Rev. Billy Graham Revival in Knoxville - May 29, 1970

During the early 1970's many may remember that there was a lot of campus unrest. I had the opportunity along with several friends at the time to travel to Neyland Stadium to attend the Graham revival whereupon President Richard Nixon appeared. You might remember what was happening in the country and overseas at this time. Many called this MY HIPPIE DAYS. I think that someone got me mixed up with a fellow sitting a few seats from me by the name of Carol Bible. Mr. Bible is circled in the picture at the bottom of the page and got an entire photo opportunity upon his arrest. Also I understand that several of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) militant faction "The Weather Underground" were in the stands that evening. If anyone would like to watch the movie at the end of this page it has a color clip of the Neyland Stadium visit of Nixon with Graham about midway through the movie. I recommend it to anyone interested in this little bit of history. Another page has some letters from my brother during the evacuation five years later of the American Embassy as Americans were pulling out of the not only Cambodia but Laos and Vietnam.

Notice the guy circled.
Must be lost somewhere in the evolutionary chain but his heart was in the right place.

You might recognize me in the lower picture. The couple lower left.

Here is a picture from February 2018 Knoxville News-Sentinel, Protests and Progress: Nixon visit put Knoxville on national stage.

Communists on Campus: The Weather Underground

If your interested in this part of history you must watch this. The Weather Underground's own movie about their activities in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Nixon's appearance at Neyland Stadium is included in a short color clip about half way through the movie.
