A
Genealogy Report For
JAMES
F. CRUTCHFIELD
John Critchfield
or Scritchfield was the oldest son of William (S)critchfield of New Jersey. Some
researchers believe John's mother was an Opdycke,
perhaps named Agnes Opdycke, based on a reference in
the 1729 will of Johannes Lourense Opdycke indicating that "William Critchfield shall have his bils
and bonds delivered up without any mollistation."
The Opdyckes were of Dutch origin, having first
settled in the Colony of New Amsterdam (present-day New York City). The origins
of the (S)critchfields are
unknown, although most researchers believe them to have come from either
England or Wales, and possibly to bear a
relationship with a Crutchfield/Critchfield family
whose presence is documented in Boston in the late 1600s.
Born around 1720, John Critchfield found work as a constable in New Jersey and
pursued the same line of work upon relocating sometime in the 1750s to the
Yadkin River Valley along the frontier of western North Carolina. The identity
of his wife is unknown, but they had at least six sons -- Samuel P, John,
Nathaniel, Amos, Arthur and William. Following John Senior's death around 1779,
the sons began to disperse, with the exception of William, and his wife Lydia Coomes, who remained in North Carolina.
Samuel P, who sometimes
went by the monicker "Capt
Samuel," relocated to the Patrick/Wythe County region of Virginia, and
eventually moved to the Claiborne/Campbell County region of Tennessee.
Nathaniel, John and
Arthur all surface in the 1810 census living in Crab Orchard in Lincoln County,
Kentucky. John and Arthur eventually went on to Indiana, while Nathaniel
appears to have stayed in Kentucky.
Amos and his wife first
journeyed to Spartanburg, South Carolina, but ultimately joined with the (S)critchfields who had gone to
Kentucky, and on into Indiana.
Besides these sons of
John Critchfield, there was another set of four (S)critchfields living from the late
1770s through the 1840s in the same vicinities, including Surry, North
Carolina; Wythe and Patrick counties in Virginia, and the Claiborne/Campbell
region of eastern Tennessee. Although it's not been proven, all signs point to
these four -- Palmer, Hiram, John and Joshua -- being brothers. It's also
believed they are sons of John Critchfield Senior's
brother Joshua, although again, that's not been verified. This Joshua does
appear, though, on the tax rolls for Surry County, North Carolina in 1782, and
there are ample census, land and legal records that verify the presence of
Palmer, Hiram, John and Joshua Junior.
Several other (S)critchfields lived in the
Claiborne/Campbell county region of Tennessee between 1800 and 1830 -- a
William, a James, a Richard and a few other Hirams
and Joshuas. It's not clear at this time if they are
other sons of Joshua Senior, relatives of John the Constable, their grandsons
or unrelated parties. A courthouse fire in Claiborne County,
plus the loss of all 1810 and 1820 Census reports for eastern Tennessee, have
made solid documentation difficult to obtain.
Furthermore, by the time
these sons, grandsons, nephews and possible other relatives died, some of them
had dropped the "S" from their surnames, and were known simply as Critchfields or, in other cases, Crutchfields.
There was little standardization in the spelling, and so various family lines
spawned by these men now go by an amazing number of surnames -- not only Critchfields and Crutchfields,
but also Crithfields, Scritchfields,
Scrutchfields and Scutchfields.
The evolving surnames from one generation to the next have often confounded and
confused their descendants, making this a difficult family to follow and trace.
In general, when
searching for documentary evidence of their movements and whereabouts, it's
best to seek them out as "Scritchfields" in
their early years, but more often as "Critchfields"
or another variation in their later years. The exact variations to try are
different for each branch of the family. The Scrutchfield
name, for instance, got adopted by some of the family members who ventured west
to Missouri, while the Scutchfield surname found
popularity among another branch in Floyd County, Kentucky.
Most of the descendants
in Indiana, Illinois and Kansas, and a large number in Missouri, now go by Critchfield, but some, like their cousins in Tennessee, go
by Crutchfield. Whether they are Scritchfields, Critchfields, Crutchfields, Scrutchfields or Scutchfields,
they are all members of the same extended family -- all descended from either
John (S)critchfield the
Constable's sons or else his likely nephews.

FAMILY TREES
Each family tree shows
the reported children, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of a family
group. In order to reduce redundancy,
any family group which is wholly included within another family tree may not be
reported separately.
Above each of the
great-grandparent boxes (top row), a continuation family tree reference number
is shown if the great-grandparent is recorded as a child in the continuation
tree. A continuation reference number is
also shown to the left of a grandparent or parent box if that individual has
siblings reported in the continuation tree; and beneath a child box (bottom
row) if that individual has children reported in the continuation tree.
In cases of multiple
marriages, a continuation reference number preceded by "=" is shown
to the right of a parent box. This
number references the previous and/or next tree in which that individual is
shown with another partner.
In cases of adopted (or
fostered) children, the parental connection is shown with a dashed line and a
continuation reference number preceded by
"=" is shown within the individual's box. This number references the tree in which that
individual is shown with his or her natural parents.

In going through some
old items I have run across the fact that Lillie Crutchfield died giving
birth. That would indicate that Her and Dock Crutchfield daughter Ruth the sister of Bill,
Paul, and Willard was born around 10-19-1918.
The baby was given to Dock Crutchfield's sister to raise
and her last was Noah or Noe. In some data that is 25 years or so old there
is a reference to a Mary Crutchfield born around 1884 and who married a Toby Noe (Noah). It is
hard to read the 1900 Census but I do not think her name is included in Amos
Crutchfield's family but she could have been married and on her own by then if
she is the sister of Dock. I have been
running searches but have come up empty so far and wondered if you have run
across her name.
Still searching for
Ruth's married name but in a letter from a family friend sent to me in 1989
there is a mentioned that Ruth had passed away some time earlier.
I did find where I first
got the name Shanks. I have some
information that a Margaret Crutchfield had done research her husband's family
and she listed Lillie Shanks as Dock's first wife and Julie (Julia) Ayles as his second.
She has some information for an Amos Crutchfield but it looks different that what I can barely read in the 1900 census. Can you tell me what those names look like to
you. She is
showing Amos Crutchfield born in 1845 son of James and Jane. She does not mention his first wife but says
he married a second time in 9-27-1914 to a Sallie Minton and had two unnamed
children with her before dying 10-3-1927.
Since it appears she was
likely wrong about Shanks I am considering the following with much caution as
she could be getting her Amos Crutchfield's mixed up as I know I have run
across more than one. I am not sure where she got this information from but she
listed the children from Amos's first marriage as William (1874) who lived in
Cumberland Gap and was killed in a rock slide while working for the railroad, Albert (1878)who
lived in Knoxville and worked for for the railroad, Joe/Joseph
(1876), Arch (1877), Hanley 1880) and Mary (1884). I am giving fair consideration that some of
Amos' children likely moved out before the 1900 census and also still wonder if
Dock was a first name, a nickname or a middle name. Since Dock was not born until around 1886
when Amos would have been about forty it would likely he would have had a
number of children before then.
I saw that Julie (Julia)
was married to Dock in the 1920 census so that must have happened sometime in
1919 or before the census in 1920. After
Dock Crutchfield's death she married Milton Sharpe (Sharp). When she passed she left her home to Ruby
Gibson who had been another child she had raised.
Any thoughts you may
have from anything you have run across would be appreciated.
I just got a new
printer/scanner and will be sending you some pictures in the next few
weeks.
