Joe, you have a great!!! Stone page on the internet. I have enjoyed reading and studying your page. Since I am a descendant of one of the Stone lines you have on your page and have noticed several of the children have been omitted. I would like to share with you what I have on this family. I do not estimate birth or death dates of the names I have. What I have is my understanding and simple reasoning after reading the Wills of William and Sarah Stone. Diane (Sunnie 629@aol.com)

William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va. (Totuskey Creek, Va. became part of Richmond County 5/12/1692) Seven children were born to this marriage: 1. Phillip Stone m. Sarah (he is mentioned in father's will) 2. Joshua m. Mary ( he is mentioned in father's will) 3. Mary m. John Fann ( she is mentioned in father's will) 4. Sarah b. 1671 d. 1730 m. Thomas Glascock ( she is not in will, two of her

children are mentioned) 5. Elizabeth d. 10/9/1725 m. William Dawson (she is mentioned in father's will) 6. Daughter (name unknown) m. Robert Schofield (she is not named in father's will but her husband is mentioned) 7. William d. 1749 m. Elizabeth ( he is not in his father's will but he is the Executor of his mother Sarah's will proved 1717)

Several land purchase deeds are recorded in Essex County Court House in Tappahannock, Virginia for William Stone (where Old Rappahannock County records are kept.) Deed Book # 5, page 86, 87 purchased 200 acres on Totuskey Creek , ate purchased 720 acres, page 105, recorded 4/7/1680, purchased 250 acres, page 106 recored 4/7/1680.

William Stone's will is recored in Warsaw, Va. 1/31/1707-08 in Folio F. 114V. A statement from his wife Sarah is recorded in Warsaw, Va. 1/31/1707 in Folio F 113 R. re: the disappearance of William's will which she has now found and has succeeded in getting it on record. The will of Sarah Stone is recorded May 1, 1717. Warsaw, Va. The youngest son William Stone is named as her Executor.

I have several Hoskins on my database (mostly from CT and MA), but I am currious if Ann (whom I don't have listed) is related to Dolly Hoskins, Lucy Hoskins, and Mary J. Hoskins of VA.

Dolly and Lucy are listed as wives of John Stone b. 1754, and Mary J. is the wife of John's brother, Joshua b. 1744. I am told that it is this Joshua Stone my line connects to, just haven't found that "connection."

Hi Joe!

Thanks for sending your post to the Stone mailing list for me to see!!

It didn't take long for me to see that some of your ancestors were born in Gloucester Co. VA. But then few paragraphs later you say Gloucester, Kingston Parish became Richmond Co. Actually, Kingston Parish became Mathews Co. Va in 1791.

My Stone ancestors were there, but no I don't have them documented there until about 1870. I would love to exchange more info with you. Please write and tell me why you think Kingston Parish became Richmond Co.

Can't wait to hear from you, Mary

ON MARCH 14, YOU WROTE:

David,

Joe Payne of Knoxville sent me your email address.

I have been reading the Stone page he sent to the Stone mailing group with great interest.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind. What proof do you have that Phillip Stone was born in Gloucester Co. Va ca. 1650, and his son, William born there ca. 1680.

The son, Philip Stone left Amelia County about 1750 and went to Johnston County, North Carolina. In 1750, Philip Stone of Johnston County, N.C. sold land in Amelia County, Virginia, left to him by his father. Ref: Amelia County Deed Book 4 pp. 31, 32, 33. On November 14, 1750, Philip Stone of Johnston County, N.C. conveyed to Charles Connely and wife Katherine 200 acres for 5 shillings...Land left by his father. Ref. ibid., p. 84. On April 23, 1752.. Conveyed to Charles Connally and Robert Taylor, 100 acres in Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co., Va. for 16 pounds, were Dibdall Holt now lives, Ref. ibid, p. 33.

I have my Stone ancestors documented in Kingston Parish, Mathews Co. Va from about 1870.

Please let me know, I eagerly await your reply. Thanks, Mary

Joe,
I have been looking at your helpful web site on William and Sarah Stone in Gloucester County, VA. I am a direct descendent of theirs through Philip and his son Austin Stone. In perusing your site, I read postings from Diane, who (although a few years ago) was looking for other descendents of Philip Stone. I attempted to e-mail her at the address to which there was a link, Sunnie629@aol.com, but the message came back. I'm hoping she can answer some questions for me. I also have some things to share with her. Can you help me locate her? Postings seemed to fall off on that web site after 1998 or so.

I am not a genealogical researcher, but I recently acquired historical documents on Austin Stone's land acquisitions in South Carolina, which are now available for researchers at the South Carolina Historical Society. Also, is there anyone who has done recent research into who William 1's father and grandfather was? Speculation was that his father was Capt. John Stone, Sheriff of Gloucester County, VA., and that John was the son of George Stone, who emigrated from England. However, my father and others who researched in the early 1980s ran into a blank wall when they discovered no less than eleven or more Williams during the same period in the same location.

Thank you for your help. Terry Stone (Ellen Theresa Stone)

The youngest son of William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va was Executor of his mother Sarah's will: proved 5/1/1717 recorded in Warsaw, Va.

William Stone b. ? d. 1749 wife Elizabeth moved along with most of his married children and their families from Richmond County to Amelia County, Virginia and he purchased land there. (Deed Book 1, 1735-1743 page 299.)

William Stone died 1749 in Amelia County, Virginia. His will is recorded in will book I, 1735-1761 page 55. The will is dated 12/2/1748 and proved 4/21/1749. Ex: are William Manire and Joseph Harper (sons-in-law)

The will is very detailed and lengthy.

Ten children born to William and Elizabeth Stone: 1. Ann Stone b. 3/5/1713 m. William Manire (Ex. of William's 1749 will) 2. Margaret b. 1/5/1715 m. Lewis Hammond 3. Phillip b. 1/10/1716 m. Katherine b. 1/16/1728 m. Charles Connally 9. Sarah b. 10/25/1731 m. Joseph Harper, Jr. 10. William Stone b. 3/1/1734 (no inf.)

I think the seventh child, Henry b. 9/13/1726 is in your family, do you agree??? He is listed at your Stone site as # 90.

My line is the third child, Phillip b. 1/10/1716 (brother to your Henry) He moves to N.C. and sold back land he inherited from his father in Amelia Co. Va. to his sisters and brothers. (land he sold to them is recorded) Phillip also owned over 2,700 acres in N.C. (recorded in Raleigh, N.C. deed books) I am looking for other children that Phillip and Margaret had. One of their sons was Austin Stone b. 7/12/1748 m. Elizabeth b. 2/14/1751. Austin lived in N.C. a short time and then moved to S.C. (More on Austin is you need it) Diane

Joe, Thanks for the lenthgthy response. I think it's a pretty sure thing we are talking about the same family going back to the original William (married to Sarah), who David Stone estimates was born 1615 and died 1704-1707. He (David) follows the line with William's son, Philip. I believe the Sarah I'm descended from is Philip's sister, William's daughter.

My information on this family comes from Larry Glassco's book, The Glassco(ck) Saga. That book (which has brief mentions of the Stones because Sarah married Thomas Glasscock about 1689) claims there is a 1707 will of William in Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA. In the will, William mentions his wife, Sarah, and children Philip, Joshua, Elizabeth, and Mary, and his grandson, John Glasscock (whose mother was Sarah Stone, so presumably she was dead by 1707). Glassco cites this will as being in William & Mary Quarterly, vol 17 (ser. 1), page 84.

In the file you sent there is mention that William has other children besides Philip. Do we know who these other children are. I'm guessing they must be Joshua, Elizabeth, Mary, and Sarah.

One other point that I would really like to clear up. In the LDS ancestral files, there is a Col. John Stone who is listed as the father of William Stone, the father of Sarah Stone who married Thomas Glasscock. In Glassco's book he mentions in a footnote that Col. Stone administered the oath of justice of the peace to Thomas Glasscock in 1692. Col. Stone was the sheriff of Richmond County. Glassco believes the William Stones might be related to this Col. John Stone but he's not sure how. It's clear from the dates that the LDS connection of Col. John's son William is not our William. However, before I realized that our connection was not direct from Col John Stone I looked him up and he has a rather illustrious background through his mother, Mary Vernon. If we could find a connection to Col. John, I think we'd impress all those doubters (in my family anyway, who wonder why I spend so much time at this hobby and who are quite bored by my stories unless I can come up with something spectacular in our collective family history, such as the Mayflower.)

Anyhow, I hope you can use this information on William. Let me know if you can confirm any of it. And let's see if we can find that connection to Col. John. Kelley

Hey Joe, I snail mailed the Historical Society Chronicle to you saturday and I found a descendant of William and Sarah's daughter named Elizabeth that married William Dawson her name is Patricia and she lives in Kentucky. her e-mail address is PatriciaOB@prodigy.net. From what she told me one of Elizabeth (Stone) Dawson's children was named Sarah Dawson married Andrew Morgan, lived in Nelson Co. KY and had abt. 17 children!!!

( if you would like a copy of her letter for your files I will forward it to you.)

I was thinking last night that now you have five people that have e-mailed you as coming from William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va.
1. John Walton Stone from son Joshua married Mary and (wayne nash???)
2. Lorna Cudley from daughter Mary married John Fann (ljcudney)
3. Kelly from daughter Sarah married Thomas Glascock (dkkmc)
4. Patricia OBoyle from daughter Elizabeth married William Dawson(Patricia OB@prodigy.net)
5. I think (if the reseacher is right with her information in the Chronicle)
you (Henry) and I (Phillip) from youngest son William married Elizabeth

After you receive the chronicle and look at the information and take note of the people that have e-mailed you about the children of William and Sarah that you will put them on your site as the father and mother of # 50, #50 #51,#53,#54, and vi. You should change Elizabeth m. Schofield (she did not marry schofield she married William Dawson) The estimated birthdates do not fit either. It does not take a rocket scientist to see Joshua b. 1725, could not have been born after his mother d.1717 and father had died 1707

The Gov. of Md. and all his people look good coming from William de Twiste
but all of us Stones did not come from that set. cu Diane

(19) Lucy3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 29 Oct 1721, and married (52) Henry Green.

(20) Joanna3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 11 Apr 1724. Joanna died on 11 Dec 1725.

(21) Henry3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 3 Sep 1726 at Amelia Co., Va, and married (53) Frances Reed who was born in 1729 at Amelia Co., Va.

This is taken for The History of Washington Co. Tennessee, pg 504.

Henry Stone and his son William are on the first tax list of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, having moved there, then Halifax Co., in 1767. William was listed as being 23 years old in 1767. They both lived on the Dan River near William Bean. Henry was on the tax list in Watauga in 1787 so he must have come with William and the Beans.

As far as I can tell, this lineage is correct. I have seen some things that would indicate that your lineage is correct. I have been exploring the possibility of a Henry Stone being a relative of my ancestor Marble (or Marvel) Stone who was living around this area (actually in Albemarle and Prince Edward Co.) of Virginia around this time. I have Henry as being born 3 Sept 1726 and marrying Frances Read. They had a son William who is listed with a son John Thomas who married Sarah Henderson. J. T. had a daughter Elizabeth who married John Breeding.
Other children of John Stone were Mary, Thomas H., Reuben F., Susan, and John. I have Henry's father listed as William and Elizabeth Stone who lived in Amelia County, VA where William died in 1749. William was the son of Phillip Stone. Phillip's father was William Stone of Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., VA; later became Richmond Co., VA. His wife's name was Sarah. He died between 1704 and 1707 in Richmond Co. and left a will.
I have other children's names if you want them, but didn't know if you wanted me to go into that much detail. I have been trying to find anyone who knows the identity of a William Stone who was born ca 1760 in VA. He married Elizabeth Hardeman of Albemarle County. This William had several children, but two whose names stand out in particular: Marble and Solomon.
My ancestor Marble (who md. Lucy Bostick ca 1755) had a son named Solomon. I think this is too similar to be just coincidence. William Stone's father is listed in one source's documents as being Henry Stone, b. ca1740 in Virginia. I wonder if these two families might be related. I hope that I have been at all helpful regarding your own lineage. If you see anything on Marble Stone or William Stone in any of your searches, I would be much appreciative. I look forward to any and all future correspondence with you.

In History of Washington Co. Tennessee the follow appears on page 504.

During William Stone's residence in Washington Co., he was one of its most prominent citizens and took an active part in church and community affairs. Stone was a Baptist and he and his family are belived to have attended the early Watauga River Church, which is said to have later become Sinking Creek Baptist Church. His civic record was impressive. Besides appearing regularly on the tax lists and in court records as a juror, he was appointed Tax Assessor in 1780 and Captain of the militia in 1790. Moreover, records show that he was a good businessman who bought and sold large tracts of land. Finally after 18 years in Washington Co. in 1796, he and his son Robert removed to newly formed Grainger Co., where they boughtland and William erected a grist mill on Richland Creek near the present-day town of Blain. Both participated actively in local affairs, and made valuable contributions to the organization and developemnt of the new county. Some believe William died in Grainger Co. around 1803 and others that in 1811 he removed to Missouri. William married in Virgina before moving to Tennessee, but his wife's identity has never been determined.

The Book "Leaves From the Family Tree" by Penelope Johnson Allen in talking about the William Bean family from Pittsylvania Co. Va and settled early in 1769 on Boone's creek, a tributary of Watauga said he was joined by his kindred and friends from the same section of Virginia where he had formely lived, and such worthy pioneers as his son, William Bean, Jr., William Stone, Thomas Hardiman and Capt. George Russell. ( Buy Leaves From the Family Tree at Amazon.com )

Hi Joe. I'm the guy who sent you those copies of papers Susannah Stone filed a few years after her husband's death in 1815. I have found a record of John Stone in the County Court minutes in 1807, proving he was in Claiborne County by the time his daughter, Elizabeth [later Mrs. John Breeding] was born in 1808. The elder Reuben Stone [not John and Susannah's son but the older one] served in the same company in the War of 1812 with John Stone. Older Reuben survived and returned to Claiborne County. Both this Reuben and the older Thomas [not your Thomas Henderson Stone] appear in the records of the County Court as late as 1816. The older Reuben also transferred some land to Susannah in before 1820, and I'm in the process of getting a copy of the deed to see what it says...hopefully it will give some clue as to where the older Reuben and Thomas went after they left Claiborne County.

My cousin and I and both our spouses placed a memorial stone for John Stone at Ft. Claiborne, Alabama yesterday morning, then drove straight home. It was a drive of about twelve hours for us.

I am very much interested in the Benjamine and the Elijah Stone which you just sent as an e-mail. What really caught my eye was the fact of the Benjamine Stone dying in Cadiz, Ohio which is in either Harrison or Carroll County Ohio. I am looking for a Sarah Stone who gave her place of birth as being in Maryland. She was born in 1806 but I do not know her parents but I have done some census work in Harrison and Carroll County Ohio and I found the following Stones in Harrison County Ohio:Elijah Stone-Arc Township, in 1820and 1830 showing that he married a May (could be Mary) Suddeth on Dec. 12, 1822 (can't read my writing so I think that it reads 1822.) Also, Jeremiah Stone, Green Township in 1820 and 1830; Jesse Stone in Frederick Township; Solomon Stone in North Township in 1820 and married Catherine Albaugh on August 10, 1819(P. S. the Morris Albaugh family just lived in the same area as my gggrandfather Joseph Gough who married this Sarah Stone.) Benjamin Stone in Green Township in 1830; James Stone in Washington Township in 1830; John Stone in Green Township in 1830; and John Stone in Rumley Township in 1830. Were the Benjamin Stone, Jeremiah Stone, John Stone and the Elijah Stone I just posted for you all related?

I also have this information from the 1790 Census in Maryland: John Stone in Charles County; John Stone in Frederick County; John Stone in Prince George County; John Stone in Washington County; John H. Esq. in Charles County; Nehemiah Stone in Charles County; and Thomas , William, Hanson, David, and Mary Stone all in Charles County.

Using the time frame which I have to work with and using the 1820 and 1830 Harrison County Ohio census, I was able to show that Elijah Stone perhaps could have been my gggrandmother's father but of course there is nothing firm on this.

How extensive has your research been on the Stones in Harrison County Ohio? If you have, would you please share your information with me? Hoping to hear from you very soon. Thank you, Janet Goff Jenkins

(85) John4 Stone, (Joshua3, Joshua2, William1) was born in 1802 at Ga, and married (135) Orra Janet Orr who was born in 1815 at Ga. John died in 1854 at Rusk Co., Texas and was buried at Ross Cem. Orra Janet died in 1858 at Panola Co., Texas and was buried at Ross Cem, Rusk Co., Texas.

John and wife, Orra, married in Alabama where their first four children were born: (the twins, Edna and James were by former wife who had died in Alabama), then John moved his family to Tennessee where the next three children were born: (Frankie Melinda, 1835; Sylvanus, 1837; and jo Anna, 1840). They must have left Tennessee early in the year, 1840, for John's family is not on the U.S. Census for any Tennessee County near other Stones. Since no birth records were kept, on must place them by others in the family who continued to live in Tennessee and were on census lists. This method of reasoining would place them in Warren County for about six years, near John's widowed sister, Dolly Coleman Stone Harrison. Leaving Tennessee for Texas during the "Great Migration" to Texas, john's family spent some months in Mississippi where Peter Wynn Stovall Stone was born, 1841. The journey to Texas was completed a few months later, probably in 1842 or certainly not later than 1843. The other children were born in Panola County where they made their permanent home. Land was bought on Irons Bayou and the family settled at last in their chosen location.

Hi Mr. Payne:
Today I received from the GSA in Washington a packet of material on John Stone, the War of 1812 soldier who died in 1815 and left a widow in Claiborne County named Susannah Stone. In with the papers is an affidavit she made in Tazewell on January 12, 1819, in which she names all her children and their dates of birth: 1. Thomas Stone, b. Aug 13 1802 2. Reuben Stone, b. Evening, Joe -

Thank's very much for your message, and the URL to your "Stone" web site. I admire all the hard work that obviously has gone into the latter; and wish I could identify with the William Stone of Washington and Grainger County. However, I'm afraid the temptation to link a forebear with an illustrious early family may have gotten ahead of the need for sourcing of information.

I may be very wrong, but I do not believe John Stone, husband of Susannah Henderson, and father of Thomas, Reuben, Mary, Betsy, John and Susan was the child of William Stone (of Washington and Grainger Counties). As we know, Susannah filed an application for a widow's pension following John's 1815 death, in which she stated she and John had been married in February 1802 in Union Co. S. C.. We also, know that the couple's first two children, Thomas H. and Reuben F. were born respectively in 1802 and 1804 in South Carolina.

One further comment, John and Susannah named a child John, but Thomas Stone also named a child John. The latter was younger by about five years; and it was he who married Phoebe, ca 1837 (last name unknown to me)

The following information sets forth my understanding of John Thomas Stone's siblings and antecedents. If I'm wrong I'd be delighted to see sources which would more securely link the family to their earlier forebears.

With appreciation for your message.

Tom

===================

John, Reuben and Thomas Stone, Claiborne County, Early 19th Century

John and Susannah Stone arrived in Claiborne County ca 1807, traveling from South Carolina by way of Virginia with their children: Thomas, b. 1802 in S. C. , Reuben, b. 1804 in S. C., and Polly, b. 1806 (assertedly in Virginia). John and Susannah had been married in Union County, South Carolina in February 1802.

In the meantime, a Reuben and Thomas Stone were identified in the area as well. Reubin for example signed a Grainger County petition in 1806, and Reubin and Thomas Stone were each directed by the Claiborne County court in 1808 to assist with road maintenance.

Other official sightings occurred in 1809, when Reuben Stone witnessed a deed on behalf of Abraham Hurst; in 1811, when the Claiborne County land conveyance records show the purchased of property by Thomas Stone; and the 1814 militia service of John and Reuben Stone. They served in Captain John Brock's Company, Col. Samuel Bayless' Regiment of East Tennessee Militia (Claiborne County) . John died in January of 1815, while on militia duty. As noted above, Susannah then filed for a widow's pension, witnessed by Reuben Stone.

As Johnıs widow, Susannah was authorized by the Claiborne County Court in August of 1815 to serve as administratrix of John's estate.8 However, there is no record the estate included land; and Claiborne County grantor/grantee land records do not indicate purchase or sale by John and Susannah. However, they may have been sharing property with Reuben; as in 1816 the latter transferred real estate to Susannah. The deed index book does not indicate when or how Reuben came into ownership of the land. There is no further known reference to Reuben, indicating he may have died, or moved from the area.

9 Considering that John and Susannah had been married in Union County, South Carolina in 1802, I examined the 1800 S. C. census and found that two Henderson and three Stone families had been enumerated in Union County in that year: They were:

John Henderson, page 242, with a family composition of 00101 00001. As there was no daughter in the family, it was not likely to have been Susannah's.

Mary Henderson, page 230, family composition of 11000 - 12001 (although there was no male head of family, there were two small boys, a girl under ten, and a girl ten to sixteen). Based on age the latter could have been Susannah.

Caleb Stone, page 237, family composition of 23001 - 11100 (as there was one boy under ten, and three boys ages 10 to 16 it is not likely to have been John's family)
Nancey Stone, page 230 family composition of 01100 - 01001 (with one boy age 10 to 16, and one male 16 to 25, John could well have been within this family
Christopher Stone, page 195 family composition of 10010 - 00000 (as the only child was under ten; thus would not have been John's family).

Given the above, Susannah Henderson may have been the child of Mary Hendeson, and John Stone could have been the child of Nancey Stone. The two families were listed on page 230 of the census; and in each case the families were without male heads of family, indicating the women were either widows, or heading up their respective families while husbands were away seeking land or on other business.

Separate from the above analysis, my conjecture is that John, Reuben and Thomas were closely related either as brothers or perhaps two brothers and their father for the following reasons: a) John and Susannah named their first two children Thomas and Reuben respectively; b) Reuben and John served together in the militia; c) Reuben served as witness for Susannah when she prepared a widowıs application for a pension; d) the following year Reuben conveyed his Claiborne County land to Susannah; e) an 1839 Claiborne Co. deed refers to Thomas Stone as Thomas M. Stone10; and Johnıs son Reuben named a son, born in 1838, Thomas M. Stone. In turn, Thomas M. Stone, Sr. named his first son John, and another son, Reuben.

Concerning the Stone antecedents, although my Union County, S. C. analysis may be faulty, Iıve seen nothing to suggest a relationship with William and Robert Stone of Grainger County, other than they were in Grainger County during the period of time Thomas, Reuben and John Stone were in Claiborne County. To the contrary, Thomas and Catherineıs grandson, Abraham Grubb maintained that Thoması forebears were one William Stone, born June 1765, died June 1835; John Stone, born 1740, died 1820; and Thomas Stone, born 1715, died 1780. Unfortunately the grandson did not provide additional information.

This is from another Bible Record of Thomas Wesley Stone that I got from Milly Baumgardner, my first cousin , who is directly kin to the Stone's through her grandmother Amanda Stone.

This family had eleven children, who I will take from the family bible record.

Thomas Wesley was the ninth, I believe that the following included in the Family Record records Manervey Stone, who married Drewrey Laffoon, December 9, 1850, as another of the family. This bible record says that it was bought on July 1, ????, from C. Powella Monday and E. A. Hurst, Paid him the money. T. W. Stone was still alive when he bought it so I wonder if it wasn't stolen.

The man who wrote the note did not give his name.

I'm not sure where the Watkins name came in but I'm positive this is the Fetney Hurst that married Ruben F. Stone.

Mary Hansard tells the following story in Old Time Tazewell.

My mind runs back to the time when I attended school on Ball Creek, near where Mr. W. H. Farmer now lives ( . WILLIAM HENDERSON FARMER ). The school was taught by Rev. Nathan S. McDowell I still remember many of my old schoolmates that I became attached to in the neighborhood of Lone Mountain. They were: the Days, the Breedings, the Johnstons, the Hursts, the Jennings, the Shumates, the Hodges, the Leabows, the Cardwells, the Herrells, the Bowls, the Ragens, and many other too tedious to mention. I love to think of those good old citizens that used to live around in that neighborhood in 1837 when I was young; but they have all passed away long since, and most of thos old schoolmates also, and those of us that are still living have changed so much in our appearance from young to old that when we meet we don not recognize each other.

Mr. Payne,

I have enjoyed your web site. It appears we have some relatives in
common. I am Ann Edmondson Doege of Hinsdale, IL. My father, David
Oscar Edmondson, (1891-1985) was the son of Jefferson Davis Edmondson
(son of James Edmondson and Rachel Widener) and Charlotte Jane 'Charity'
Goin (daughter of Sterling Goin and Mary Jane Keck). My mother, Ethel
Blanche Farmer (1900-1999) was the daughter of Daniel Farmer (son of
Hugh Farmer, Sr. and Rose Ann Arnwine) and Mary Elizabeth Baumgardner
(daughter of James A. Baumgardner and Emily Jane Russell).

William Baumgardner, husband of Amanda Stone, was the oldest brother of
my Grandmother, Mary Baumgardner Farmer. The first two years my mother
attended Claiborne County High School she lived with Uncle Will and Aunt
Amanda during the week as she lived in near Lone Mountain - too far to
travel every day. Mother never ceased to be thankful to them for their
kindness in enabling her to attend high school and she spoke of them as
late as 1998. About 1946 Mother and I traveled from our home in
Bakersfield, CA to Claiborne County. One of the visits we made was to
Aunt Amanda.

I met Clyde, the son of Will and Amanda, once at Grandmother Farmer's
funeral. If you have an e-mail or snail mail address for his daughter I
would like to have it.

I have a picture of a Baumgardner family reunion attended by Will and
Amanda and I think all the then living children and grandchildren. It
was held at the James A. Baumgardner farm. I also have a photo of
Claiborne County High School as it looked when my parents attended and a
photo of Mother's graduating class - 7 May, 1919. I think Mother told
me that was the first graduating class but I'm not sure. I have not
found an announcement or any year book. I would be glad to share copies
of these with you if you are interested. Unfortunately, I do not have
the equipment or skills to scan and send by e-mail.

My father's aunt, Edwina Goin, also married into the Stone family. The
Edmondson family has many stories to tell of her frugality.

Susan Stone was the first wife of Hugh Farmer, Sr. Their children were
half-siblings to my grandfather, Daniel.

Regarding the first three pictures on your web site - pictures not
identified as to family - I do not think they are Baumgardner pictures
and I have many Baumgardner pictures and do no see any similarities.

Lastly, I ordered a Claiborne County book and have not received it.
Have they been sent?

Sincerely,

Ann E. Doege

Hi Joe,

Would we be cousins? I do have a lot of work i've done on the Stone side of my family.. Probably too much to e-mail, but this weekend I am going to copy what I have. Is there an address I can send it too. I have a packet that was had written several years ago by Imogene Rose who was married to Tom Rose and they lived just outside Tazwell. She was the daughter of Ollie Stone Evans, who was a daughter of Robert and Virginia Susan. I visited there in 1958 when I was 14 and we all stayed with Tom and Imogene. He was very comical. He had a slight speech defect and kept everyone in stiches all the time. My dad, D. B. Nash had a 1957 Ford which had been converted to butane and Tom just could not get over that. Tom and Imogene had a daughter, Rebeccah, who I have lost contact with. Robert Stone and his wives(2) had a total of 23 children, 13 by the first and 10 I believe by the 2nd. He supposedly was an excellent maker of whiskey and sold it to the military during the civil war, which may explain all the children. Joke. My grandfather, Thomas Anderson Stone died in Tahoka Texas in 1939. When I visited Tazwell, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gideon Stone, my uncle, from Knoxville, and his wife Hannah. He was very prominent and had invented some surgical tools still in use today. He was blind when I met him. Anyway, I will send you the stuff I have next week.

Thanks, for the info.
