 FIRST GENERATION

(1) John¹ Langham wasborn in 1710 at Ann Arundel Co., Maryland, and married (2) Comfort Brown,daughter of Robert Brown and Katherine Chency, who was born 3 Jul 1710at Ann Arundel Co., Maryland. John died in 1765 at Lincoln Co., NC.

Subj: John & Abel Lanham history Date: 2/9/01 7:49:31 PM Eastern Standard Time From: eoakes@blueridge.net (Elaine Oakes) To: JPayne5744@aol.com I ran across information on John Lanham (d. abt. 1769 -- I think this is aslight correction, the will was written in 1765). The probate of the willwas in Tryon Co, North Carolina, right after it was split from Mecklenburg(on a page I copied because I was interested in somebody else. I amworking with Edward Jordan Lanham to try to connect the Spartanburg groupand this information got me looking for son William). I looked up the landgrants, and John originally had land on Dutchman's Creek in Lincoln Co. (Ithink in was Anson Co when he got the grant) but he and some others (atleast the Kuykendalls,Rootsweb database of Kuykendalls) moved to Fishing Creek, which is now in York Co, SC. I also found Kuykendalls, along with evidence of both Abel and Williamowning land on Puzzle Creek of the 2nd Broad River, which is in RutherfordCo, NC, just east of Forest City. As you know, Abel enlisted in theRevolutionary War in Rutherford Co, then later served in SC and TN. If youhaven't already seen the information, Abel Langham was accused of treason(meaning being a Tory), convicted in absentia, and his land was seized. Thelady at the geneology society said that it happened to one of her ancestors,too, and he went to court later to recover his property. There was a largegroup accused in 1782, apparently in several cases it was because somebodywanted their land. I guess Abel wasn't planning to go back anyway so neverchallenged the case. William had a lawsuit in Tryon Co in 1769 (over a horse, if I read theabstract correctly). He bought land on Puzzle Creek in 1780 but I haven'tfound any record of him after that. I don't suppose you have anyinformation that would help. I live in Rutherford Co so have been able to find these records locally. Elaine Oakes

(7) Comfort² Langham, (John¹) was born about1745 at York Co., SC, and married (9) Stephen Osburn who was bornabout 1745 at York Co., S.C.

(8) August Able² Lanham,(John¹ Langham) was born in 1762 at York Co., SC, and on 3 Dec1777, married (10) Jean. August Able died about 1838 at ClaiborneCo., Tn. Jean died in 1810 at York Co., SC.

Abel Lanham applied for revolutionary pension while livingin Claiborne Co., Tn, Feb 6, 1837. He was then 75 years old, thereforeborn 1762. He says he would not apply for pension while affluent but isnow forced to do so as he has lost his property. He enlisted March 1, 1778in Rutherford, Co., NC. He moved during the War, Feb 1, 1782, to WashingtonCo., NC, now Tennessee and enlisted again under Col. John Sevier and Capt.Samuel Williams in the Indian Campaign of that year. "We were marchedagainst the Cherokee Nation of Indians. We started from Big Island onthe French Broad River and marched on the Tennessee River and crossed thesame at an Indian town called Echota. From there we went to Hiwassee River,passed Bullstown and crossed Coosee River to an Indian town, called Estanolee;from there we went to Little Shoemaker Plains and from there to HiwasseeTown. In this campaign we destroyed the Indian crops and fourteen townsand returned home, Dec. 1, 1782." The widow, Sarah Lanham, appliedfor widow's pension while a residend of Laurel County, Ky., March 17, 1853,age 66 years, therefore born 1787. She says that she was married to AbelLanham abt 1814.

!Claiborne Co. Historical Society "Reflections",Winter 1992 pg. 9. Three Lanham brothers came to America (Maryland) fromIreland. There is no proof to the legend, however, but we do know thatJohn Lanham, was born about 1710 in the state of Maryland. We first findJohn Lanham in Old Lincoln Co., NC. in Capt. Samuel Corbins Co. of militia.John Lanham's will dated Oct 22, 1765 in Lincoln and Tyron Co. Wills, 1769-1824.Able Lanham enlisted as a soldier in the Revolutionary War in March 1778and served from Rutherford Co. NC as a private. Records show that he volunteeredand was discharged in May of 1778. He reenlisted in March of 1779 in samecounty and was discharged there on June 1, 1779. After this he went fora visit to SC to see his sister and volunteered there on Sept. 1, 1781in Orangeburg Dist. and was discharged Feb 1, 1782. After this he volunteeredagain in Washington Co., NC (Tenn) on Sept. 1, 1782 and was dischargedDec 1, 1782. The names are from August Able Lanham's old family Bible.The Will of Abel Lanham can be found on record in the courthouse at OldTazewell, Tn, Claiborne Co., Will book A, pg. 34 To wife Sarah and children(describes these as his last children)

(Greene Co. was at that time what later became ClaiborneCo., Tn as realized by the fact that he was granted land on Russell Creek,Cedar Branch on the Powell River.)

Greene Co. Tenn : Abel Lanham Land Grant No. 1774, 200acres in Green Co., Tn on Bent Creek, Waters of Nolachucka. Abel held landgrant in Claiborne, 100 acres, No. 2331, dated May 25, 1784, near WallensRidge. Also in Grainger Co., 1799 Tax List, Abel Langhan, 1 F.P. 650 acres,and 1,000 acres. He sells land in Claiborne Co, 1820 to sons William andJoseph..

In a grant of land to William Cocke, one of the foundersof Hawkins Co. dated Aug 5, 1789 filed Sept. 20, 1787 in Kingston. GreeneCounty on the waters of Clinch River in the valley betwixt Clinch Mountainand the Copper Ridge, Begining at a walnut and ...... to a sugar tree onAbrahm Langham's line thense south.

Another deed on Aug. 11, 1789 recorded in Fairfield. GreeneCounty on the Cedar Branch of Russell Creek the waters of Powell's River,Begining at ppapa noth to oak & hickory on Abrahm Lanham's line thesouth... along said Lanham's line.

Again on Aug 11, 1789 Greene County on Russel's Creekthe waters of Powell's River Beginning to Lanham's line.

In the 1900 Claiborne Co. Census there is a William Willis, born July 1837age 62 married 30 years to Mary, born Kentucky June 1851 Whose parents were all born in Tennessee and he worked the coal mines. His siter Mary Burns is living with them she is 74 who lists her parents being born inVa.
