Much if not all the
research in this project is that of Dale Standifer of Bakersfield,
California. He has also researched
James Standifer from the Mulberry Gap section of Hancock County and that
research can be found HERE. This James Stadifer’s son Stephen’s wife’s
tombstone in the Irish Memorial gardens reads the following:
"MARGARET STANDIFER, BORN MARCH 12, 1840, DIED MARCH 29, 1905. CARRYING OUT HER WILL AS WELL AS THAT OF HER HUSBAND. MRS. STANDIFER GAVE PRACTICALLY ALL THEIR PROPERTY TO THE BATIST CURCH OF TAZEWELL AND TO TAZEWELL COLLEGE. HENCE HER MEMORY WILL EVER E SWEET IN THE MINDS AND HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE OF TAZEWELL." Margaret and her husband died 5 days apart.
Hancock County Tennessee and It's People - 1989
William Standifer's parents could have been William Standifer who married
Jemina Jones on June 24, 1779, in Henry County, Virginia. More probably is John
Standifer who appears in the Orange County, North Carolina census in 1800.
John's family consisted of 1 male under 10 years (Samuel?), 1 male 10-15 years
(William?), 1 male 16-18 years (Elisha?), and 1 male 26-45 years (John?), 3
females 16-18 years, 2 females 19-25 years, and 1 female 25-45 years (John's
wife?).
William and Mary Ann "Stanifer" were both members of the Mulberry Gap
Church in Hancock County, Tennessee, as were also William and Mary
"Polly" Gilbert Standeford. The "Standeford" spelling was
used by Mary Gilbert's mother, Nancy Anne Cheek Gilbert, in her will, where she
lists Mary's children as Nancy, Susan, and Rosanna in 1828 (the will shows that
Mary "Polly" is nor alive in 1828). Mary's father was Joseph Hiram
Gilbert who married the widow Cheek on May 8, 1784 in Shenandoah County,
Virginia. Virginia deed records show that William and Mary "Polly" (b.
1788 in Virginia) were married before 1811.
He Ever Stands by Ruby Ledbetter
Bible records of William (1757-1826) and Jemina Jones (1761-1838) Standefer of
Henry County, Virginia show their son William, date of birth as May 19, 1788
and date of death as August 8, 1850. The bible copy date is 1917 and may,
therefore, have been recorded in, in the late 1800's and be hopefully more
accurate than one printed fifty years later with dates being recorded later by
descendants.
"I believe Samuel settled in Lee County,
Virginia along with William. They are seen living on adjoining farms in 1820
and 1830 in Lee County, Virginia. The others seemed to migrate to Tennessee,
Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Oregon."
William is shown in Lee County, Virginia in 1820, 1830 and 1840 and he was a
property owner. He was married about 1809 to Mary Polly Gilbert, 3rd child of
Joseph Hirman and Nancy Anne (Cheek) Gilbert. There is an interesting note
about Mary Polly Standifer -- Her father willed her "one mare" at his
death in 1804. In 1809 she was taxed for one mare, though she was not the head
of a household. Her widowed mother, Nancy, had been taxed for four horses
between 1806 and 1808. In 1809 Nancy was taxed for three horses and Mary for
one. William Standifer had no horses in 1809 and in 1810 he was taxed for one
horse -- He and Mary were married in 1809 and he is shown as owning a horse in
1810 -- at least they still had the mare! William was in Lee County Virginia
prior to 1811 as he had land tradings documented in 1811, 1820, 1823, 1831,
1837 and 1845. William is not listed in his father's will -- it is said he was
supposedly given his share of the estate before his father's death or perhaps
they were estranged. William was listed in the will of 1826 for Nancy (Cheek) Gilbert,
Mary Polly's mother. William "Standerford" and Nancy's three
daughters were mentioned in this will -- Mary Polly was not, which would lead
one to believe Mary Polly Standifer had passed before her mother.
After Mary Polly's death, about 1826, William married Mary Anne
"Polly" Frost and they had six children. They are shown on the 1850
Census living in Hancock County, Tennessee where they had moved to in or about
1847. William and Mary Anne were members of the Mulberry Gap Baptist Church.
They are shown in the 1860 Census to still be there -- It is interesting to
note that William also changed the spelling of his last name to
"Stanifer" on the 1860 Census, which fits the time frame when his
son, William Wilson, and his children changed their last name spelling,
dropping the second "d".
One of the children of William and Mary Frost Standifer was Job born in
1842 in Lee Co., VA and died 1890. He
married July 16, 1866 in Claiborne County to widow of Wiley Dunsmore, Amanda
Stone. Amanda was the daughter of Reuben Floyd and Fetna Hurst Stone. They had one daughter:
Nelly
STANDIFER (Job C. STANDIFER1) was born SEP 1879 in Texas,
USA. She married Samuel
T. BREEDING ABT. 1898, son of Samuel BREEDING and Sarah EVANS. He was
born JUN 1876 in Tennessee, USA.
The Fading Warriors
This concluded that the two William's were one and the same. Wife Mary
"Polly" Gilbert being the first wife and Mary Ann "Polly"
being the second wife.
William Standifer is buried at the Mulberry Gap Church in Hancock County,
Tennessee. He appears in the 1850 Hancock, Tennessee census as Stanifer born in
North Carolina and in the 1860 Hancock, Tennessee census as born in Virginia.
The family moved from Lee County, Virginia after their son, Reuben's birth and
lived in Snake Hollow, near the Hancock and Claiborne County line in Tennessee.
Williams Standifer's family moved from Lee Co., Va after Reuben's birth and
lived in Snake Hollow, near the Hancock and Claiborne Co., lines.

County Quarterlies, Books & Newspaper Articles Standifer. The name Standifer is English* for dweller by a rocky ford. There seems to be many different spellings of this name: Sandefer, Sandeford, Sanderfer, Sandifer, Sandiford, Standeford, Standford, Stanfor and Staniford. The spelling used in this article are as they appeared in Census, Marriage and other records. My connection to the Standifers of Hancock County, TN is thru my father Will S. Stapleton (b. 4 July 1904 in Claiborne Co., TN) whose mother was Laura Elizabeth "Standifer" (b. 7 Feb 1877 in Lee Co., VA and d. 7 Feb 1908, buried in Payne Cem behind Cedar Flat Church in Claiborne Co., TN). Her parents were Reuben Standifer (b. 5 Nov 1845 or 1848 in Lee Co., VA-now Wise Co., VA and d. 31 Oct 1933 and is buried in Spadling Cem two miles from Hwy 33 on Snake Hollow Rd. in Claiborn Co., TN) and Roseana J. Short (b. 1850 in Lee Co., VA, daughter of J. T. and N. Short and died ca 1880 and is buried in Standifer Cem in Wise Co., VA). Will's father was Isaac Floyd Stapleton (b. 8 Feb 1878 in Lee Co., VA, son of James and Ursula Roberts Stapleton Ratliff and d.11 Apr 1966, buried in Oak Grove Cem at Oak Grove Church in Claiborne Co., TN). Reuben was living in Howard's Quarter, Claiborne Co, TN when the Civil War started. Several of the Standifers joined the 63rd TN Vol Inf (Conf), but Reuben and his older brother joined "B" Co 1st TN LT ART BE (Fed) in 1864. Pvt Reuben "Stnaford" (Rubin Staniford) and Pvt Job "Standerford" served at Cumberland Gap from 1864 until they were discharged at Nashville, TN in 1865. On 7 Sept 1869 Reuben "Stanafer" married Roseanah in Wise Co., VA. They had six children between 1871 and 1880: William 1871, Mary Evelyn 1873, Elisha M., 1874, Morgan L. 1878, Laura Elizabeth 1878, and Mela L.1880. After Roseanah's death, Reuben married an Eagle woman and they had two daughters in the middle 1880s. The family moved to Claiborne County, TN about 1890. In 1897 Reuben "Standefer" married Nancy Bull Howerton (b. 14 Mar 1878 and d. 27 July 1931, buried in Spadling Cem with Reuben). Nancy brought a son to the marriage and they had eight children together between 1898 and 1923. Slay Standifer is the youngest of these. On 6 June 1932, Rubin "Standifer" married his fourth wife, Lucy Cinnamon (he gave his age at 84, she as 65). In all Reuben raised about twenty children. Reuben's parents were William "Sandifer" (b. 1788 in NC) and Mary Ann (Polley) last name unk (b. 1807 in KY). They were married in the late 1820s and had six children from 1830 to 1845 or 1846: John 1830, Susan 1833, Loucinda 1836, Samuel 1840, Joab 1842 and Reuben 1845-48. William and Mary Ann "Stanifer" were both members of the Mulberry Gap Church in Hancock Co., TN as also were William and Mary (Polly) Gilbert "Standeford". The "Standeford" spelling was used by Mary Gilbert's mother, Nancy Ann ___Cheek Gilbert in her will, where she lists Mary's children as Nancy, Susan, and Rosanna in 1828 (the will shows that Mary (Poll) is not alive in 1826). Mary's father was Joseph Hirman Gilbert who married the widow Cheek on 8 May 1784 in Shenendoah County, VA. Virginia deed records show that William and Mary (Polly), b. 1788 in VA, were married before 1811. Also death records of VA show a Joseph "Standerfer" 77 yrs, 1 mon, died on 29 Mar 1887 and was the son of William and Mary Standerfer. William's parents could have been William Standifer who married Jemima Jones on 24 June 1779 in Henry Co., VA. More probably is John Standifer who appears in the Orange County, NC Census in 1800. John's family consisted of 1 males under 10 yrs (Samuel?), 1 male 10-15 yrs (William?), 1 male 16-18 (Elisha?) and 1 male 26-45 (John). Females: 3 are 16-18, 2 are 19-25 and one is 26-45 (John's wife). *English was brought to "England" in 450 AD by the Anglos, Saxons and Jutes (Anglosaxon) raiders from Northwestern Germany. |

Hello
List:
I have been
following the news on Benjamin Standerfer's pension and Have some info that
might be interesting to you. This Benjamin is not the Benjamin from Lee Co.,
VA., That Benjamin married to Sarah Baker, was the son of Isaiah Standifer,
Grandson of William 1788, Great Gs of William 1757 etc. I have his and his
wife's applications for Civil War Pension. He was in the Confederate Army.
My
Standifer line runs from James 1797-1880, William 1822-?, Calvin Jasper
1848-1911, Robert Whitten 1881-1938, my Dad Roland Ashley 1915-1979 and me Dale
Stanidfer 1938. I think that my line ties into the same line with the above but
have not been able to tie it in yet.
Hope
this is of some help to you.

Notes for
ISAIAH STANDIFER:
Isaiah
Standifer was born Jan. 14, 1816 in Virginia of parents born in Virginia and
almost surely the son of William and Mary "Polly" (Gilbert)
Standifer. He was first taxed in Lee County, Virginia in 1836. He married Mary
Maggie Poteet about the year 1838,In 1850 they were living in Hancock County,
Tennesseee at the time of the census (Ha-387-107). Isaiah was listed as 34 and
Mary was 32, both born in Virginia. Five children had been born to their union.
In 1860
they had moved to Claiborne County where they were enumerated in the census of
Civil District 6 (674-674). Isaiah was listed incorrectly in the published
census as Josiah, age 44. Mary was 44 and all five of their children lived with
them along with three more born after the 1850 census. They were the only
Standifer family enumerated in the census of Claiborne County in 1860.
In 1870
the family was correctly listed in Claiborne County living in Civil District 8
Big Spring. Isaiah was listed as 54 and Mary was 52. Their five youngest
children still lived with them. Several other Standifer families lived in
Claiborne County in 1870 including his brother Joseph and his wife Nancy who
lived in Civil District 9 Tazewell. Next door to Joseph aged 60 lived his
apparent son William aged 38.
Isaiah
and Mary were living in Civil District 8 of Claiborne County in 1880 with their
son Benjamin F. (201-201). He was listed as B. F. Standifer age 40 born
in Virginia of parents born in Virginia with wife Sarah E. and five children.
Living nearby were the remnants of Isaiah's brother Joseph's family. They
lived in the household of Joseph
and Nancy's son John(212-212). Joseph had apparently died and Nancy was
listed as 67 years of age and the mother of John, who lived next door with his
wife Mary and a large family. (This is the family of
Sarah Stanifer of this research – Joe Payne.)
He
applied for Civil War pension in 1901 which was rejected.

I must
not have made myself clear. My Benjamin F. Standifer is not the Benjamin
Standerfer in Iowa. My Ben, b in Lee Co., VA. and died in New
Tazewell,
Claiborne Co., TN. His wife Sarah E. Baker applied for a widow's pension and
that is where I got her maiden name, Baker, also Ben's death date
of Nov.
28, 1910. As far as I know this Ben was never in Iowa and was only married
once, to Sarah E. Baker.
Hope
this helps.

Nashville, Tenn.
In regard to where we were disbanded in April
1865,our regiment, the 1st Tenn. Cav. Co. "F" commanded by Col.
Carter. My recollection is our Colonel aimed to go to our army commanded by
Gen. J. E. Johnson in N. C. and after marching and countermanding Col. Carter,
told the command that he could do no more and every man would have to care for
himself.
At this distant day can't say whether we were
in North Carolina or South West Virginia, any way our regiment were not far
from the North Carolina line.
Our regiment done duty a great part of the war
in South West Virginia and North Carolina.
After being disbanded I returned home and the
29th day of May 1865. I taken the oath at Cumberland Gap, (Tennessee crossed
out) Ky.
I solemily make oath that I volentierred in
Capt. Fulkerson's Company Co. "F" 1st Tenn (Volinteers) Cavalery in
Tazewell, Tennessee in the fall of 1862 and that I served as a faithful soldier
till I was disbanded by my Colonel in April 1865 and at no time were I absent
without lief.(spelled this way in his letter).

Linda Essary has a question for any of you Old Time Tazewell
natives. I am thinking that Linda
means Uncle Joe Buis didn’t she?
Email me or Linda if you remember Uncle Joe, I
remember him working for Wilson and Bill Hurst and being around in my younger
days in Tazzewell. Any stories you have
might be great to add to this site.
Her question -
Joe, my father's side of the family were old-time Claiborne
Co./Tazewell residents. They were the Margraves and Essarys. My
father died several years ago and I wish I'd gotten more info from
him while he was alive; however, occasionally, something will come to my mind
about a "jewel" that he shared with me. Have you always lived in Claiborne County??
Curious......what is your age??? Did you know or hear of Uncle Joe Rice (a
freed slave) who lived up behind the old drive-in???
