d in July 191 7. Organizing Regent was Mrs. Nannie Lee Kin caid Stickley.
History of Ch apter Name: George Gibson, b orn in Cork County Ireland, 1732,
came to Ame rica with hi s parents, Robert and Isabella Gibson. They were among
th e ar my of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, who
emigrated to Ame rica before 1743. T hey settled in Augusta County, Virgini a,
where he married Elizabeth Smit h, daughter of Zacharia h Smith, about 1776.
They had eleven children. Ge orge di ed April 3, 1819,
Gibson Station, Virginia. Elizabeth die d Mar ch 2, 1826, same
place. They are buried near the sit e of the old Fort on a knoll at the
foot of Cumberland Mo ntain.
Young George served as lieutenant at the battle of Poin t Pleasant, und er
Captain George Mathews, in the Southern Division of Lord Dunmore's arm y. He
was commissione d a Captain, Feb 2, 1776 at Williamsburg, Virgini a, a Majo r
on March 22, 1777. He served with distinction in Scott' s
Briga de the terrible winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge.
Migrating to Washington County after the Revolution, the n settled in L ee
County about 1800. He purchased land a t .25 an acre and built Gibson F ort
near Cumberland Gap , a pass in the mountains used by
all going wes t. Today , this is Gibson Station, where
some of the descendants l i ve in a remodeled part of the Fort.
Mrs. Frank Kincaid (Elizabeth Ball) and her daughter, Mr s. Nannie Lee Kincaid
Stickley (Ross) of Ewing, Virginia became interested in honoring th eir
distinguised ancestor , Major George Gibson. They
decided to organiz ae a D.A.R . Chapter.
Other cousins became interested and in July 191 7 (af
ter the death of Mrs. Kincaid) twelve cousins met. T hey organized the Cha pter
and named it for their mutual an cestor, Major George
Gibson, with i ts location at Gibson S tation, Virginia, the most Southwestern
point in Vi rginia.

In W.B. 2, p. 366, Augusta Co., VA, is recorded the wil l of Robert Gibs on. An
abstract follows: 22 March 176 0 - To wife Isabella Gibson; son Ge orge Gibson;
son Jame s Gibson; son John Gibson (if alive); son Robert Gibs on, e xecutor,
wife Isabella Gibson, executrix. Wit: A. Thompso n, Wm. Joh nston, Zechariah
Smith. Proved, 20 May 1760.
In a manuscript volume in the Virginia State Library, referred to as "W ar
Four," which contains a list of the name s of the soldiers of the Virgin
ia State Line on Continenta l establishment who received certificates for t he
balanc e of their full pay, in accordance with the act of the Gene ral Assembly
of Virginia, passed at the November 1781 sess ion, on page 40, there of,
appears the name of George Gibso n. The entry shows that George Gibs on was a
Major of Infa ntry and that on 16 April 1785, there was paid to him a
certificate for L, 69.0.0. balance due him on account
of hi s servic es in the Revolutionary War.
George Gibson fought at Valley Forge during the terrible winter of 1777-78, of
the Revolution and at Point Pleasant during the Indian Wars wh
en the Indians were defeate d 10 October 1774. He held the rank of Maj or at
the end o f the war.
After the Revolution, Major Gibson moved westward to W ashington Co ., and when Lee was formed in 1792, his proper ty fell in
the new count y. He had three or four entries o f seven hundred acres of land
on Treasu ry Warrant No. 14,1 05. One of 200 acres on
Four Mile Creek, a branch of t h e Powell River, and one of 200 acres on Indian
Creek, anoth er branch of P owell River. Here he built a fort for the p
rotection of his family and ne ighbors; it is known as "Gib son's
Fort." It was in the western part of L ee County. I n later years, 1890,
when the Louisville and Nashville Rail w ay Company built their line through
Lee County, they name d this section Gi bson Station.
George Gibson served his community as well in peace a
s he did his cou ntry in time of war. He was selected by G ov. Lee as one of
the eight m en to sit on the first cour t of the county, and was one of the signe rs of the petitio n for the establishment of the town
of Jonesville for t h e county seat. His will in W.B. 1, p. 57, Lee Co., writte
n 3 October 181 8, filed 1819.

Tenn., where he h ad an iron foundry. Both of Ruth's parents, James and Charity
Ann (Huff) Renfro, were buried in Pineville, KY., in the garden of their home
on t h e banks of the Cumberland River. Some years later, their remains were
moved to the town cemetery, to the lot of John L. and Ida Moss Phillips. Ru th's father, James Renfro w as a Revolutionary soldier.
Robert and Ruth R. Gibson ha d nine (9) children, five of whom lived to
