Martha Alice Slaton, the last child of Captain John Slatton and Mary (Polly) Edwards was born on the 1st day of April 1817 near Big War Creek next to North Clinch Mountain in Hawkins County, Tennessee. She married Rial Johns 17 June 1836. He was born 12 December 1812 and died 11 Aug 1898. She died 21 Dec 1887.

Captain John Slatton was born 1771 near Dan River, Surry County, North Carolina. He moved with his father to 96th District which later became Greenville District, South Carolina.   John is seen in 1790s with several deed transactions then moves with his brother Edmund and sister Martha and Nancy to Hawkins, Tennessee.

28th of December 1798, Greenville District Deed Book E (1798-1800), page 450 from George Brandon to John Slaton Jr.
14th of June 1800, Greenville District Deed Book E (1798-1800), page 445, James Askew to John Slaton Jr. All deeds along Fall Creek middle fork of the Saluda River. Mr Alton Greene states he has seen land transactions as early as June 1809 in Hawkins County, Tennessee which would be just right time period.
John served in the War of 1812.   Mustered in Bunch's Mtd Militia; also in Booths Militia 02 Mtd.
Nominated Captain 21 Dec 1813 in 4th TN Reg't and also served with Colonel Stamfer.      Pension # WC 34322, widow shows Martha A (family records states it was Mary Edwards not Martha Edwards)?
He is involved in numberous court orders between a Thomas Johnston, ranging from the date of Friday, 7th October 1814 to Tuesday 8th of April 1817 in Hawkins Court Order Books.
On 25th of Feb 1818, Hawkins County, Tennessee Deed Book 9 (1818-1819), page 76, Thomas Johnston to John Slatten (land along Big War Creek) and 19th May 1818, Hawkins County, Tennessee Deed Book 11 (1823-1831), page 131 John Bryant to John Slatten also along Big War Creek.
NOTE: on Tuesday, 6th of April 1819, Hawkins County Curcuit Court Minutes (1810-1821), page 344, John Slattin VS Eli Overton "This day came the defendant by his attorney and suggests the death of the plaintiff and by the consent of the plaintiffs council. It is ordered this suit be abated. This day came the defendant by his attorney and suggests the death of the plaintiff by consent of defendants council, it is ordered by the court that this suit be revived in the name of MARY SLATTEN, administratrix of John Slatten, deceased. So, as you can see two documents show different spouses. I suggested two different marriages to descendants but they state that Mary (Polly) Edwards is the mother of all the children.

John Slatton Sr born 5th day of June 1739, Saint Paul's Parish, Hanover County, Virginia and died before 27th day of January 1814 in Greenville District, South Carolina.    He married an Anne. First seen in deed 23rd of July 1762 Albemarle County, VA John Slatten and Abraham Slatten owing along with many others David Lewis current money of Virginia.
13th of November 1766, Albemarle County, VA Deed Book (1764-1768), pages 316-317 John Sladen is a witness to his father's deed of trust. William Sladen sells to his brother-in-law John Rodes a Slave Pegg and the sum of fifty pounds given to john Rodes in exchange that John Rodes will provide for William Sladen's welfare until his death, which one can tell from deed is an old man.

On 9th of November 1791 John Slaten seen in Greenville District Deed Book C (1791-1795), page 106-108, Nicholas Darnall sells to JohN Slaten land on Saluda River--Armstrong Creek.
9th of Febraury 1796 Greenville Deed Book D (1795-1798) pages 280-281 John Slatton to John Lathram shows as John Slatton Senr and his wife Anne.
On 9th of April 1796 Greenville District Deed Book D (1795-1798), pages 289-190, Bartholomew Wood to John SLaten Senr and John Slaten Jr witnessed.
On 24th of November 1824, Greenville District SC, page 73, settlement of John Slaten Sr land...Know all men by these present we Nancy Slatten, Aaron Slatten, Martha Slatten, Enoch Slatten, and Joseph Slatten (note that the oldest children had already moved to Hawkins County, TN and were not included in the deed) to Isaac Ford which was sold to John Slayton by William Moultrey, his excellency on 20 Feb 1787 and 5th of Jan 1801. Recorded 27th of November 1824.

William Sladding (Slatton) was born feb 1701 St Peter Parish, New Kent, VA and died 14 oct 1788 Albemarle, VA. He married Mary Rodes.
She was born 3 feb 1703, St Peter's Parish, New Kent, VA and died 5 jun 1765 Albemarle, VA.
From Accounts of Thomas Partridge Store and Company in Hanover County, Virginia we see on 1st of March 1737, page 272 Wm Slading. on 10th of October 1737, page 251, William Sladding. On 22 June 1738, page 32 WM Sladding. On 12th of July 1738 William Sladding and on 5th of June 1739 William Sladden.
Unfortunately, scant shreads of records are left of Hanover County, but the store accounts at least prove that he was there and provides living utinsels they purchased or traded. See above for deed of giving slave and fifty shillings to JohN Rodes for his upkeep.
In 1787 Albemarle personal property tax list shows John Rodes Sr with William Slatin listed under him as John Rodes with 2 white tithes, 12 blacks, 18 horses, 10 cattle, and tax of 74 pence.

John Sladden was the immigrant who was transported on the 25th of October 1695 seen in Virginia Land Patent Book 9 (1695-1706), page 19 by John Hinton and Ralph Wormeley, secretary of Virginia lying in King and Queen County, Virginia.     Was probably indentured for seven years to Ralph Wormeley and then moved to Hanover County, Virginia as seen on 17th of March 1711-12 in the Vestry Book of St Paul's Parish Book, page 181, in land procession records, precinct 28.    Seen again on 3rd of April 1716, page 189 and again on the 10th of Feb 1719.
There is a Creek named Slayden Creek which empties into the Machumps Creek and is between the present court house and Ashland. No doubt married in Virginia since no spouse transported but unknown to this author.    Died in Hanover Virginia and had three known sons William Sladden, Arthur Sladden, and Abraham Sladden. John Sladden came from England, either Kent or Yorkshire/lancanshire region. One other possible is East Willow in Hampshire, England.

Mary Rodes is the daughter of Charles Rodes who was born 24 March 1661 Struton, Cum Fenton, Nottingham, England. He is the son of John Rodes and Elizabeth Jason. JohN Rodes is the son of Sir Francis Rodes and Elizabeth Lascelles. Francis Rodes son of John Rodes and Frances Constable (This line takes one into royalty way back). John Rodes son of Francis Rodes and Elizabeth Sandford. Francis Rodes son of John Rodes and Attelina Hewet.
