(1) Matthias CHITWOOD was born in 1681 in England, and married Mary KEY, daughter of Richard KEY, who was born Jan 12,
1684/1685 in Northumberland, Co. Va. Mathias died in 1754 in Powhatan Co. Va., Cumberland Co., Virginia,

Notes
for Matthias CHITWOOD:
Scott Co. Historical Society.
This is on pg. 48. Where his Will is copied. His son Richard was
executor.
In the book "Chitwood Family"
by Jean C. Tombaugh, printed 1976 by Tombaugh Publishing House of
Rochester, Indiana,
the author presumes that
Matthias is a grandson of Thomas Chetwood, an immigrant to Lancaster
CO, VA, based on the
geographical location of
Matthias' marriage records (Northumberland CO, VA). The author guesses
that Matthias is the son of
Berkeley (son of Thomas)or
another son, but is looking for more info on his parentage. The book
also states that
his will was proved on Jan 27,
1755 in Cumberland, CO, VA under the spelling of Marthias Cheatwood and
that "in 1695 Matthias
was living with Mrs. Elizabeth
Banks, Northumberland CO.,VA - his age being given as 14. Certificate
was given
to George Espridge and assigned
to Mrs. Banks for 450 acres of land for transporting nine persons from
England,
including Matthew, or Matthias
Chitwood."

month or six weeks to make so good

consideration for the benefit of themselves and their
children for in this country I can
maintain my family in six months better than there in the hole year. I

made in hunting of bees and fishing.
On the 5th day of February I and my boys found 13 bee trees and a few
day ago I caut a fish that weighted 106
pound and was 11 inches between the
eyes. There is a number of little things that I might send you to draw
your attention but time and opportunity won't
permit. My family is all satisfide

Hello Joe,
I see that there is some confusion in your
Pleasant Chitwood lines. Dunno if you knew that there are several
Pleasant's early on in Matthias' line. Think they liked the name or
something.
<shrug> So going to try and catch you up to
speed a little. Hope it helps you out.
Pleasant Chitwood (Matthias (1st) Richard (2nd)
James & Martha WHITE (3rd and they had 9 children, Pleasant was the
#2 child)):
Married Sarah COWAN on 28 September 1797. (You

that Pleasant's line is) they had 11 children:
James

Daniel
Polly
Hugh C.
Isaac

THOMPSON)

Chitwood (2nd)married Alice CARPENTER and they had
7 chidlren, Pleasant being the 6th child):
James
Moses
Shadrack
Joshua
Joesph

Barbara BARNS on 28 Feb 1792)
Amos
Pleasant Chitwood (Matthias (1st), Captain James
Chitwood (2nd) married Barbara BARNS and they

Research notes on Captain James CHITWOOD
(Pleasant's Chitwood father, the husband of Barbara BARNS):
Capt.
James Chitwood was a Tory during the Revolutionary War and was captured
and hung after the battle of King's Mountain, NC.
"The names of the comdemned Tories were---Col.
Ambrose Mills, CAPTAIN JAMES CHITWOOD, Capt Wilson, Capt Walter Gilkey,
Capt. Grimes, Lt. Lafferty, John McFall, John Bibby,
and Augustine Hobbs. They were swing off (the
Gallows Oak) three at a time, and left suspended at the place of
execution.
According to Lt. Allaire's account they died like
soldiers---like martyr's in their own and friend's estimation. "These
brave but unfortunate Loyalists," says Allaire,
"with their latest breath expressed their
unutterable detestation of the Rebels, and of their base and infamous
proceedings; and, as they were being turned off, extolled their
King and the British Government. Mills.
Wilson and CHITWOOD doed like romans.....The poor
Loyalist leaders had been left swinging from the sturdy oak upon which
they had been executed. No sooner had the
Whigs moved off, than Mrs. Martha Bickerstaff, of
Biggerstaff, the wife of Capt. Aaron Bickerstaff who served under
Ferguson, and been morally wounded
at King's Mountain, with t he assistance of an old
man who worked on the farm, cut down the nine dead bodies. Eight of
then were buried in a shallow trench, some two feet deep;
while the remains of Capt. CHITWOOD were conveyed
by some of his friend's on a plank, half mile away to Benjamin
Bickerstaff's where they were interred on a hill still used as a
grave-yard." Taken from the book "Kings Mountain
and its Heroes", by Lyman C Draper.
Capt James Chitwood would have been the Uncle
of James Chitwood, who was one of the founders of Winfield
Formerly Chitwood) TN. It is probable
that he is named for his Uncle.

"Captian James and two of his sons Shadrack and
Moses, were arrested after the Battle of King's Mountain and tried for
treason. All were convicted but only James was executed by hanging;
Shadrack and Moses were granted 99 year reprieves.
There are several accounts of this incident in print, the most notable
is found in "King's Mountain and Its Heroes" by Lyman C Draper.
According to this account James was buried in
Aaron Bickerstaff's family graveyard near the "Gallows Oak" from which
he was hung."

That about does it for the Pleasant's of the line.
I hope it helps you out. I know I got very confused until Julie
Chitwood and Judith Knight set me straight.
They are descendants from both of the Pleasant's.
Write me if thers anything else I can help out
with.
Take care,
Kimberly

Letter from Lucky & Yoe,
Succesors to Logan & Lucky,
Attorneys at Law,
Knoxville, Tn Nov, 19th 1886
Mr Riley Philips,
Huntsville, Tenn.
Dear Sir:
I trust you have, before this,
received safely the body of Nannie, your daughter.
I found on my return home, Wednesday
evening, that it would be impossible to send by press as directed by
your telegram,
to Helenwood, as it could not leave
here until Thursday morning at 6:30 o'clock not connect with Con.
Southern R. R. train; could not leave
Chattanooga in all probability until Friday morning as the night train
on that road does
not stop at Hellenwood so we were in
formal.
I decided it was best to ship by
Buckeye - on Knox. & Ohio Road & thence by wagon. Also we could
not ship by Express.

Notes for Joseph (Joe Tucker) PHILLIPS:
!This
is the Authors Grandfather, who he knew well, as he didn't die
until 1959.
Several things I remember about
my Granddad Phillips were his visits to my parents house in Tazewell, where he slept
in the guest bedroom in the four
poster handmade cherry bed,
made by my Uncle Doug Wilson. Granddad was a very loving person and usually enjoyed a
good joke. He was a fisherman in his
earilier years and liked going
with my father and uncle. He chewed tobacco and would keep a spit cup by the
bed. He enjoyed a good cigar on occasion and
glad that my brother George
remembered to send him some, Havana, if I remember correctly. I remember an accident
he had once while staying with us and
attempting to return to Scott
County on a bad winter day. He came back to the house with a cut on his head. I
remember his trips to Texas with my
father, where he owned a farm,
360 acres. He had bought the farm along with Roberta Carr, Park A. Carr's wife sometime
maybe in the early 1900's. Mrs. Carr
and her husband had owned the
farm since the late 1800's. It was located near Plainview, Texas. Just before selling the
farm, that my Granddad had
bought along with my father
from Mrs. Carr, they had drilled for and struck a water well and had two crops of cotton.
They had drilled two wells, the first
hit a pocket of natural gas,
which they capped and moved on to another section where the water was struck. They got in the
neighborhood of $80,000.00 for the
farm and retained about 1/8th
the minieral rights. I have done extensive research on the ownership of these rights
and whether any drillings have been done.
There are two articles I wrote
for the Claiborne County Historical Society regarding my Granddad's exploits while an
Agent with the ATF, Prohibition
Division of the Treasury
Department. I believe the Winter 1992 Edition and the Spring 1993. Many articles from the
Lousville Courier and papers in
Memphis and Chicago are among
the items in my possession. Among his other accomplishments were his first job with the
Cumberland Chronical, 1890's,
his his serving in the Spanish
American War, the Phillipians and in China during the Boxer Rebellion. He returned and
married my Grandmother, had the
first power and light company
in Claiborne Co., the first motion picture theater, was County Road Commissioner was
Captain of the local Volunteer malitia, was
a U.S. Marshall, Pinkerton
Agent and lastly Deputy Chief Adminstrator over Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee for the U. S.
Treasury Department's Prohibition
Service. The Commercial Hotel
that was owned and operated by Abner Hansard a cabinet maker, the fifth house was the only
building facing Main Street on the next
block. It was Graham's lumber
house. Since that time it has been turned around and is now used as a store house by Joe
Phillips. The sixth house, Buchanan
Brothers large store building
occupied the southwest corner of the third block.
The tenth house stood on the
site of the Shell Hotel and was a large brick store owned by J. L. Evans and Brother.

"James
first had a land grant in Virginia; then he came to NC and settled near
Lawndale between Mabel and Know Creeks. His NC land grant
from George III reached from
Bellwood to below Sandy Plaines Church (20 sq mi). James, a Tory, was
captured at the battle of Kings
Mountain and was brought back
to near Sunshine or Gilbertown and sentenced with 39 others to be
hanged. They were hanged in threes,
and he was the ninth man to be
hanged." - Ben Jenkins (son of Lawson) as told to Virginia Greene
DePriest
"Capt. James Chitwood was a
Loyalist who was taken prisoner at the battle of King's Mountain in
late September,1780.
The victoriouspatriots were
itching for r evenge, and decided to stop and hold whatwas termed a
"drum head trial" the fir st night the
prisoners werebeing marched
from the battle site. A score a local folks who hadtaken the loyalists
side were convicted and sentenced
to die. Nine were indeed hung,
when high officers interrupted the proceedings and put a halt to the
executions.
Eight were buried in shallow
graves bythe side of the road immediately after the executions were
stopped.The body of James Chitwood
was carried by some local
sympathizers tothe crown to their own family burial ground about a mile
away andgiven a real grave.
His sons were arrested by
patriot forces andgiven several choices - take their father's political
side and face exile or
take the Oath of Allegiance to
the patriot cause and be ontheir way. They chose to take the Oath, and
left North Carolina forless
and settles lands further
west."........sent to me in e-mail byJane Dresser "Capt. James Chitwood
was a Tory during the Revolutionary
War and wascaptured and hung
after the battle of King's Mountain NC. "The namesof the condemned
Tories were --- Colonel Ambrose Mills,
Capt. JamesChitwood, Capt.
Wilson, Capt. Walter Gilkey, Capt. Grimes, LieutenantLafferty, John
McFall, John Bibby, and Augustine Hobbs.
They were swung off the Gallows
Oak, three at a time, and left suspended at the place of execution.
According to Lieutenant
Allaire's acocunt, theydied
like soldiers --- like martyrs, in their own and friends'estimation.
"These brave but unfortunate
Loyalists', says Allaire,'with
their latest breath expressed their unutterable detestation ofthe
Rebels, and of their base and
infamous proceedings; and , as
they were being turned off, extolled their King and the British
Government, Mills, Wilson, and Chitwood
died like Romans.....The poor
Loyalistleaders had been left swinging from the sturdy oak upon which
they hadbeen executed. No sooner
had the Whigs moved off, than
Mrs. MarthaBickerstaff, the wife of Capt. Aaron Bickerstaff who had
served underFerguson, and been
mortally wounded at King's
Mountain, with theassistance of an old man who worked on the farm, cut
down the ninedead bodies.
Eight of them were buried in a
shallow trench, some two feet deep; while the remains of Capt. Chitwood
were conveyed by some
of his friends, on a plank,
half a mile away to BenjaminBickerstaff's, where they were interred on
a hill still used as agrave-yard.
