I found the following information
on a Meridith Hurt from the
Washington Co. - Wythe Co. area that could possibly be this Meridith.

The Hurts have been in Virginia since 1623. However, I am stuck here
with Zachariah - This File comes from Sally Hurt
From Revolutionary War Pension Files.
Hurt, Zachariah, wife Francis, R5434, Va line, sol m Frances "Fanny"
Mitchell on 8 June 1787 in Prince Edward Co Va From DAR submission 118120 Zachariah served as private in
Capt.
Robert Hughes company under General Lawson Virginia militia. He was
born in Powhatan County and died in Wythe Co VA |
From the above we find that Zachariah Hurt had a brother named Meridith and one named George Washington, but as I read it no son by that name mentioned.
There is an entry in Lee
Count Marriage Register 2 transcribed by Elizabeth Carpenter
7-23-1858
M C Hurt age 46 widow b Wythe County Va parents S & H Hurt
Helen M Cole age 37 single b Lee Co Va paents John & Lucy Kirk
This might indicate that Meridith Hurt born near 1811 could be the son of Stephen Hurt, a son of Zachariah.
| In the 1810 U.S. Federal Census for Wythe Co., Va we find:
Page 836. Zachariah Hurt 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-1,5 one
male 10-25 and one male 45
and over. One female under 10 one female 10-15, one female 15-25 and
one
female 45 and over.

(3)Aunt Mariah Hurt married Benjamin Newby and after her husband's death lived in a small house at the corner of T.W. Stone's property, just under a large oak, that later became my parents front yard. She was said to have hidden a large amount of Confederate money in a knot in that tree during one of the battles that took place in Tazewell. The tree fell in Aug. 1980 and the first thing I did was look for all that money. Needless to say none was found. Well if the song, They Called the Wind Mariah ever had significance it was when that tree toppoled. I got over 50 loads of firewood just from the limbs and it left a 5 ton log laying in the yard of almost two years.
Harriet Lenora Hurt was the second wife of Thomas Wesley Stone
They were said to have adopted
Birdie May Stone.
