunately, the "00" is in the position of "Age of the soldier". There is no way to confirm whether or not this might be William Q.'s record. Compiler has no information from descendants of William Q. that he was a veteran of the Civil War. (The "Unk" used above is in the position which is used for the veteran's place of birth or residence at the time he was inducted.)

BIO: In an article written by Mary Alice LAY EARNHART, Louisa Jane's grand daughter, and copied for compiler by Eva McCARTY, Mrs. EARNHART writes the following concerning her grandmother: "...On the 14th day of December 1873 (William Quillin LAY) was Unionted in marriage to Louisa Jane BROWN in Marion County, Tennessee. BIO: Elijah is the direct-line ancestor of William J. Heinle who has provided much of the data for the Jack LAY and Mary Pauline (O'DELL) LAY families. Elijah was a twin to Elisha LAY. A photo sent by Mr. HEINLE, shows both twins in Civil War Unionforms. Elijah and his twin, Elisha, as young boys, are said to have served as messenger boys for the Unionon Army during the Civil War. Steve STAMM, another descendent of the LAY family located via the computer genealogy network, has as part of his LAY home page, a list of "LAYS WHO WENT TO WAR." Per that list, Elisha LAY was a private in the "154th TN Inf., Co. B. Senior Reg.'s" Elijah is not included in this list. Elijah and his wife, Mary PETREE, had ten children, but only six lived to adulthood. Per Eva McCARTY, "Mary explained that Tennessee was a hard place to raise children because there was so much fever..." Mrs. McCARTY goes on to tell of Elijah's migrations from Campbell County TN to Marion County, and later to ARIZONA. "Sometime in the late 1870's or early 1880's, Elijah built two barges and loaded his family and all their possessions...They made their way down the Powell River into the Clinch River to the Tennessee River and then on to Rankin's Cove where his brother, William Quillen, had a farm. Elijah was was to work for William...in the 1880s, Elijah's son, Dave left Rankin's Cove and went to AZ where Elijah's brother, "Johnny" and his wife,...'Aunt Mack'... and daughter, Jennie...settled on the lower Verde River...Elijah was never satisfied in TN after Dave left home. As soon as he could, he gathered his 1rops and sold his home ... the next year, he and his wife and five children embarked on what was called an immigrant train from Jasper, TN... They arrived in Prescott, AZ on March 22, 1892. They still had two more days of hard travel before reaching the Verde Valley where Dave had located. When they arrived, the military at Camp Verde was having trouble with the Indians. They found land to rent, but the Army would not allow them to live in their tents as they had planned, so they lived in part of the adobe building that is now the Fort Verde Museum. Elijah homesteaded in Oak Creek Canyon near present day Sedona. The family finally settled in Cornville on lower Oak Creek. He farmed and ranched with his son, Joe, until his death. Mrs. McCARTY has provided a photocopy of the obituary for Elijah LAY; the article is accompanied by copies of photographs of Elijah and Mary Ann. A copy of this page is included in this genealogy.

BIO: Eva McCARTY writes, "Elijah was the sixth or seventh child, as he was a twin...He married Mary Ann Petree, the dau. of Isaac and Martha Emaline (FORD) PETREE. Jan., 1997: Compiler had taken the liberty of entering the names of Isaac and Martha PETREE as the parents of Mary Ann using data found on the 1860 census, with an eye to comon given names, etc. After Mrs. McCARTY's letter, compiler returned to examination of census films. 1870 shows a John and Catherine PETREE residing next door to the young couple in Campbell Co. Isaac and Martha PETREE appeared two pages and 16 households later in the '70 enumeration. Both John and Isaac are enumerated as "44" years old, both born in TN. Compiler is now doubtful that she has located the parents of Mary Ann PETREE accurately...thus emphasizing the dangers of "assuming" in the work of genealogical research!!! As of 20 Jan. 1997, compiler has not located a "John and Martha PETREE" on either the 1860, 1870 or 1880 census for Campbell County, TN. "Mary" (PETREE) LAY was enumerated as 28 years of age on the 1880 census. Elijah and Mary Ann had only four children on that enumeration -- William, David, James "A.", and Sarah J. In recording the data on the children of Elijah and Mary Ann (PETREE) LAY, compiler's attention was snared upon listing the sixth child of this marriage -- "Lou Catherine." Returning to the census data collected over the years, compiler looked again at John PETREE's household to find that the wife of John PETREE, who in 1870 was enumerated as "Catherine", appeared in 1880 as "Loucathrin". The LAYs had named their first daughter Sarah, this second one "Lou Catherine" and not until the fourth daughter, did they use the name "Martha." On the other hand, they named their second son "John David" and apparently never used the name "Isaac" for one of their sons. These clues seemingly do nothing to help in answering the question of the given names of Mary Ann PETREE's parents.

(21) Elisha3 Lay, (Mary2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 9 Jul 1849 in Claiborne County, Tn, and in 1867 in Unionon County, Tn, married Eliza "Liza" SWEAT, daughter of John Quinton A. SWEAT and Mary McCarty, who was born about 1854 in Unionon County, Tn. Elisha died in 1934 in Oklahoma City (O. Eliza "Liza" died in 1876 in Campbell County, Tn.

BIO: U.S. Census for 1850 lists the twins as "Eliza,(F) and Elijah(M)." Per Mrs. McCARTY, the twins looked so much alike that most people could only tell them apart when they were standing together; Elisha was the shorter of the two. A picture sent to compiler by Wm. HEINLE showed these two very young men in what appeared to be Unionon Army Unionforms. Mrs. McCARTY explained several years later, that the boys were too young to participate in the actual fighting in the Civil War, but both served as messengers for the Federal troops. Per Ms. McCARTY, Elisha LAY died at Oklahome City, at the home of his daughter, Izora. Elisha and his first wife, "Liza" SWEAT, were both very young when they married, sometime in 1867. Their first child, born in 1868 died at birth; scarcely two years later, the second child, Mary, was born. Elisha LAY was working in INDIANA with his brother, William Quillen Lay, in the lumber business when his son, William, was born. Shortly after the birth of William, Eliza was diagnosed with TB. They immediately moved back to TENNESSEE where she died, leaving a 3 month-old son. Elisha, with three small children, met and married Martha WILLIAMSON soon after Eliza's death. Lavisa, the third of the couple's children, and little William referred to Martha as their mother. Elisha was never satisfied in one place. They lived several places in Campbell County, a while in Sequatchie Valley, TN, and back to Campbell County. In 1897, he, Martha and daughter Lavisa with her husband, Jesse Jackson ELDER left TN by train for Oklahoma. They got off the train at Weatherford, OK. Lavisa and Jackson ELDER stopped at Yukon, OK, then later moved to El Reno, where they settled down. Elisha and Martha traveled from Weatherford to Dewey County, OK by wagon. They settled on land located about 3 miles east and 2-3 miles north of Putman, OK. Mrs. McCARTY writes:

"They lived in a dugout that leaked when it rained and the snakes could crawl in. Here they lived through drought and blizzards so bad they nearly froze to death. Cattlement didn't like the Sodbusters and weren't the easiest people to neighbors along side.. They went hungry many times. Lots of quail, squirrel and rabbits ended up on their table. 'Guess that's why Elisha and his son Richard became expert marksmen. They hunted with a muzzle loaded gun when a miss meant no food. The Lays farmed and raised a few cattle, but Elisha was a carpenter and built homes in the area. Sometimes pay was vegetables, meat or a little cash. Sometimes he walked 10 to 12 miles to work. He was a faithful Mason and walked many miles to lodge meetings at night. Martha was an Eastern Star member. Martha passed away in the early 1900's...After her death the family separated -- some to return to Tennessee and others to remain in Oklahoma... Elisha spent the rest of his life traveling to Tennessee, California and Oklahoma to visit and live with his children. He never unpacked his trunk. ...He had no religion. He did not believe in God... Elisha Lay and his son-in-law Jesse Jackson Elder built a beautiful house on the John "Jack" Lay farm in Campbell County, TN on the Powell River. This is where Jesse met Lavisa Lay. After Jesse and Lavisa returned to Tennessee from Oklahoma, they lived in this home until his death. Lavisa stayed there until the TVA bought the land." EUnionce (LAY) PLUMMER's autobiography contained the following remarks about her grandfather, Elisha LAY -- "As a small girl I had bad ear aches. My grandfather Lay would get up during the night and light his old pipe and blow smoke in my ears. He was about 81 years old at this time. Then there was the skunk oil that was used on baby sister (Violet) when she had the croup. These were some old time remedies used by Grandfather LAY that really did work..."

BIO: Per Mrs. McCARTY, Eliza was born about 1854; the 1870 enumeration of the census for Unionon Co., however, shows Eliza's age as 13. This would calculate to a birth year of 1857. It should be noted, however, that there is a marked discrepancy between the age shown on the 1870 record for America SWEAT, and the very specific date of birth provided by the descendents of this family. Errors in census enumerations of this type are not uncommon. Per Mrs. McCARTY,"...Shortly after the birth of William, Eliza was diagnosed with TB. They immediately moved back..." (from INDIANA)"to TN where she died soon after returning. Elisha with three small children met and married Martha WILLIAMSON soon after Eliza's death..."

BIO:Eva McCARTY reports two stories about the death of Mary. One was that she was wading in the creek while having her monthly period. Her period stopped, and she never had another one. The doctor was not able to get her periods to start again. Then she went blackberry picking and received scratches over her arms and legs. She contracted dew poisoning which turned into blood poisoning which eventually caused her death. Mrs. McC. reports that the blood infection was so bad that the flesh rotted away from the bones on Mary's legs. The other story reported to Mrs. McCARTHY was that Mary was picking blackberries and received scratches which set up dew poisoning. The dew poisoning itself evidently became infected, causing her death. Mrs. McCARTY has a piture of Mary, and reports that she was a very pretty girl. The site of Mary's grave is unknown.

114 4 William Lay was born 16 Mar 1876 in Indiana, and married Sally LINDAMOOD, daughter of Harvey LINDAMOOD and Lydia Elizabeth Childress, who was born 16 Mar 1880 in Unionon County, Tn. William died on 25 Dec 1935 in Speedwell (Claib. Sally died about 1924 in Campbell County, Tn.
BIO: According to the family biographical information provided by Eva McCARTY, William was born while his father was working for his brother in INDIANA. Shortly after his birth, William's mother was diagnosed with T.B.; she died soon after Elisha moved her back to TN. Elisha then married Martha WILLIAMSON, who William and his sister, Lavisa, accepted as their mother. Per Mrs. McCARTY, William's and Sally's fourteen children were: Oscar M., Terley, Curtis, Fred, Dennis, Milas, Taylor, Jesse, Wanda, Lou, Harriett, Lola, Gertrude, and Mable. No other data was given. William and Sally stayed in Tennessee and had fourteen children. When they had their first child, a midwife and a doctor were with Sally. Apparently William watched the proceedings, as he was the one who delivered all the rest of their children. There was never a doctor or a midwife for the last thirteen.

He also married on 4 Mar 1877 in Campbell County, Tn, Martha Williamson, daughter of * Unknown and Nancy Williamson, who was born 3 Jul 1854 in Campbell County, Tn. Martha died on 24 Aug 1902 in Putman (Dewey) O.K

BIO: Elisha married Martha shortly after Eliza, his first wife, died. Martha, at the time was working for his brother, David. Martha never knew who her father was. She was illegitimate. Martha's mother, Nancy, who lived with Elisha and Martha, was known by the family as "Granny." Eva McCARTY writes that her mother remembered "Granny" telling how her father would not allow her to marry Martha's father. She would not tell who he was and thinking to spite her father, she had two more children by him. As far as anyone knows she never told her children who their father was. In 1897, Martha and Elisha traveled by train to Dewey County, OK, with Elisha's daughter, Lavisa and son-in-law, Jesse Jackson ELDER. The ELDERs' daughters, Mossie Lee and Harriett Manerva, and their children were with them. Izora, the baby, cried all the first night. Arriving at Weatherford, OK, they then took a wagon on to Dewey County, where they settled on land 3 miles east of and two or three miles north of Putman. There, according to Mrs. McCARTY'S grandmother, the hard times began and then stayed with them until Martha died. The dugout where the family made their home leaked when it rained and snakes creeped into the house. Elisha farmed and raised a few cattle, but he was a carpenter by trade, and farming was not his forte'. Later, Elisha helped to build several homes in the area, but he never was able to construct one for his own family. Martha never liked OKLAHOMA, and had a fear of having to die inside the dugout. One day when she was doing the washing, she called for her son, James Lewis to throw out a big tub of water for her. When "Jim" did not immediately come to do as his mother asked, Martha emptied the water herself. In the process of lifting the heavy tub, she injured herself internally, causing internal bleeding. Apparently the bleeding continued for several weeks untreated, and was ultimately the cause of her death. In her last hours, Martha insisted that she be removed from the dugout, so her son, David Richard, helped to carry her outside. She was placed under the shade of a tree where she lay until she died. David Richard reported that to be the longest, saddest day of his life. After Martha's death, the family would take her baby, Izora, to the cotton fields while they picked cotton. Placing the baby on some cotton sacks, they would pull her along with them as they worked their way down the rows of cotton, and Izora would cry for her mother. As soon as the family earned enough money to pay their passage back to TN, they separated -- some staying in OK, others returning to TN as Martha had wanted so badly to do. Elisha returned to TN, but in later years, he went back to OK and stayed for a while, first with one child, then with another until his death.

(22) John "Johnny" D.3 Lay, (Mary2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born about 1852 in Tennessee, and on 1 Oct 1871 in Campbell County, Tn, married America Brown, daughter of James R. Brown and Sarah Alder. John "Johnny" D. died on 25 Dec 1924 in Oak Creek

BIO: William J. HEINLE provided the first data on the Mary Pauline (O'DELL) and "Jack" LAY family in TN. Per Mr. HEINLE's family group sheets, this son of the couple was named "John David". His brother was called "David" LAY. In data sent to compiler in 1996 by Eva McCARTY, there was no middle name or initial provided for "John", however, Ms. McCARTY did add "Johnny" to the name--apparently used as a nickname. Examining the 1860 census for Campbell Co., TN, compiler was unable to decipher the name of this male child in the LAY household. There appeared to be a "D" at the beginning, but this also could have been a capital "J." The name appeared to end with "y"; compiler recorded "Douny?/Donny?/Drury?". The age of this child would calculate to about 1851; later examination of the LAY's family group indicated that "John" was born closest to this date. The name which was unreadable on the microfilm may have been "Jonny",but compiler has elected to record this child's name as "John D." until further confirmation of his middle name is located. The household just preceding the LAYs' on the 1860 census, was that of "S.W. and Elizabeth BROWN." Compiler did not list the children in this household, but these may have been the parents of America BROWN, later the wife of "Johnny" LAY. Per Ms. McCARTY, John D. LAY, II died in Brown Springs, AZ, and is buried near Sedona, AZ. In her biographical information on this family, she writes, "...His first wife was America BROWN (Aunt Mack). They had one child, Jennie, who died in Prescott, AZ in her early twenties. His second wife was Jesse FENSTERMAKER DUNCAN, Johnny and America are both buried at the Schuerman Ranch near Sedonna, AZ." Compiler was unable to find this couple on the 1880 census in Campbell or Unionon Countyies in TN. This may indicate that they had already migrated to ARIZONA by June, 1880.

Rhoda C. died on 16 Jan 1916 in Fountain City (K. Charles Henderson died on 19 Feb 1924 in Fountain City

BIO: Although neither Mr. HEINLE nor Mrs. McCARTY gives a middle name for Rhoda, one of them recorded her name as "Rhoda C." On the 1870 census, Rhoda appears as "Kate" in her mother's household. She was enumerated as "Roda C." in her husband's household in 1880. It seems likely that her middle name may have been Catherine. Mrs. McCarty writes, "Rhoda is the tenth child of John Jack and Mary Pauline...She married Charles Henderson WELLS ...After the scandle about her sister, Mary, Rhoda and Charles left Campbell Co., and apparently no one knew where they went...Through a desc. of Charles WELLS,...that Rhoda and Charles moved to Fountain City, (Knox County TN). Charles was enumerated as "24" years of age; his occupation at that time was "Laborer." He and "Roda C." have two children, James, 2 and William 8 months of age. Also enumerated in the household, is Charles's sister-in-law, Mary LAY, 25 years of age. Per biographical notes provided to compiler by Eva McCARTY, Charles and Mary, who had a severe spinal deformity (the result of a childhood injury) produced a child. Mary and the child both died, but because of the ensuing scandal, Rhoda and Charles moved away from Campbell County, where Rhoda and Mary were born and raised.

BIO: In her interview with Eva McCARTY, Dolly McELORY reported that Henderson L. NELSON had married (??) "PETERY". Mrs. McCARTY corrected this surname to PETREE, a name frequently enCountyered in this eastern TENNESSEE area, and one familiar to Mrs. McCARTY from her own lineage. No other specific data was given about the wife of Henderson NELSON, but there was a statement written in Mrs. McCARTY's summary of the interview that "Both buried in Victory Baptist Church Cemetery." Compiler was unsure whether this statement referred to Henderson and his wife or to their two sons whose dates of death were included in the summary. The photocopy of the page from the 1900 census enumeration included Henderson NELSON and wife, "Edie C." This source also gave the month and year of Edie's birth and the fact that she was born in TN. Only one of the couple's two sons, James, 17 years of age, was enumerated in the household on that census.

132 2 William Henderson Nelson was born 25 Feb 1886. William Henderson died on 29 Apr 1945.
BIO: Compiler was not certain whether this child of Henderson L. NELSON was buried at Victory Baptist Church Cemetery or not. In her summary from the interview with Mrs. McELORY, Eva McCARTY had written under the data on this family "both buried at Victory Baptist Church Cem." Compiler believes this statement was in reference to Henderson L. and his wife, but it may have referred to his two sons, whose dates of death were included in the data. The Laurel County, KY Historical Society's quarterly, "BRANCHES OF LAUREL," in Feb. 1997, included some Laurel County marriages. One on the list was for Willie H. NELSON to Ida Mae TANKERSLEY, "1/03/1911." William would have been about the right age to be marrying at this time, and many people from Claiborne County, TN migrated to Laurel County. It is possible that this is William Henderson's marriage, but there has been no confirmation. The index lists no data except the names of the bride and groom and the date of marriage (or in some cases, the date the application was filed.)

BIO: Per the 1900 census, "May F." NELSON" (Mary Frances BRANTLEY) was born in Sept. 1861. She had, by 1900, given birth to six children, only 5 of whom were still living at the time of the census enumeration. She and her mother were born in TN; Mary Frances' father was born in NC. Comparing the data given on this census record with that given by Mrs. McELORY to Eva McCARTY, it can be inferred that John R., the couple's oldest son, was the one child who did not survive until the 1900 enumeration when Mary F. reported that only five of her children were still living. There were only four children reported on this census, however, so there must have been one of Mary F.'s children who had already married and left the home, or who was visiting in another household on the day of the enumeration. Whether that child would have been Eliza Ann or Gilbert is not known, since Mrs. McELORY did not supply dates of birth for either of those two children. Apparently Mary F. gave birth to one more child after the census enumeration of 1900, since Mrs. McELORY named seven children in this family. Also, Mrs. McE. reported the children in a different order of birth than that found on the census report. Nancy E. was reported on the census to have been born in 1886 rather than 1896; William J. was listed as 10 years old in 1900, his birth date given as "May 1890." James Amos was the youngest child in the household at one year.

BIO: In her interview with Eva McCARTY, Dolly NELSON McELORY provided only the given name of this child of Narvil Henderson NELSON. His name did not appear on the 1900 census, so it is likely that he was born after that date. Mary Frances (BRANTLY) NELSON, however, reported on that census that she had given birth to six children, and that only 5 were still living. There are only four children enumerated in 1900. John R. died in 1896, but the fifth child must have been married before this census or at least was visiting elsewhere at the time of the enumeration. It is unknown whether that missing child was Liza Ann or Gilbert.

139 7 Liza Ann Nelson
BIO: In her interview with Mrs. Mc CARTY, Dolly NELSON McELORY provided only the given and middle name for this daughter of N.H. NELSON. Liza Ann did not appear in the household on the 1900 census record. Her mother, Mary Frances, reported that she had given birth to six children, but only 5 were still alive. Yet there were only 4 children in the household per the enumeration. It is likely that either Liza Ann or Gilbert was older than Nancy E., and that either that child was already married and out of the home by 1900 or, at least, that one of the two was visiting elsewhere when the enumerator was in the home. This would also indicate that the other of the two was not born until after the 1900 census enumeration.

(37) James M. (s/o E.Jordan)3 O'Dell, (Elisha2, Bartlett1) was born in Laurel County, Ky, and about 1881 in IL (?), married Grace A. (O'DELL) who was born about 1864 in Indiana.

BIO: On the microfilm of births, deaths, and marriages from 1852-1900 in Laurel County, KY, compiler found a birth entry for "MM O'DELL" to parents, E. Jordan and Hannah (WILLIAMS), for 02 Sept. 1856. From the age given for James M. on the 1860 census (3 years), compiler assumed this was the record of his birth. No other child in the family would have fit the date. Discovery of this family in Mercer County, IL in 1900 and 1910 has given evidence that compiler's assumption was incorrect. On the 1900 census, James O'DELL was reported to be 41 years of age; his birth date was reported as "Aug 1858." If the Laurel County birth record was his, then the year date of birth was recorded incorrectly or compiler misread it. On the 1900 census record, however, Hannah O'DELL reported that she and Elisha J. had been married 52 years. She also stated that she had given birth to 11 children, and that only 7?/8? of them were still living in 1900. (The numeral was smudged on the census film; compiler was not sure if it was intended to read "7" or "8" surviving children.) The "M.M." born in 1853 could have been one of the children who did not survive. Grace A., the wife of James M. O'DELL was born in IN. She reported that both of her parents were born in DELAWARE. Grace reported that she and James had been married 19 years in 1900, and that she had given birth to 7 children, but only 3 of them were still living at the time of the enumeration. Of the three children listed on that census, both of the girls were reported to have been born in IL; the middle child, Leonard R.'s place of birth was difficult to read. It was probably "Illinois", but could have been "Indiana." James gave some kind of "dealer" as his occupation in 1900, but the first word could not be read. In 1910, his occupation was given as "Farmer." The couple reported their home to be "owned, free" in 1900; compiler failed to copy ownership status on the 1910 census record. In 1900, there was a sixth person enumerated in the O'DELL household. The surname could not be read, but the given name was "Fredrick", a 20-year-old boarder from GERMANY whose occupation was "butcher."

BIO: Grace, wife of James M. O'DELL, reported that she had given birth to seven children, but only 3 were still living in 1900. On the 1910 census, only one child was enumerated in the household. In 1900, however, Arizona, the oldest daughter was 18 and Leonard, the son, was 13, so both could have been married and away from home by the next census enumeration. Although Grace did report a month of birth for herself in 1900, compiler could not read it. She further reported that both of her parents were born in DELAWARE. She and James had been married 19 years in 1900; 29 in 1910.

141 2 Leonard R. O'Dell was born in Jan 1887 in IL?/IN?.
BIO: Leonard was enumerated in his parents' household in 1900 as 13 years of age. His place of birth was unclear. Compiler thinks it was probably "Illinois", but it did have some resemblance to "Indiana." Since his mother was born in IN, it would not be unlikely that one or more of the children might have been born there, too. Leonard did not appear in his parents' household on the 1910 census, and compiler did not find him as head of his own household in that County.

BIO: Iva B. was the only one of the three children who appeared in her parents' household in 1900 who was still there in 1910. Per the 1900 record, Iva was 4 years of age, and 14 on the later census.

(38) John3 O'Dell, (Elisha2, Bartlett1) was born in Oct 1860 in Laurel County, Ky, and about 1884 in IL (?), married Eva (O'DELL) who was born in Sep 1866 in Illinois.
BIO: Compiler has made the assumption that this individual was one of the 11 children born to Hannah (WILLIAMS) and Elisha Jordan O'DELL which Hannah reported on the 1900 census. Although there has been no actual documentation found to prove this relationship, John, 39 years of age, was enumerated as head of his own household in "Aleda City", Mercer County, in June, 1900. John was reported to have been born in KY, both of his parents in TN. The only other O'DELLs who would have fit this pattern in Mercer County in the same year were Elisha J. and Hannah or Nathaniel O'DELL, whose first wife, Hannah (LICKLITER), was also born in TN. Nathaniel, however, would only have been about 11 years old when John was born. Although compiler did not find John in the E.J. O'DELL household as a child, the last census record found on this family before 1900 was enumerated in July, 1860, a few months before John's birth. Compiler was unable to find this family in Laurel County, KY in 1870. On the 1900 record, John is reported to be 39 years of age; married to Eva for 16 years. The couple had one child, and Eva reported that she had only given birth to one child. John's occupation in 1900 was recorded as "carpenter." Compiler did not find this family on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL.

BIO: Per the data appearing on the 1900 census, Eva was born in Illinois; both of her parents were born in MAINE. She and John O'DELL had been married for 16 years; she had given birth to one child, and he was in the home at the time of enumeration. Eva was reported as unable to read, but she could write. The O'DELLs were renting their home in Aleda City at the time of the census enumeration. Compiler was unable to find them on the 1910 census.

(39) Joseph H.3 O'Dell, (Elisha2, Bartlett1) was born about 1869 in KENTUCKY (Laurel, and in ILLINOIS (Mercer, married Emily (O'DELL) who was born about 1870 in Illinois.

BIO: Compiler has "bent the rules" of reliable research in placing this individual in the family group of Elisha Jordan and Hannah O'DELL. There is no documentation to support this assignment of parents. Joseph H. O'DELL appears on the 1910 census for Mercer County, IL. He gives his place of birth as KY. His age, on the microfilm, is smudged, but it could be either "41" or "47." This could be the son of either Elisha Jordan O'DELL or of Elisha's son, Nathaniel O'DELL. Hannah (WILLIAMS) O'DELL reported in 1900 that she had given birth to 11 children, but not all of them had survived. Nathaniel, her first child, was married in 1868 when he was only about 20 years of age. On the 1860 census, Hannah was 25 years of age. She could have easily been young enough to have had Joseph in 1869. Hannah (LICKLITER), Nathaniel's wife was reported to be 31 years old at the time of her marriage to Nathaniel, her second husband. She, too, could have been the mother of Joseph. In 1910, Mercer County, IL, Joseph H. is shown as the head of his own household in Perryton Township. His wife, Emily, is listed as 40 years of age, born in IL. A 16-year-old son, Glenn, was also born in IL. Under the marital status question, Emily is classifed as married 20 years; Joseph's classification is a bit confusing. It reads "2M, 20 years." Compiler was not clear as to the meaning of the "2 M"--it could mean that Joseph was married twice, or it could mean that Joseph was the second husband of Emily. Although Emily says she was born in IL and Joseph was born in KY, Glenn's "place of birth of father" reads "IL", "place of birth of mother" reads "KY." Compiler assumes this was simply an error on the part of the enumerator in switching the places of birth. Also in Perryton Township, compiler found, in the household of William F. MANNING, a "Susie F. O'DELL, 17, 'Servant', b. IL." Susie's father was born in KY, her mother in IL. Compiler suspects this is a daughter of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Susie's marital status was "Single." It would have been helpful if compiler could have compared 1900 and 1910 census records for Nathaniel's household and Joseph's household. This might have provided answers to some of the questions concerning Joseph's parentage. Unfortunately, compiler did not find Joseph in Mercer County in 1900; although Nathaniel did appear on the 1900 census in the County, his wife was listed as "Eliza O'DELL" and the couple reported that they had been married "0" years. Hannah (LICKLITER) O'DELL's responses to the number of children she had had might have given some clue to whether she was the mother of Joseph O'DELL. Evidently, Hannah had died before 1900 or she and Nathaniel were divorced, and Nathaniel had remarried by that time. Since it is not known when Elisha Jordan and Nathaniel O'DELL left Laurel County, KY, the County of Joseph's birth is uncertain, as well. Compiler did not find either of the two men on the Laurel County census records for 1870, but some church records indicated that E.J. had been in the County later than 1860. Whether the family resided somewhere other than Laurel County before going on to IL is not known.

BIO: Compiler has no data on the marriage of Emily to Joseph H. O'DELL, except for that taken from the 1900 census record for Mercer County, IL. Per that enumeration, Emily was 40 years of age; she reported that she was born in IL. Her mother was born in MICHIGAN and her father's place of birth was given as "Ohio River." Emily states that she and Joseph H. O'DELL have been married 20 years in 1910. Their son, Glenn, was 16, also born in IL. In another household in Perryton Township, Mercer County, a 17-year-old "Susie F. O'DELL" was enumerated as a servant in the household of William F. MANNING. Compiler strongly suspects that Susie is a daughter of Emily and Joseph O'DELL, based on her age, place of birth and the birth places of her parents. ("IL, KY, IL")

Children:
144 1 Susie F.4 O'Dell was born about 1893 in Illinois.
BIO: There is no confirmation that Susie F. O'DELL is the child of Joseph H. and Emily O'DELL. Compiler has presumed this relationship based on data from the 1910 census. The O'DELLs are enumerated in the same township in Mercer County, IL as the employer of Susie O'DELL. The O'DELLs had been married 20 years at the time of that enumeration. Joseph H. O'DELL was born in KY; his wife, Emily, was born in IL. The O'DELLs listed a son, Glenn, born a year after the calculated year of birth of Susie O'DELL. Susie F. O'DELL is enumerated as "servant" in the household of William F. MANNING in 1910. Her age is given as 17; her place of birth as IL. Susie reported that her mother was born in IL, her father in KY. Since there were no other O'DELLs found on this enumeration which fit these specifications, compiler has deduced that Susie was the daughter of Joseph and Emily.

(40) Eliza M.3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born about 1853 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 29 Feb 1872 in Unionon County, Tn, married Harvey Williamson.

BIO: Eliza ELLISON is shown as 17 years of age on the Unionon County, TN census for 1870. Birthdate has been calculated from this record. This daughter of Henry and Mahala (O'DELL) ELLISON has been listed in some sources as "Eliza (Elizabeth) ELLISON." Per the BRUBAKERs' collection of sources, she was listed on the 1860 census as "Eliza M." Her younger sister was "Elizabeth P.", so it is likely that some researchers have assumed the two girls were one individual. The BRUBAKERs have provided the date and place of Eliza's marriage to Harvey WILLIAMSON.

Ellison was Trustee of Campbell Co. 1902-1910)." Compiler could find no reference to the identity of "G.W. ELLISON"; it is assumed he was a descendent of Henry or one of his siblings. Compiler found the graves of William Marshall and Catherine (AUSMUS) ELLISON in the Ellison Cemetery just east of the Campbell County line, at the end of Ellison Lane, North side of Hwy. 63 near Speedwell, TN. Wm.'s tombstone gives both his date of birth and his date of death as recorded on the data sheet above, however, the one-page ELLISON family tree gives "b. 1855; d. Aug. 21, 1935." The census enumeration for 1870 in Unionon Co. lists his age as "14," which would calculate to a year of birth as "1856." The 1880 census for Unionon County, TN shows "William M." still living in his father's home at 25 years of age. His occupation was given as "Farmer."

149 1 Bessie Lucretia4 Ellison was born 11 Oct 1890 in Claiborne County, Tn, and married Frank Alexander. Bessie Lucretia died on 3 May 1968 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: The WILSON reference below shows the name of this daughter of "Marsh" ELLISON as "Bessie Lucretia" or "Bessie Inorotia". The photocopy is very blurred, and compiler is uncertain of the middle name. This source also give Bessie's husband as "B. Frank ALEXANDER."

150 2 Myrtle Viola Ellison was born 23 Jun 1895 in Claiborne County, Tn, and married (Unk) Shoun.
BIO: The two main sources of information on the "Marsh" ELLISON family give conflicting data concerning Myrtle V. ELLISON. Lawrence and Joy EDWARDS report Myrtle as marrying only once, and that to "Earl Hobson SMITH." WILSON, who gives credit for his data to W. Marshall ELLISON ("Marsh"), states that "Myrtle Viola" married 1st to ____SHOUN, then a second marriage was to "P. Hop SMITH." These same two sources differ on such things as "Marsh" ELLISON's date of birth -- EDWARDS, very specifically reports that Marsh was born 23 Dec. 1854; WILSON gives only "1855" as the birth date.

+ 151 3 Charles Dewey Ellison was born on 27 Oct 1898.

(42) Sarah Cumi/Cumae3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 20 Feb 1857 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 1 Apr 1893 in Claiborne County, Tn, married James Edwards, son of Spencer Edwards and Katherine "Katy" Riddle, who was born about 1834 in Claiborne County, Tn. James died on 14 Aug 1912.

BIO: This daughter of Henry ELLISON's is shown in the WILSON reference as "Cumi"; in the Old Speedwell reference she appears as "Cumae"; in the transcription from the 1870 Unionon County census, her name is listed as "Sariah." On that census, her age is given as "13" which would calculate to a birth year of 1857 -- in agreement with the Old Speedwell birth date. The 1880 census shows "Sarah C., 23" still living in her parents' household, 17 June 1880.

BIO: The "Old Speedwell" book gives James birthdate as 1834 and provides the names of two wives. It lists eight children, six by the first wife, two by the second. His death is recorded as 14 JUL 1912, but no dates are given for his marriages. The 1850 census shows a James EDWARDS in the home of Artemicia EDWARDS, widow of Spencer and probably James' step-mother. Calculation af his age in October 1850 would result in an approximate birthdate of 1832. James was enumerated as 26 years of age on 01 June 1860; this again calculates to an 1834 year of birth; and again in 1870, his "36" years would support the later year of birth. Then in 1880, his age is given as "47" as of 03 June, 1880. From the enumeration of the 1860 census which was dated 01 June, compiler has calculated that James married Lucinda HUNTER about 1855. By the time of that enumeration, the couple had two children, ages 3 and 1 years respectively. If, as Lawrence EDWARDS recorded, James married Cumae ELLISON, this marriage would have taken place sometime after June, 1880, because Lucinda is probably the wife listed with him on that census. The name is spelled "Lewenda" and her age is given as "49", but it certainly is not "Cumae", who was only 23 at that time, and was enumerated in the househole of her father, Henry ELLISON.

(43) Benjamin Wiley3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 6 Apr 1859 in Claiborne County, Tn, and on 15 Apr 1877 in Unionon County, Tn, married Mary Maria KIVETTE who was born 22 Feb 1860 in Claiborne County, Tn. Benjamin Wiley died on 27 Jul 1944 in Claiborne County, Tn. Mary Maria died on 5 May 1932 in Claiborne County, Tn.
Mary Maria could have been a sister to Havey J. Kivett who married Minerva J. Rogers born Sep. 4 1841 in Claiborne County.

BIO: Per the WILSON reference, Benjamin Wiley ELLISON resided at some time in "Carlbeton" (Carrolton ?) TEXAS. Search of U.S. Census Records for 1860, 1870 and 1880 shows Benjamin as being one year of age in 1860 and 11 in 1870. He was gone from his parents' household by 1880, but appeared in the 12th Civil District of Unionon County as head of his own household. Benjamin was 21; "Mary M." was 20. The couple had a two-year-old son, William C. and a four-month-old baby, LeRoy. Compiler failed to note Benjamin's occupation, if it was noted on the film.

157 4 Georgie Ellison died about 1907.
158 5 William C. "Chess" Ellison was born about 1878 in Unionon County, Tn. William C. "Chess" died about 1911.
BIO: The EDWARDS' revised book about the families of Speedwell, TN, lists the fifth child of Benjamin W. and Mary M. ELLISON as "Chess." No data is provided in this source, other than a date of death, 1911. Compiler found Benjamin and Mary M. on the 1880 census for Unionon County, TN. The young couple had two child - 2-year-old William C. and four-month- old LeRoy. Since the EDWARDS did not include another William in their list of children born to this couple, and since young William's middle initial on the 1880 census was "C.", compiler has made the assumption that these are the same child, probably better known by his nickname, "Chess." There is no indication of a marriage in the EDWARDS' book.

165 12 Tina Jewell Ellison was born 10 Apr 1901 in Claiborne County, Tn, and married John Harvey who was born 29 Dec 1896 in Claiborne County, Tn.

(44) Abraham Lincoln3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 30 Aug 1861 in Claiborne County, Tn, and about 1882 in Claiborne County, Tn, married Rachel Edwards, daughter of Sampson Edwards and Malinda Ausmus, who was born 6 Jun 1864 in Claiborne County, Tn. Abraham Lincoln died on 23 Apr 1947 in Claiborne County, Tn. Rachel died on 3 Feb 1928 in Claiborne County, TN (?).

BIO: The 1870 Census for Unionon County, TN shows this son of Henry ELLISON as "Henry L., 8, M, W, TN", but both the unpublished family tree and the Old Speedwell reference show him as "Abraham L." or Abraham Lincoln ELLISON." Since his age on the 1870 census record calculates to a year of birth of about 1862, compiler has assumed this is the same child as "Abraham L." whose birthdate is reported in the Old Speedwell book as 30 August 1861. In 1880, Abraham L. is shown as 18 years old, "working on farm."

BIO: Rachel is shown as 6 years of age in her parents' home on the 1870 census. She was 18 on the 1880 census of Claiborne County. Lawrence EDWARDS' "OLD SPEEDWELL FAMILIES" shows a specific birth and death date for this child of Sampson's. The book also reports Rachel's marriage to A.L. ELLISON. Data appearing on the USgendex Web Site, submitted by Mark ASHBELL, gives none of the children of Samson and Malinda (AUSMUS) EDWARDS.

(45) Berry (s/o Henry)3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 19 Sep 1863 in Claiborne County, Tn, and about 1885 in Claiborne County, TN (?), married Adeline Edwards, daughter of Sampson Edwards and Malinda Ausmus, who was born about 1865 in Claiborne County, Tn. Berry (s/o Henry) died on 25 Jul 1951 in Claiborne County, Tn.
BIO: Per the WILSON reference below, Berry ELLISON resided at some time in San Francisco, CA. Lawrence EDWARDS, in his first book about the Speedwell Families, cites Berry's date of birth as 19 September 1863. The 1870 Census reports Berry as "6"; the 1880 enumeration states he is 16. Not date of this marriage has been located.

BIO: Lawrence EDWARDS does not give a birth date for Adeline EDWARDS, daughter of Sampson, in his books about the Speedwell Families. Her age on the 1870 census is "5"; on the 1880 census it is "15", leading compiler to calculate her year of birth at about 1865. The date of her marriage is not cited, and compiler has not tried to calculate it, because the years of birth for her children differs greatly between the EDWARDS' first two books. In the first one, Ettie is reported to have been born in 1885; in the second book, there does not seem to be a year of birth for Ettie, but Floy is said to have been born in 1893, versus 1886 in the first book.

He also married about 1896, Anna Christina Edwards, daughter of Sampson Edwards and Malinda Ausmus, who was born 8 Jan 1877 in Claiborne County, Tn. Anna Christina died on 12 May 1939.

BIO: Anna Christina was probably named for her maternal grandmother, who was enumerated in the household of Sampson and Malinda EDWARDS in 1870. The grandmother was 67 years old at that time, and was evidently a widow. "Ana C." was listed as 4 years of age on the 1880 census.

(46) Elizabeth Paradine3 Ellison, (Elizabeth2 O'Dell, Bartlett1) was born 17 Jun 1865 in Unionon County, Tn, and on 24 Dec 1884 in Unionon County, Tn, married Andrew Cuman "Cum" Braden, son of John Braden and Rispy Lynch, who was born 23 Apr 1860 in Unionon County, Tn.
BIO:
Compiler has encountered considerable confusion regarding this daughter of Henry and Mahala Elizabeth (O'DELL) ELLISON. The first data on this child was found in Joy EDWARDS DAVIS's "Old Speedwell Families, Revised and Updated." Here the girl is listed as "Paradine"; the notation included is that "Paradin md Cum Braden." Marshall WILSON, in "Families of Norris Reservoir Area," takes this a step further when he writes, "7. Paradin - m. Cum Braden; res. Nebraska." Compiler found this child on the 1860 census as "Pauline." An older daughter of the ELLISON's, Eliza, b about 1853, was also referred to in some sources as "Elizabeth". Lawrence EDWARDS and his sister listed this daughter as "Eliza (Elizabeth) ELLISON." Compiler at first listed her with both names. Then in extracting data from the U.S. Census for 1880, it was discovered that "Eliza" had disappeared from the household, but there was a 15-year-old "Elizabeth P." where "Pauline" (age 5) had been in 1870! Neither census record showed a "Paradine" in this household. Compiler suspects strongly that the name of the ELLISON's oldest daughter should read "Eliza" and the younger child should be listed as "Elizabeth Pauline" rather than "Paradine." There has been no confirmation of this theory as of June, 1997, however. In an attempt to confirm the names of the two individuals, compiler contacted Denny and Marla BRUBAKER, 10 June 1997. Their response to this query was that Eliza appeared as "Eliza M." on the 1860 census and the data added to their data base re Elizabeth P. was that their three sources (which included the GRUBBs) list the marriage "Elizabeth Paradine (Pauline) m. Andre Cum BRADEN, 12-24-1884. (Until this message from the BRUBAKERs, compiler did not have the full name of the groom nor the date of this marriage.)
