(1) Salathiel1 Martin was born 23 Aug 1763 at Wales, and in 1782 at Surry Co., NC, married (2) Mary Cook who was born in 1763 at Va. Salathiel died in 1828 at Claiborne Co., Tn. Mary died in 1858 at Claiborne Co., Tn.

I am still actively searching for some of the families of the children. I have information on Sarah who md James Spencer (my line on down to present. Have David Martins line into Texas,Tennessees line. Betsas marriage -probably no children, Am looking for the families of william Cook Martin. Alfred W. Martin and Joseph Williams Martin. Keziah was dead by 1740 but was supposed to have md a Rev. Engles Vianna md as 2nd wife to John McMickkle and had one known son Obadiah McMickle who was living with his grandmother in Rusk co Texas in 1850My Lt Obadiah and his family probably received land in Tenn for his service. Both he and Salatheil were in Claiborne co Tenn. Obadiahs daughter Tennessee was born there. However he and his family went back to Surry co NC Salatheil and his family stayed in Claiborne co. Fran
Salatheil and Obadiah were neither born in Wales. They were born on "New South Wales Plantation which was either what they called the land that their father David Martin who md Mary Mann received in Amherst co Va. from his father Captain James Martin who deeded plantations to all his sons in 1759 The land in question was part of a large tract purchased by James on both sides of the Rockfish River in what was Albemarle and later became Amherst Fran The alternative location would be in Augusta Co. Be it remembered that on this the 27th day of January 1849 before me S.S. Shipley an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid personally appeared Joseph Collins a citizen of said county aged seventy five years. Sworn according saith that when he was a small boy (6? Yr) in 1780 Cap. Salathiel Martin came to New River and captured a party of tories who were encamped in a Rock House on said River and carried them off. That two of said company of tories escaped the night after their capture. One of them was by the name of David Gibson the other was named Lewis Collins, that the affiant was intimately acquainted with Gibson and Collins both for many years after this happened and has often heard them tell about how they made their Escape from Captain Martin and his men. In fact he can well remember that the name of Captain Salathiel Martin was great terror to the tories in them times. He further swears that the said Salathiel Martin was a remarkable tall man near seven feet tall. his Sworn to and subscribed the day Joseph X Collins And year last above mentioned before me mark S.S. State of Indiana Jefferson County
On this the 7th day of April 1851 personally appeared before me Samuel Taylor an acting Justice of the Peace in & for the County & state afsd George W. Martin who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following statements. To wit:
That he was sixty two years old the 11th day of last February. That he is the child of Salathiel and Mary Martin. That he is his Fathers & Mothers third child[.?] David Martin was his fathers and mothers oldest child and if living would be sixty eight years old[.?] That his Brother Thomas [of Estitt?] County Kentucky is four older than himself. That his afsd father as he vividly believes, served several years in the Army of the Revolution. He was a Captain under the command of Col Cleveland in North Carolina Militia Dragoons that his afsd Father died in Claiborne County, Tennessee on the __ day of _____ 18__. That he believes his afsd father & mother are entitled to a pension from the United States for his afsd Fathers service in the Army of the Revolution. He does by virtue of their [?] constitute and appoint Isaac [H?] [?] of Kentucky as their Attorney, to attend to and prosecute their afsd claims Before the Department at Washington City or any others or any other place. He also authorizes him to Administer on the Estate of his afsd Father in any Court or holding in [on?] for the District of Columbia or any one of the United States. That he does verily believe that his afsd Mother and father were married about the year of seventeen hundred and eighty two. That his afsd Mother is now living in Claiborne County Tennessee.

On this 8th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven, personally appeared before me, a justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, Mary Martin aged ninety three years, a resident of Claiborne County, in the state of Tennessee, who, being duly sworn according to law, declared that she is the widow of Salathiel Martin, deceased, who was a Captain of Calvary, commanded by Colonel Williams in the Revolutionary War, that her said husband volunteered in Surry County, North Carolina, on about ______ (the time not remembered) and continued in actual service in said war for the term of two years and six months, as She believes , and was honorably discharged at ______, on the ______ day of _______A.D. (time and place not remembered), She further states that She was married to the said Salathiel Martin in Surry County, North Carolina, on or about the year 1781 (the precise time not remembered) by one William Cook, a Justice of the Peace, and that her said husband died in Claiborne County, Tennessee, about the year 1826 and that she is now a widow. She further states that She cannot now produce a copy of the public Record of said marriage, and that the private Record kept of said marriage has now been lost or mislaid so that She cannot now provide the same. She further states that She had been placed on the Revolutionary War Pension List of the United States, and now has in her possession a certificate of a Pension, which is in the words and figures to wit:
"Duplicate. Department of the Interior. Widow's Pension. I certify that in conformity with the act of February 2d, 1848, Mary Martin, widow of Salathiel Martin,, who was a Captain of Calvary, in the Revolutionary War, is inscribed on the pension list at the rate of six hundred dollars per annum, commencing on the 4th of March, 1848, and continuing for life, unless she should again marry; in which case the Pension is not payable after the time of such marriage deducting former payments at the rate of $480. Per Annum, ["?] "Given at the Department of the Interior this twenty sixth day of December on thousand eight hundred and fifty four. Issued in lieu of a certificate dated July 10th 1852" Examined and countersigned K[H?]. McClellan L. P. Waldo Secretary of the Interior Commissioner of Pensions" (Endorsed.) "Payment to be made at Knoxville by Isaac Lewis Esq. Agent for paying Pensioners in the Agency of Tennessee. Payable on the 4th September and 4th March. Recorded in the Pension Office on the Roll of Pensioners under act February 2d 1848, Page 296 Vol. 3.
" She further [refers?] to the proof taken and on file in the Pension Office at Washington, under which She was placed on the Pension Roll, to show the service of her said husband and her marriage with him &c. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining a bounty land warrant under the 8th section of the Act of Congress approved March 3, 1855. Attest her F. M. Fulkerson Mary X Martin George M. The above Declaration was sworn and subscribed before me on the 8th day of April, 1857. And I certify that the attesting witnesses whose signatures appear above are credible, and are residents of Claiborne County, Tennessee. Feb. 1845, Claiborne Co. Tn, aged 81 yrs. of said county. She
maried Salathiel 23 Apr. 1782 by William Cook, Esq.in Surrey
County N. C. Her husband marched from Surrey Court House
during the Revolution.and died 6 May 1827. Mary Martin ,
aged 93 applied for Bounty land Warrant in 1857, same county
and said she was Mary Cook before her marriage. George W.
Martin came fourth 7, April 1851, Jefferson County Indiana.
was 62 years old. 11 Feb. last and was the third chid of
Salathiel Martin. David Martin was the oldest child, and if
living would have been 68 years old. His brother Thomas
Martin , of Estill County Ky. was 4 years older than George
W. Martin. David Lawson, born 1765 Amherst County Va. said
he served with Salthiel and had known him since infancy.

Lieutenant Obadiah Martin, of Application made in May, 1840
His widow, Winnefred Cook of Surrey, N.C., aged 80 years, March
25, 1841, was married to him Sept. 26, 1785, by Salathial
Martin, esq., Justice of the Peace, in Surrey County. They
have had ten children, viz:
Polly, Married Barrett Martin, Sarah, married James
Spencer, Keziah, dead, David, Alfred, and William C, dead,
Vienna, married John Mc Neil, Joseph W, Elizabeth, and
Tennessee, married Jesse Cochran. Both Obadiah and his wife
were raised in the same neighborhood. He was out on several
tours, he was at the battle of King"s Mountain, and other
places. Elisha Ayers testifies that Martin enlisted about
1779 , with him, and that he acted as lieutenant. They
marched under Capt. Lewis, and Salathiel Martin, to King's
Mountain, under Col. Cleveland. Capt. Salathiel Martin was a
brother of Lieut. Obadiah Martin, and both were very tall men, so much so as to attract attention.

(13) John Woodson3 Shumate, (Nancy2 Martin, Salathiel1) was born in 1825 at Claiborne Co., Tn, and on 15 May 1846 at Claiborne Co., Tn, married (14) Barilla Billingsley, daughter of William P. Billingsley and Nancy McCreary, who was born in 1829 at Tn. John Woodson died after 1880 at Tx. Barilla died before 1880 at Charleston, Coles Co., IL.
