Subject: Jacob Brown

If I understand it, Jacob Brown is your ancestor. Hope so, and hope you
can help me solve a problem in my Henderson family tree. My ancestor
James Henderson died in 1793 and left a wil favoring John A Brown, son
of Jacob Brown and Nancy Henderson. Nancy was indentured to Jacob 9 Oct
1781 when Jacob was living separate from his wife. It seems that John A
Brown was their child. Jacob left his son some property, to be received
only when Nancy died, but Ruth Gordon Brown took it to court and got the
property by right of dowry.
I am attempting to clarify this whole thing, cause it looks like my
James was Nancy's father. James will referred to the boy as "my beloved
son John A Brown". Would like to know what you know. John D.

 THIRD GENERATION

(5) Benjamin3 BROWN, (Jacob2 BROWN, Gabriel1) was born about 1780 at TN, and married (10) Nancy SEVIER, daughter of John SEVIER and Catherine "Bonny Kate" SHERRILL, who was born in 1780 at Limestone Creek, Washington Co., TN. Nancy died on Nov 6, 1825 at Roane Co., TN. Nancy was married to Walter KING.

Well, I apologize for the error above. After further correspondence with a true Brown researcher I have found that the notes for Benjamin Brown and the assumption that there was a Berryman Brown who married Sarah Hawkins Sevier was wrong. It seems that Nancy Sevier was married to Walter KING but not to Benjamin Brown.

Notes for Benjamin BROWN:

In the history of Washington Co. (which appears to be the statement from where I derived that Benjamin was married to Nancy SEVIER) it says" When Judge David Campbell executed a warrant for the arrest of John Sevier for high treason, on October 10th, 1788 Col. John Tipton and some of his militia officers started searching for Sevier who was at the home of Ruth Brown, widow of Sevier's good friend Jacob Brown, and mother of Benjamin Brown who married Sevier's daughter Nancy. When Mrs. Brown saw Tipton coming, she took her loaded gun and refused them entry to the House. Sevier saw Robert Love outside and surrendered to him, which made Tipton so angry that he swore to hang Sevier. The rescue can be further read about by clicking on this link Many accounts swear that Sevier was released without incident. HERE IS one such account.

The information above has been refuted by much research. I will leave Berryman here only to allow those of us who may have recorded out of date publications on the history of our East Tennessee forefathers. Please visit these lineage webpages posted by Nora and Wilson Leauge:

It's me again Joe:
Other Brown researchers and I have looked at the original records of the children's names,
and we think someone had taken the name Benjamin and incorrectly made it out to be Berryman.
The writing does say Benjamin. There was no Berryman Brown that we can find.

The information in that story is incorrect also. Benjamin married Sarah Hawkins
and Nancy married Walter King.
