Thank you
Joe for the conversation today and your interest in helping me find answers.
I will tell
you as I think of what I know, little things that may help, others that may be
overused.
Sarah's
parents were John Staniford (this was the spelling in 1880) and Mary
Leonard Staniford. The folling children of this union:
Elisabeth
1872 Martha J. 1874
Margret 1876 Pearly
1878 Robert 1880
Sarah 1881 Minnie F. 1888
Samuel M. 1891
Seems John
lived all his life in Claiborne Co. (Tazewell).
I have no
idea of where John and Mary/Mollie (have found this in some census) are
buried... I am assuming Claiborne.
Sarah was
found with Carrick Cloud and his mother Mahulda in 1900 in Claiborne, listing
her as a servant.
She was
19. I am assuming perhaps Sarah was preg. with Flora at the time.
From what I
gathered in my visit to Tazewell, the Cloud family was of some
prominence. I wondered at the time if perhaps Carrick could be the
father of Flora, but that was shot down quickly by those I asked. Seems
Carrick was of a pillar within the community and that even though he was a
bachelor, this idea was laid to rest quickly. I do not know how
long Sarah stayed there. I do know that by 1910, Flora is listed as
a 9 year old granddaughter at John and Mary's home. Seems Sarah
left Flora to be raised by John and Mary. Of course, in 1910 Sarah
is across the state line in Middlesboro at age 19 at the Cumberland Hotel.
In 1920,
Flora is still with her grandparents, along with my daddy, Ralph Stanifer, age
1 1/2 yrs.
Seems these
women just used men and threw them to the wayside. Or it
could have been vise versa.
In the 1920
Claiborne Co. Census, there are three families living with John and Mary.
John 72
Mary/Mollie 65
Lidle
(Lyle) Collins 31
Minnie
Collins 31
Horace (it
is mispelled on the census, as Honore) Collins 5
Edna Mae
Collins 1 2/12
Infant
Collins
Flona
(Flora)Standifer 18
Ralph
Standifer 1 2/12
In 1930
Claiborne Co. census, Ralph is listed with his great aunt... Minnie Collins
Lyda (again
this is Lyde) Collins 42
Minnie
Collins 41
Horace
Collins 13
William
Collins 10---- this was the infant in 1920
Pauline
Collins 8
John L.
Collins 4
Ben Henry
Collins 2
Carl
Collins 3/12
Ralph
Stanifer (listed as nephew) 11
Joe, how
many Collins are still in Tazewell? Someone kin to Minnie and Lyde has to
have some idea of Flora and Sarah. Or I wonder if things were just
not discussed, and families just took things as what was offered?
I do
know that Horace is buried in Irish Cem. I do not not of any
of his siblings. As I said, nothing was ever discussed, nor did I
quesiton until way to late in life to get answers. I do know that as a
child, when I did ask quesitons, I was shot down quickly by daddy in any
answers.
From what I
also understood back as a child, Collins were considered Mulengon.
I do know
Horace never married. I do recall Flora living with him up until
her death in 1973. At other times I recall being told she lived in
Morristown with Sue Wilmot(h), who was Flora's widow's daughter.
I do not
know when Flora married Buryl, from Middlesboro KY, but I am assuming early
1950's. He was killed in a truck accident.
I do know
that Flora went from MIddlesboro to Claiborne even when married and after
living in two different areas.
Flora
Wilmot(h) died Nov 1973. If I am not mistaken she was handled by Coffey
Funeral Home.
Billy Mack Ferguson Greer was born July 1939 and died by drowning at Blue Hole June 10 1964. It seems that Billy Mack Ferguson Greer died while swimming late one evening at or near Cedar Grove Boat Dock. Pete Harness worked there in 1964. Billy Mack Ferguson Greer was swimming with Charlie Shell and two other people. Other events in 1964 - Charlie Shell was shot three times in the stomach and the New Tazewell Banner Warehouse and First Baptist Church Burned. Billy Mack Ferguson Greer was the same Billy Mack Ferguson Greer that was stabed in the stomach at Ed Runions store in the early 1960's, reportedly by Jimmy Campbell of New Tazewell.

I have pictures of him, given to me by Margie Dale Greer and the image in the pictures are exact replicas of my daddy, only with the red hair. Margie's late husband was Clyde Greer. Seems he is the brother of Houston Greer, who took in Billy Mack. (Houston Greer was the father of Clyde Greer) Houston and his wife Hattie Ferguson Greer, sister of Lucy Ann Ferguson July 12 1910-Sept. 16 1943 . Lucy Ann is the mother of Billy Mack. It was not stated a proper adoption was done on Billy Mack. The story is that when William Mack Ferguson and Lucy Hicks Ferguson, parents of Lucy Ann died, she had another mental breakdown. It seems Billy was cared by his grandparents, due to the mentality of Lucy Ann. Daddy never ackowleged Billy Mack.
What hurt
me the most of knowing the date of Billy Mack's birth... just six months after
my parents married. Hww hard it had to have been for my momma to
know of what daddy had done while they were dating.
She
was sent to a mental hospital, and died there in 1943. Billy
Mack was about to be "adopted out" and this is where
Houston Greer went to bat for Billy Mack. From what was told, he
worshiped the ground Billy walked on. Hattie could not continue
after the death of Billy, and she grieved herself to death in Dec of
1943. Houston died in 1971.
Strange
that since red hair is a recessive trait, of how strong this hair has gone into
my family. I am the first redhead of my parents, my sister's son had red
hair, and now she has two grandsons with red hair. My twin sons did
not have red hair.
Daddy
worked on the Feruguson farm, and got ahold of the farmers daughter who was
older than he was, but seems she was mentally capped... with the mentality of
a 12 year old girl, and got her pregant. What I also learned
from Pat Greer, as well as Margie Dale is that it was "customary" for
boys to practice on mildly retarded girls before marrying good
girls. Also what was shocking is that the parents of these daughters
never pressed charges, etc. towards the boys if a pregnancy occured. God
how backward thinking Claiborne was at the time.
Flora and
Hugh Townsley fathered my daddy. Seems the story is that Flora got
Hugh drunk, had a roll in the hay and nine months later out came
daddy. I found out Hugh never acknowleged daddy, but
he did know who his father was. I do not thing daddy ever
acknowleged Hugh. Seems the Townsley family knew of Ralph, per the
visit I had with Eugene Townsley who lives in Claiborne near Caves
Springs. Seems most of Eugene's siblings as well as his
grandchildren and neices and nephews carried on with the red hair.
Eugene said
the family sort of expected to see daddy attend Hugh's funeral in 1969....
seems we Stanifers had no idea of this dark side of the family. We
were left in the dark on many things. Claiborne county residents
seem to relish in kekeping secrets.
Flora
married Patton (Pat) Essary, great uncle of the lady, Linda Essary who
contacted you earlier. First husband. Seems old Flora used
the same mode of operation in getting Pat. She got him drunk, the
next morning he woke up, found her in his bed and about had a heart
attack. Either he got an annulment, or a very quick divorce, for Linda
says her daddy, Roy Essary who was from Claiborne, within a month they
were divorced.
What kind of preacher or JOP would
marry a man visually drunk?
Hopefully
with the Standifers/Stanifers and Collins still in the area, along with
records there in Tazewell, Middlesboro KY, some information can be found
concerning Sarah, Flora and Billy Mack.
Thank you
Joe. If you come across more questions, ask away, and I will see
what I can answers.
Joe, I have
learned that digging into family will sometimes bring good as well as
surprising things to the surface. I learned
long ago that the Standifer women were loose, and it seems nothing fazes me
anymore concerning them. Perhaps it was the times, perhaps it was
the place, but morals are morals as well as I am concerned. Did
not know that morals had shelf lives, depending on the curumstances. Oh
well, I am just whistiling in the wind on that aren't I? I do hope
you find something new on Sarah while you are visting
MIddlesboro. Marriage/death.. something. Thank you
for finding more about Billy Mack. Now, when I was in Claiborne,
Margie Dale Greer told me that Billy Mack was with his girlfriend/fiance when
he drowned. The only single person listed on the article of his
drowing was a Mrs. Ollie Marshall. I wonder if she was a
widow/divorced woman. Or was he seeing a married
woman? OH how the plot thickens. Waiting
patiently to hear of some new findings. Thank you
for your help... your are truly an angel on two legs. |
