Descendants of Thomas GRAHAM
The Graham estate in Ireland was confiscated and they were condemned to death.
The Duke of Aberdine influenced the death sentence to
banishment. They came to Tennessee when Hughe was 14
years old where he married a lady of much beauty and accomplishments. Their
home in Tazewell, was famous as a center of culture and hospitality.

Hi, I have been searching for links in my g.grandmother's
mother's side of the family and I have come to a confusing break in my
research. I have an old copy of the lineage of the Graham family that connects
with mine. It is taken from a book written about Tennessee families
but I don't have the name of it now.
In it the following people are
listed:
Dosia Sharp m. Martin Luther Longmire Dosia's mother was Nancy"Nannie"White
Nancy's father was Lee White and her mother was Margaret McNullen
Margaret's parents were Jane Graham and John McNullen
Now here's where I have a problem....Jane Graham's
father is listed as Hugh Graham married to Katherine Ninny. Hugh's list of
children on your GEDCOM doesn't have a Jane Graham. Hugh's parents are listed
on your file and mine as Thomas and Jane MacBeth. The
discrepency is with Hugh's supposed daughter Jane who
married the McNullen. Can you help me sort this out?
I don't have any dates beyond Dosia Sharp who was my g.grandmother.
Any help would be appreciated.

My g-g-g grandfather was born Feb. 2, 1831 in Claiborne County, TN. His name
was Hughy Graham Yoakum. I'm researching his life,
and I came across your website with the Descendents
of Thomas Graham. It occurred to me that he was probably named for this man's
son, Hughe Graham. Do you know of any family
connections between the Hughe Graham's and the John
Yoakum's (son of Isaac Yoakum and Mary Davis), or was Hughe
a public figure? I also wonder if Hughe was
pronounced how the Yoakums spelled it - Hughy.
Other names of John Yoakum's kids that have last names I've seen in Tennesee history (maybe you know more about) are Newton
Henderson Y., Pryor Lee Y., Thomas Gaines Y. The girl's names are always pretty traditional.
Hughy's boys were John Henderson Y., Daniel Jackson
Y., Jeff Davis Y. (an obvious one), Lafayette Patten Y., and Henry Clay Y.
(another obvious one).
I'd love to know anything you know about Hughe Graham
or any of these other namesakes. And I would be happy to share my Yoakum
history with you when I get it all written down. Hughy
Graham Yoakum was quite an interesting man.

Notes for Peter Graham FULKERSON:
Peter Graham Fulkerson was a prominent lawyer and at one time was Attorney
General of Tennessee. He also is the author of Early Settlers of Claiborne Co.
that regularly appears in editions of Reflections, CCHS quarterly.
P.G. Fulkerson,s
family, after living about six years in Tazewell moved to Mulberry Gap, and
four years later they went to his farm in Lee County, Va,
but later returned to Tazewell. His father was a success a
a physician, and gave forty
years of his life to the practice of medicine. He was an old
line Whig, and he and his wife were worthy members of the Presbyterian
Church. P.G. Fulkerson was educated at the academy school of Tazewell and
finished at Danville, Mo. At about twenty-two years of age, in 1861, he entered
the Confederate State Army, from Missouri. He was first in col. Elliott's regiment,
then served one year in Gen. Sterling Price's Unit. He was captured at
Danville, within the lines of the Federal Commander, and who had issued orders totreat all as spies who were found on the north side of
the Missouri River. After a variety of trouble, and through the influence of
his uncle Richard C. Fulkerson, who was a Union citizen, he was released on a
bond of $10,000. He returned to Tazewell to find all his brothers away to
escape the political prejudice existing at the time. He went back to Missouri
and farmed for two years where he began reading law. He returned to Tennessee
and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He was a member of the constitutional
convention in 1870 and in 1873 he was appointed by Gov. John C. Brown, attorney
general.
Per an account attributed to him in 1926,
Peter was born at Mulberry Gap, northeast of Tazewell, TN, which at that time
was in Claiborne Co. and later became Hancock Co. Peter was educated at schools
in Tazewell (about 5 months per year) and Danville, MO. He was living in
Montgomery Co., MO in 1861 when he entered the Confederate Army. He served in
Col. Elliott's regiment and then in Gen. Sterling Price's corps, participating
in the battles of Big Blue and Lexington. He was captured at Danville, where
the Union Army had issued an order similar to the
"Kansas Jayhawker" rules that Southerners found in Union districts
were to be executed. His uncle Robert Craig Fulkerson of Danville, an
influential Union supporter, convinced the Army to release him and got them to
send him North on condition that he stay North during the War. So he went to Philadelphia, PA, where his uncle William
PATTERSON put him to work and gave him employment until the War ended.
Peter returned to Tazewell after the War and
then went back to Missouri, where he farmed for two years and began studying
law. He returned to Tennessee and was admitted to the bar in 1868. Peter was a
member of the Constitutional Convention in 1870 and in 1873 was appointed
Attorney General of the State of Tennessee. The Goodspeed's "History of
Claiborne County" (1886) reported he was living in the "fine stone
residence" built in 1814 by William GRAHAM, Tazewell's first merchant. He
was the author of Early Settlers of Claiborne Co. Peter had six children with
Emma GLENN and two children with Mary FUGATE.

and married (117) Cornella RUSSELL who was born about 1830 at Rogersville,
Hawkins Co., Tn. William Houston died at Jersyville,
Ill.
Notes for William Houston FULKERSON:
Once when asked to write an account of his early life Col. William H. Fulkerson
supplied the following:
I was born at Tazewell, East Tennessee, Sept.
9, 1834. I grew up healthy and strong as most country boys do. I worked in the
fields and clearked in my Uncle William Houston's
store. I went to school when there was any.
My first trip was from home to Nashville. My
uncle, Col. William Houston, for whom I clearked, was
a member of the Tennessee legislature. We went all the way in a carriage. There
was no railroad then. Uncle went on in the stage as he could not wait for us. So my anut, and Miss Mary Graham,
myself, our Negro coachman, and his siter (just tow women, a boy, and two slaves) constitutedour
party. We went through all those mountains unmolested.
We spent the winter in Nashville. Uncle
William took me out to "The Hermitage" to see General Andrew Jackson,
who I thought was the greatest man on earth. But when I saw him with his hair
standing up, I was scared. Then when he ran his hand through my hair and told
me to grow up and be a good man like my uncle, I felt at ease at once.
When I was in my teens
I was sent out collecting. The custom in those days was to credit a customer
for a year, and then if he didn't pay, to take his note. Some paid promptly and some had to be sent for. Sending for a
delinquent customer was called "putting a boy after him." We went to
all their houses and saw what they had. Then we would buy a horse or cow and
pay hom the difference, if any, in cash and return
his note. If we could not collect, we would sell his note at a discount to
anyone who would buy it.
In this way we got the farm stocked to all it
would hold. By time to "drive south" we would go to farmers and but
enough more to make a dorve. Some of the cattle came
out of the canebrakes and were very wild. They were driven to Virginia and
sold.
I bought hogs to drive to North and South
Carolina. We drove them five or six miles a day, then fed them all the corn
they would eat by morning. We drove them along the Nolichucky river, the road
frequently crossing the river which gave the hogs plenty ofwater.
After we passed Ashville and got into the mountains, we fed the hogs chesnuts at 2 shillings (33 1/3 cents) per bushel. Corn was
selling at "2 shillings thripence" (37 1/2
cents).
My next trip was with my uncle to
Philadelphia and Baltimore. We went by stage coach to Lynchburg, Va., thence to
Richmond by canal boat, and thence to Philadelphia by the Camden and Amboy
Railroad. It was my first ride on a train and came near being my last one. In
those days the ends of the rails were not bolted together as they are today, but lapped beveled ends over each other and were
spiked to the ties. When the end of a rail became loose it would sometimes run
over the wheel instead of under, up through the floor, the front seat, and out
at the top of the car. I had been sitting in the front seat and had just stepped
into the aisle when a "snake's head" as they were called came up
through the floor and seat I had been sitting in.
William Fulkerson, after working on his
father's farm, clerking in his uncle's store, and attending the local school,
Tazewell Academy, attended McMinn Academy. While there he received an
appointment ot the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point. His teacher in mathematics at West Point was robert
E. Lee, who was later to become the commanding geral
of the Southern Army during the Civil War.
After two years at West point
he resigned to go west and take part in putting down the Mormon Rebellion. The
"mormon War" was of short duration. William
Fulkersonloved the free life of the great outdoors
and excitement of the West which was new and wild at that time. He secured
employment with Russell, Majors, and Waddell, the famous freighting company at
that time, driving a six-mule team in a wagon train between St. Joe and San
Francisco.
